the funniest part about all this is how little it affects the younger generations. School districts may ban certain books, but the worst and most corruptible information that can be exposed to a kid is on the internet, social media, tv shows, and movies. I was reading a book on my lunch break at work, and I kid you not, 10 of my co-workers commented "wow, are you reading" or "you look so studious" or "why are you reading?"

I am not a parent but as an adult who was once a kid, I resent my parents for sheltering me too much. They dumbed me down by keeping stuff from me rather than taking the time to explain the hard facts of life and guiding me with forming my own opinion on things. @TheWyrmsfire Be specific and concise. I don't think we need legislation. It can be dealt with on a case by case basis. Teachers should be required to offer alternatives to a questionable book. Book bans are not something that should be undertaken lightly. If you had read the book I'm speaking of, you would understand my worry. These types of books were written after WW2 if that tells you anything. It is better to err on the side of caution.

@@oldtestament8052 This isn't true. Schools mostly rely on their state's property taxes, and then some state/fed funds. Schools that are in poorer areas subsequently get less of this money and therein lies the inequitable outcomes of the American education system. Corruption is no doubt prevalent in this country on multiple levels but with regards to the school system that is not necessarily the case. To go to your second point about kids speaking multiple languages in other countries, that also relates to under funding. You have to realize that a lot of the schools have to cut certain programs if they don't have the money. Language classes, art, and even honors classes go out the window. I went to a school so severely underfunded that by the time I reached the 10th grade all of the AP classes were cut and we had to share textbooks. Lastly, the 4 hours of school a day has nothing to do with the topic at hand. We have long school days because we keep to the archaic time system, while also constantly pushing for standardized testing that doesn't really help kids retain any information. Our system is extremely flawed. Our teachers are overworked, and paid low wages for the multiple hats they have to wear at their jobs. I've seen teachers not only educate, but play social worker, therapist, and mediator.

Not every book ban is the same. Some books should absolutely be banned IMO. Some of the books mentioned are classics and I don't understand why they would remain banned, if they still are. I saw a KZbin video that cited examples of why a specific math textbook was banned. Math problems were bringing up racial bias and racism. Is that really appropriate or necessary for a math book?? The legality of something has very little to do with its quality. For years a the average American actually believed that because cannabis was illegal it must be "bad". The claim against The Great Gatsby was "obscenity". It's important to separate value judgments from the legal status of anything. ...Anyway, it's not banned. They just listed it as a title Jerry Falwell led a charge against. I'm not clear on whether they were successful and what state(s) it pertained to, but well after that the book was required reading for me in high school.

I'm glad my school district not only didn't ban books but highly encouraged and sometimes required us to read books that would definitely be banned elsewhere in the States. Reading They Cage the Animals at Night, 1984, House on Mango Street, Things Fall Apart, and What is the What were some of the most uncomfortable but also impactful books I've read in my lifetime. And I read these books in middle school and high school.

Yes, we do have far-right, anti-feminism, racism, and other ills, but not strong and systematic as in the US. Lol when I was a teenager, I'd go above and beyond to read anything banned. I'd look up books that were banned in other countries, or that used to be banned (didn't cross my mind that books are still being banned in 2022). I even got a hold of Mein Kampf someway, which is the only book that was still banned in my country. I never finished it, because it's pretty gross, but I wanted it because I couldn't have it. I mean, if reading is a rebellious thing to do, that's one way to get teenagers reading, right?

I read a banned book three times: Some Boys, The Kite Runner, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Some Boys was about a girl who was r*ped in a school where no one believes her, The Kite Runner is about an Afghan boy living during the war in his country, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a book-loving introvert going through high school. All were very insightful and raw. I loved them.

I once had a mom yell at me personally for a book she felt was totally inappropriate for High school. She claimed it was radical and un-American and the author was "probably a liberal pervert" and how dare we ask her child to read it . The book this mother felt was completely un-American was Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I agreed that it was radical for its time as it encouraged the 13 colonies to leave British rule and influenced the Declaration of Independence. She said she would pray for my soul and walked away before I finished talking.

Learning about history should be uncomfortable but that helps us learn and become better people. Similarly, we should be able to have critical discussions in the classroom about current events - it helps kids think critically about the world and encourages discussion. When I was in high school, we always held discussions about current events. Once, we had a seminar where everyone talked about their views on the war and gay marriage. It was great. Shielding kids from that is terrible. And even more so when you realize the same people banning reality want everyone to carry AR-15s everywhere they go. Absurd.

When I was a kid, I recall very few other kids even caring about books at all. To prove it, each book had a nameless checkout card within to show that they didn't. So fast forward to today and I would be surprised if these banned books had one or two kids willing to pry themselves away from the computer to read one of them. I don't believe that we should ban any books but in the end, very few kids will be affected regardless of what we do.

I heard one old lady submitted a list of 45 books to be banned but it turns she had not read most of those books and she had no kids. She just wanted to be politically correct. Republicans have been crying about cancel culture but they have outdone the perpetrators of the cancel culture. Some on the left are also trying to change the wording classical books where they want the books to sound like they were written in 2020s by replacing words like “fat person” with “heavy person” which is equally outrageous. Books are books, they represent diversity in opinions which is key to human progress and civilization. If you find something offensive in a book, you have every right stop reading it. Instead of listening to these parents who are calling for a ban on these books we should be solely listening to the teachers and the students to get their view on what should be banned. The problems that generation will face when they leave school will never be solved if they don't learn about them in school and have those discussions of race and sexuality in a productive and appropriate manner. The parents are having way too much influence over how and what the children are taught and that should have no place in the classroom. I’m so glad my school isn’t really a part of this strict ban. I remember my history teachers were quite progressive and open minded. My most recent history teacher was very outspoken and was determined to teach ALL of her students about racism, sexism, gender equality, etc, along with the school’s curriculum. She always found a way to make sure she touched on every subject attaining to the subjects learned in class-how colonization hurt the POCs already living there, how women in the past and even today were more likely to not be seen as valuable compared to their male counterparts, how POCs are often looked over in numerous heroic stories of our white counterparts. Seeing this type of ban really saddens me, as a women of color and as someone who identifies with the LGBTQ+ community. Most of the time we’re just blinding our students from very valuable information.

The number is 19% for books banned regarding sexual bans, which is actually smaller than that given how book banning groups classify a "pornographic" book (babies everywhere book and instances of books in which individuals are sexually assaulted which aren't pornographic by any means.) I think most people against book banning wouldn't have a problem with banning books from school libraries if they were banned for being pornographic or just overtly sexual, but the other, more larger instances of books being banned are being banned because they disagree with the values presented, which even at regulated level of schools, shouldn't be enough reason for an outright ban

Ya know I don’t even understand the “I don’t want my kids to learn about sex in middle school” type argument. In my district there was a whole science/health unit about sex, diseases that can be passed through having sex, consent, safe sex, and protocols you can take of ever you were to get pregnant. I just don’t understand why parents get so fed up about certain topics in schools. Like, if your kid is in public school, they are gonna know all the sweaf words and all the porn/sexual phrases even if the books are banned. That’s just common sense. What parents can do is interact with their kids learning, make them understand the parent’s beliefs, without enforcing their opinion on the masses. I think that statistic, that more than 80% of Americans don’t think books should be banned, is very accurate for the average Americans. Even if I think something inappropriate in a book, I wouldn’t want it banned. I simply would want to explain to my kid that I feel that portion of the book is wrong and that they shouldn’t replicate that. I think that is an easy solution to this problem.
