Shouting, heated exchanges break out over LGBTQ+ books in Dearborn schools

At a Dearborn School Board meeting Thursday, hundreds of people filled the Stout Middle School auditorium. There was shouting, booing, and more as people shared their thoughts about certain books in school libraries after a parent reported them as being sexually explicit and inappropriate for children.

The more you can think critically and objectively about a decision before you make it, the more likely the decision will be the best for you. I believe political and cultural values should not be taught or pushed onto students in school. School should teach you How to think and not What to think. My former school district has a policy where parents can call up the principal of any K-12 school and tell them they dont want their kids checking out certain books. Other than that, any student can check out any book. My former school district respects free speech and supports diversity of thought. They do not ban books like we’re living in Fahrenheit 451.

As an LGBTQ+ person I’m glad people are taking a stance against this. We should not blame the LGBTQ+, the children, the parents, nor the authors since they could’ve never expected these books to end up on children’s spaces. We should blame the people who brought those books and accepted them into schools. I’m not American so I’m unaware of the severity of the situation. Although it’s ok to reach children to respect others, we should draw the line if said material becomes sexually explicit in nature. And just because some of those books are LGBTQ+ centered, the people trying to eliminate sexual material from schools are immediately classified as LGBTQ+phobes. If anyone disagrees with any of my previous statements I would be glad to address it.
