I am the girl in the video, I was 15 and it was filmed over a weekend at the Great Eastern Hotel in London, I was wearing Paula Yates dress in the video. I am also the girl from the I don't like Mondays video. Wonderful memories of both

Fine Art of Surfacing - highly underrated album. One of my top ten fav's of all time. Also one of few where I like every song on the album. Something really came together on this album and a masterpiece was born.

Those albums with the inner sleeves and lyrics was the funniest way of learning english, love that time of excellent "new wave" bands. This brings me the best of memories and "The fine art..." is simply one of the best records that i ever heard. Thanks!

Extraordinary song. Easily the best thing The Rats ever did. Heartbreaking subject matter and Geldorf's rage and anger up-front and centre in his lyrics. No one could hold a candle to Geldorf when it came to debunking the empty lifestyles, myopia and apathy of those who enjoyed a privileged lifestyle. Every time I hear this song - and I've been listening to it for almost 40 years - it re-energises me to try to make a positive difference somehow. Fantastic posting!

True, this is a genius song! But many Rats songs would lyrically hold it own even now a days. Rat trap, Someone`s looking at you, Elephant`s graveyard(justice isn`t blind-it just looks the other way. Great lyrics! ) and so much more. So much better than most of the crap music we have now!

The whole Fine Art Of Surfacing album was a revelation. When they came on the scene with "Looking After Number 1", I was rolling about laughing as we were all still punk bashing at that time. Then along came "Tonic For The Troops" which was a whole new ball game with some great tracks, one of which was my favourite Rats single, Rat Trap. I'm proud to say I bought that single and helped depose Olivia and John from the No1 spot. By the time "Fine Art" arrived, the whole punk/new wave scene had evolved into something totally different and I class myself as musically privileged to have lived through this time. Diamond Smiles, Someone's Looking At You, and I Don't Like Mondays remind me of my early drinking days when the juke box actually had vinyl records loaded in it and you could watch the swing arm deliver the record to the stylus. Magic days.

I'm still fascinated by the sight of all those people pouring out of that horsebox at 1:27, and chilled by the message of this song and the portrayal of Diamond going out. How shallow are lots of things and people that on the surface look rich.

I was there when this video was being made at what was then the Great Eastern Hotel (now The Andaz) Liverpool Street London. We (hotel staff) had a ball that weekend with the Rats and Paula Yates (RIP). I stayed at the now Andaz hotel recently and although completely renovated the marble staircase is still recognisable. Current staff equally as nice as they were then 😂😂 Great times great party and great song.

This and ELO's 'Confusion' were the first two chart singles I ever bought, aged 11. From Woolworths! As a growed-up I photographed Sir Bob at 3 different gigs in the 90's for Camera Press. 4th time I saw him was in a field near Chichester in the early 2000's - I wasn't working that time, just great, great fun.

"Traffic's wild tonight" Diamond smiles her cocktail smile. Tonight she's in heavy disquise. She looks at her wrist to clock the passing time. "Weather's mild tonight" She wonders do they notice her eyes, She wonders will her glamour survive, And can they see she's going down a third time. Everybody tries, It's Dale Carnegie gone wild, But Barbara Cartland's child Long ago perfected the motionless glide. In the low voltage noise, Diamond seems so sure and so poised She shimmers for the bright young boys, And laugh's "Love is for others, but me it destroys" The girl in the cake Jumped out too soon by mistake, Somebody said the whole things half baked And Diamond lifts her glass and says "cheers" She stands to the side There's no more to this than meets the eye, Everybody drinks Martini dry, And talks about clothes and the latest styles. They said she did it With grace. They said she did it With style. They said she did it all Before she died Oh No I remember Diamond's smile Nobody saw her go, They said they should have noticed 'cause her dress was cut so low. Well it only goes to show Ha, ha, how many real men any of us know. She went up the stairs, Stood up on the vanity chair, Tied her lame belt around the chandelier, And went out kicking at the perfumed air. They said she did it With grace. They said she did it With style. They said she did it all Before she died Oh No I remember Diamond's smile

One of my favorite songs of the Boomtown Rats, even if the end is completely stolen from "Stop Your Sobbing" by the Kinks, but still, you have to steal something that ingenious first. My personal highlight is the hand clapping around 01:11, because it only occurs at this point in the song and reinforces what made the band for me at that time. Of course they had good songs, but it was the little things like that clapping that made the songs a bit more exciting.
