Lilith is one of my favorite characters in Borderlands, maybe up there in any media. This really isn't Lilith, I mean the costume is on point, but she's too damn Cynical. The cast of the original Borderlands game works, Roland is the Straight man with the strongest conscious. Brick is the muscle with the heart of gold. Mordecai is the reluctant drunk cynic. Finally Lilith is young, reckless, and overconfident. Lilith in the movie is a washed up version of the character, undefined by a childhood of discrimination because of her status as a siren. Overconfident in herself not because she has power and she knows it, but because she doesn't really give a shit what happens. For god sakes she's a vault hunter who couldn't give a damn about the vault or her place as one of only 6 sirens in existence. Lilith in the movie is Mordecai, but Mordecai works because he is a smaller part of a larger team, he's the realist, not the main character. Lilith as a character works much stronger as main character because she is fun to watch. Her abilities are unique, and so is her disposition. There is not doubt in my mind this movie could have worked, but when you disregard what came before just to pull upon tropes and characters from your future story you show that you aren't confident in the franchise you've spent 15 years building. Tina is another thing, she is quite possibly the most poignant, relatable, and heartfelt character in the series. She is instantly endeared to the player by both her relationship to Roland and Brick, and her backstory. Which is played for laughs yes, but is indeed heartfelt and interesting. She is character a who is flanked by trauma, insecurities, and walls upon walls. All hidden behind a broken mental state. She is not a brat who cannot handle herself, constantly touting herself as a chosen one and special. If Tiny in the games had any clue that she might be a siren she would laugh it off because she is too insecure to see herself as worthy. Why is Tina even in this movie? Because she is recognizable, and popular.

The thing that baffles me is why *these* characters? Claptrap and Tiny Tina are strong flavors that quickly wear out their welcome, which is why they were only bit parts in the games (and being given bigger roles later was symptomatic of the issues the franchise developed over time). What is Kreig doing here? His literal introduction in B2 was about how he fell in love with Maya at first sight. This group already had a big dumb muscle man: Brick! The lack of Mordecai and Bloodwing is criminal, utter disrespect. And one last thing... *[ S P O I L E R S ]* Lilith not even having her Siren powers until Act 3 really hampers the action throughout the movie. Roland is the guns guy, Mordecai is sneaky, Brick punches, and Lilith has crazy space magic - that's what makes them distinct from each other! There's no logical reason to change this about her, because being a firebrand is both her character class and personality archetype. Instead, Lilith in the movie is just kinda dour and she uses guns like everybody else. Boring! How does Hollywood keep fucking these video game adaptations up? It's so easy! Borderlands is Mad Max in space: everybody is insane, including the good guys. Resident Evil is a bunch of cops trapped in a house, getting killed by zombies and death traps (the corporate conspiracy is such a small part of the first game). Assassin's Creed is historical action/espionage, so basically 007 in the past - and most fans would thank you for cutting out all the stuff relating to the Animus and genetic memory, an overwrought framing device which has been the #1 albatross around the neck of this franchise since the beginning.

For context, im a HUGE borderlands fan. Ok so when i heard about the plot synopsis, my bar was lowered to the ground. Like as in went from legit comedy to like, so bad its good thing. Watch it with besties and had to pause it cause i was so FLOORED with the ideas they decided to go with. Spoilers ahead 1) If they wanted to keep to the plot to the games, vaguely, they couldve just done the plot of Borderlands 1. NOTHING happens in 1. You kill bandits, get vault key, repeat 3 times then get vault key stolen by Atlas and go fight them at end of game. There is SO much wiggle room with that. 2) they went to a weird bizarre alternate reality of a mix of 1 and 2. Tina Tina is both Tina AND Angel. The Atlas CEO is supposed to be himself AND Hamdsome Jack. Tina is JUST the orphaned kid of some demo experts in the games, not some weird atlas clone? 3) Its genuinely weird cause they got some things absolutely spot on. The cars are 1-1 in the game, Tinas rocket launcher and the Atlas ARs are EXACTLY like they are in borderlands 3, lots of random location names are lore accurate- which confuses me. They got these weird details perfect but completely butcher like the MAIN plot points of the characters. 4) I would argue that the movie is ACTIVELY worse if you know the source material. If you dont, its just kinda meh, boring? If you do like our watchparty, we had to stop the movie for 2 minutes straight to be in stunned silence. 5) On a positive note, and im really scraping the barrel here, the costume design was kinda fire? I was in love with the krieg costume tweaks. Side note: i dont mind the Tannis and Moxxi castings. Tannis is primarily a researcher who is bad with people and you dont really lose that with aging her up, in fact makes more sense than trying to explain her in game lore of having ptsd mixed with eridium (which isnt even in the movie) poisoning And moxxi is actually around 40 ish (she has grown children that you see for like 2 seconds in the moxie)

Olderlands could have worked if they wnet for "hip for the kids" humor but fully utilized Jamie Lee Curtis, make it sound like it mocks its audience... if that audience was Kotaku staff (middle aged cat ladies). Cast Terry Crews instead of Kevin Hart. Make it like Prisoners of the Ghostland or Mandy. Or Maggie.

I think the feeling of the games can definitely work. Pandora is a planet where everyone has given up. It's what is left after several corporations have scarred and perverted the surface and it's inhabitants. The Vault Hunters aren't necessarily nice people. They like murder and money. And maybe they find a way to better themselves along the way. This movie needed a Suicide Squad vibe that transitioned to a more Guardians feel. The humor can work if used at the right moments or if it's just tweaked a bit. But practically everything/everyone attached to this project was wrong.

Madam web was fun to talk about as a train wreck. Borderlands is competently made, but makes so many weird decisions it's not going to be remembered a year from now

I think this movie could've worked, but just about everything went wrong. Studio interference, the wrong writer, the wrong director, the wrong characters, questionable casting, etc. Also you definitely need Claptrap in a Borderlands movie lol.

I just saw it last night and can’t shake the feeling that it was 90% written as a fully unrelated project until some exec went “Hey! We can make this into one of those uhhh video game things, right?”. So many strange decisions make it feel very far from Borderlands, like the lack of powers/class abilities (which would have been a fun and easy way to give each character a unique power signature) and the random mix of characters. I know it’s not that simple, but I was left wishing that they had 1:1 ripped the plot of BL1 or BL2 rather than the baffling mix of story elements that we ended up getting.

I read a script for this movie like six years ago and it wasn’t half-bad. It is very much not the same script that they eventually turned into this movie.

I just realized that this movie comes out the first year that there's an Oscar for casting director. If the Golden Raspberry Awards adds the same category then this movie is a shoe in. For a Razzy I mean.

Had I not played Borderlands 2 I wouldn't know what a "sycophant" is. It's for example, a person who takes a beloved actress of dozens of populist low-brow movies, and drags her down to the level of OSCARS of all things.

I think they picked a good actress for Moxxi, her kids Scooter & Ellie are already adults in the games, Moxxi only starts to look the age you'd expect from that in BL3.

There is something very "none of this matters, we're just shuffling money around to keep from paying taxes on it" about modern blockbusters like this. Studios have always been about Money-First, but these modern power people are so open about it that it makes it hard to suspend my disbelief.

Because "leadership" makes everyone lazy by being cheap and lazy themselves, and it gets worse over time. Everyone's taking as much as possible with the least effort possible. Take, take back, take again, take back more... It builds in magnitudes until we fall with no style at all. Must stop doing what we're told - that is the key to everything.
