Sinfonia String Orchestra - Guest Conductor and Composer Armond Vance Wimberly
DMYS selected Armond Vance Wimberly to compose a brand new piece for Sinfonia String, with the goal of diversifying the repertoire available to young musicians. Sinfonia students brainstormed the qualities of a composer important to them in this selection, and provided guidance to the composer that they sought a non-classical, unique piece that was “creepy, intense, and fast.” Armond was on site in April to workshop the piece with DMYS Sinfonia String students.
Armond Vance is a multidisciplinary teaching artist originally from Toledo, Ohio, and currently directing a middle school orchestra and mariachi program in East Fort Worth. As a composer, Armond has written and arranged pieces for professional and amateur ensembles, such as the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth ISD District Youth Orchestra, the Columbus Promusica Chamber Youth Orchestra, and the Gunn High School Chamber Orchestra in Palo Alto, California.
Armond’s mission as a music educator, performing artist, and composer is to expose young developing string musicians to styles of music that are outside of the European classical music canon, particularly in genres of music such as Dancehall, Hip-hop, Rap, Afrobeat, Reggaeton, mariachi, and folk.
