Up is the answer for storing any inventory. Heavy duty metal racks are inexpensive and easy to find used or even free if you dig around. You have the forklift already. You could easily consolidate your products into 1/2 the space you’re currently using. Plus the snow issue all but disappears.

Hey, I recommend some cantilever racking to store the wood as you grow. You don't have to go high, but can get two stacks into one area without customers having to reach high. If you put the backside of the rack to the road so you can load it with the forks on the tractor without going onto the road.

If you printed out a picture of your yard from from Google earth (put a dimension of say 8 feet on it to work from,) and then drew your new 8 and 10 foot piles on it to suit the measurements you wanted, you could paint the tarmac of the yard to show where the piles need to be and save yourselves a whole lot of problems later on when the wood piles and dunnage starts creeping and when people start pulling the piles around. You could even use the goggle earth picture and some tracing paper to sort out a more professional drawing that you can keep for later consideration as things change, and when or if you want to squeeze more wood into the area, say on fixed racks or something similar.

I'm surprised that the state lets them put it that close to the road (unless it is further than it looks), also those 8 footers are likely to get buried when the highway plow goes by. I would bet that the customers like not having to cut the 10s or 12s down through.

That's getting close to the road and I'd find it worrisome for a number of reasons. You might consider pulling your survey out and making sure that you're not conducting any commerce encroaching on the highway right-of-way and that'd include at least the minimum depth along your frontage required for customer pull-off loading and access for your equipment before the inventory stacks starts. That way if anything unfortunate happens along the frontage, at least there's no doubt that your business activities were entirely and safely on your property and not in the public highway rightaway. Thirty years in business on a very busy city street and I found common sensical risk avoidance seldom if ever could directly prove that it was worth the effort/costs, but no regrets.

Just a thought because it's done now, but maybe a story stick would be useful. A 1/4"x1 1/2" x 8'+ stick with sharpie marks on it would let you do layout a bit faster. Or maybe a tape is fast enough.

Just a thought. When you do get snow, and it's quite a bit, whoever plows the road will throw it towards your product which is now many feet closer. I fear with a significant snowfall the municipal plow will bury your 8' stacks of lumber with dirty salted road snow.

I believe that it is going to get old fast loading that middle pile by hand! How can things be rearranged so that you can sticker as you go coming off the LT40 and move the whole pile into place without handling it again? Putting the piles sideways will take up more room. Putting the piles on an angle so the forklift can get in will take less room than sideways and more room than end wise. Can the yard be re-arranged a little to make this work. I think it would save a lot of labor! Old pile would be picked up and set aside by forklift. New pile put in place by forklift. Level out the top of the new pile by hand. Put old pile on top with forklift.

...Maybe set the stacks just *a bit* farther apart in each row?... I'll bet it would be nice to be able to fit the snowblower's width comfortably *between* the stacks as well as between the rows. (My guess would be that your snowblower is 30" wide rather than the narrow little 24" model we use here in the city. But hey, if your unit is narrow like ours, then maybe 30" between stacks would be fine.) Great stuff, every day from you guys.
