Pretty much any chorus, flanger, or phaser can be converted into a vibrato effect, simply by lifting/disconnecting the dry signal such that only the modulated wet signal remains. HOWEVER, there remain two important differences between doing that, and a more pleasing vibrato like the VB-2, and the vibrato setting on the old CE-1 chorus ensemble. First, where chorus, flanging and phasing sound decent using a triangle wave LFO, vibrato sounds less "musical" unless using a sinusoidal LFO. Indeed, for my money, that was the special characteristic of the CE-1; it used one waveform for chorus, and another for vibrato. The other virtue of the VB-2 is that the modulation depth can be ramped up, to more closely mimic the way that vocal vibrato, or that on wind instruments like flutes, fades in as you run out of breath. I suspect that some other digital pedals might be able to achieve that with an expression pedal controlling modulation depth. But I think the VB-2 is the only all analog pedal automatically doing so. And since I have to field queries about the topic from time to time, note that vibrato is the sort of effect that becomes imperceptible at very slow speeds. Flangers, phasers and even choruses can still be quite audible as effects when operating at slow speeds (e.g., slower than 1-2hz). Not so with vibrato. Unless the pitch deviations are huge roller-coaster sweeps (and pleasing vibrato really aims for mimicking the sort of gentle wobble in the human voice), you'll begin to wonder if the effect is on when attempting modulation speeds slower than 2hz. So if you have anything that incorporates a vibrato setting, make sure you don't run it too slow. FWIW, I recently experimented with stereo vibrato. The Magnatone amps have stereo vibrato, but their vibrato is essentially complementary, driven by a single common LFO. That is, whenever one side goes a little sharp, the other side goes flat by a similar amount, such that the effect moves from side to side. I used two independent LFOs, one for each channel, that occasionally come into sync for a moment and move quickly out of sync. The effect is immersive, enveloping, and the sort of thing you just want to move into and live there; something I'd love to see in a commercial product.
@AskZac4 жыл бұрын
The VB-2 has some magic. Would love to hear a Magnatone.
@adamnesbitt11 Жыл бұрын
The Chorus and Vibrato settings on the CE-1 are both actually chorus sounds so your commentary on LFO shapes doesn't make sense there
@markhammer643 Жыл бұрын
@@adamnesbitt11 Actually, it's the reverse. "Chorus" consists of pitch-wobble combined with clean "unwobbled" signal, mimicking what happens when 2 or more people try to sing the same notes in synchrony, and vibrato simply leaves the clean out The thing is that when there is clean signal going head-to-head with the time-modulated signal, triangular shape works just fine. When there is *only* time-modulated signal, one's attention is directed more strongly to the shape of the sweep, and sinusoidal sweep - where the "turnaround" at the two extremes of sweep is subtler - makes for a more relaxed and musical sound. Optimal sweep shape is also connected to sweep speed. As mentioned in the initial post, vibrato has to modulate faster than chorus to be perceptible AS vibrato. One can easily convert any chorus, flanger, or phaser to produce vibrato, by simply lifting the resistor that mixes in dry/clean signal. BUT, only a small fraction of the speed control becomes usable at that point. One of the elements that has differentiated great flangers from ho-hum ones is the shape of the sweep. Forty years back, a number of designers/writers touted the virtues of a "hypertriangular" sweep. This is a sweep shape that is triangular as it approaches the "top" of the sweep, but becomes sinusoidal as it sweeps toward the "bottom". This has the virtue of accentuating small movement/change when the comb filtering moves through the range of fundamental frequencies and low-order harmonics, and quickly passing through the range where only the highest harmonics reside. Such a sweep is a big part of what made the Electric Mistress such a popular flanger. BUT, as great as it sounds with very slow sweeps, it's terrible when the sweeps are fast. I've built a number of clones of the old black Ross Phaser. It is essentially a clone of the first EHX Small Stone. *That* pedal's "color" switch selected between hypertriangular LFO for slow sweeps, and triangular for faster ones. The Ross clone only has hypertriangular. While it sounds great at long slow resonant sweeps, turn the speed up and it's really jarring and unpleasant. I recently modded one of my Ross clones to produce ONLY triangular sweep, and found it far more usable across the entire speed range, if somewhat less majestic-sounding at the slowest speeds. This is the long way of saying that the virtue and "musicality" of the *shape* of the LFO sweep covaries with speed. Boss wisely chose to soften the sweep shape of the LFO for vibrato, since it relies on faster speeds than chorus. And yes, I am a well-trained psychologist with a strong background in cognition, and had the privilege of being taught by the godfather of "auditory scene analysis", the late great Al Bregman.
@adamnesbitt11 Жыл бұрын
@@markhammer643 In your eagerness to display your knowledge you've missed my point entirely. Both the 'chorus' and 'vibrato' modes of the CE-1 are a blend of dry signal and vibrato, therefore they're both chorus sounds and not true vibrato. The only way to get an actual vibrato out of that pedal is by inserting a dummy jack into one of the stereo outputs to trick it into sending the dry signal through your dummy jack, leaving you with just the wet vibrato signal. Edit: congratulations on your prowess in the field of psychology though, I guess?
@markhammer643 Жыл бұрын
@@adamnesbitt11 *Available* due to the two jacks, but not *blended* . There's a difference. What exactly do you think vibrato consists of, if not ONLY pitch modulated signal? The VB-2 provides no path for clean signal when the effect is engaged.

More recently there’s a passage in Rammstein’s “Ich will” where they put a clean guitar through it for 16 bars and it sounds incredible. Pretty much all of the other demos just show players who are clueless as to its application. If not managed right, the pedal can sound like shit. Subtlety is the key. Thanks for your great content.

Zac. I would love to see a video or an article on your opinion of country music as a whole today. Why amazing songwriters and musicians, in this underground movement. Are not validated, mentioned, or given any thought by Nashville. From someone like you and me. who know all the old classics, and understand the genius of it. How come an artist that writes an amazing song lyrically, and musically , is over shadowed by processed , autotuned, and basic lyrical writing. I personally will never like the modern sound, its a game of catchup to pop, and rap music. pop and rap should be its own thing, and country should be it's own thing imo. I honestly think country would stand on a bigger lyrical and musical leg, with these amazing artists. Rather than another single about lifted trucks, clubs, cleshay lyrics, name dropping so they "seem" like they know what they're talking about. Ik im not alone. There is a lot of us on the underground side that dont listen to the radio, or watch the awards. Because 90% of the songs are the same. the people we see as real poets, and musicians. Are never mentioned. Cody jinks honestly does not have a bad song, his stuff is country gold. whitey Morgan has that outlaw sound mixed with his personal twists down to a t. Sturgill simpson was and still is amazing in his own way. Ward davis, what a great songwriter. Tyler childers with that bluegrass meets outlaw country . hank 3 will always be a favorite of mine. His music is not radio worthy, but he's more real than a lot of people. And many more. I dont have my studio fully finished , i plan on making a channel and podcast. To talk about these points, and the amazing old artists/ studio musicians .

Bill Frisell would like to have a word with you about a Bigsby on a Tele.
@AskZac3 жыл бұрын
I would love to chat with him, and would be happy to hear his thoughts on the Bigsby

@@AskZac I’d love to hear that chat! It seems to be his go-to bridge now, but I don’t see him touch it very often. Definitely interesting.
