If you watch this movie and think about it, Bligh wasn't actually a bad Captain according to the way he's portrayed in this film. Sure, he's strict, but he's never actually unfair or needlessly brutal. Also, he's a good captain because he's not neglectful of his crew and does look after them, especially when he's cast adrift in the life boat with the others.
@HotaruZoku8 жыл бұрын

+Andrew Little Bligh has been reconsidered by history. It's believed Fletcher suffered from a "borderline personaliy" and though Bligh himself had a bit of a temper, he was a fairly progressive commander for his time, and was highly concerned with the morale and health of his crew. For example, he ensured that the rotation of watches allowed his crew to get a full eight hours sleep. Usually it was only four hours. He ensured they danced and had activities to keep their peace of mind.
@WintersWar8 жыл бұрын
agree, he's fair, but has an ego and some spite in him. which helps me understand why he had 3 mutiny's in his career.

Oh I've always respected Bligh as a naval officer and a gentleman, especially as a sublime navigator, but interpersonally there's no doubt that the man did have some sort of an escalation coming. *Sorry, long explanation* 🙈 What people tend to forget is that the Bounty mutiny was not only the consequence of some love-drunk sailors longing for paradise. The crew had lost faith in their captain's decision-making qualities months earlier. They spent 31 days trying to avoid shipwrecking on an unnecessarily dangerous sea route. As far as I can remember, Bligh basically just wanted to go around legendary Cape Horn for his own naval reputation. He insisted on that even after his initial first officer urged him to be reasonable and put the lives of his men before his own ambitions. And instead of drawing conclusions from that first experience, he announced to go around the bloody cape again on the way home... which clearly wasn't met with enthusiasm, so he furthermore decided to restore respect with excessive telling-offs, niggling cleaning schedules etc. So yes, Bligh was the textbook example of a respectable officer and a brilliant navigator, yet he was not the best leader whenever it became most crucial. Frankly, Bligh put his ego before his crew ... while reprimanding Fletcher about personal matters. Sure, a good crew blindly follows every captain's order, yet a good leader also knows when to listen to his/her closest advisors = just like it was Friar's duty earlier to criticize Bligh's leadership throughout the Cape fiasco. But the captain didn't appreciate criticism and misjudged Friar, only to overestimate Christian (who actually wasn't a disloyal officer or a primitive man either, just a young sailor who lost faith in his captain and simultaneously found love ... explosive combination 🙈).

Epic movie, masterful performance by Hopkins, and that haunting music score... all made more poignant for being a true event, the living legacy of which survives to this day. The anchor of the Bounty is displayed outside the wooden courthouse in Adamstown, and the mixed race descendants of John Adams and Fletcher Christian still live on Pitcairn Island.

@mwhite65225 ай бұрын
I would say Bligh was also very stubborn. According to historians he also had a penchant for brutally insulting members of his crew for mistakes, and it added up, causing resentment. He also made a mistake of threatening the men with death by hanging for jumping ship and deserting their watch, but when they did, he instead chose to have them flogged, which may have made him appear soft or malleable, maybe making the crew think a mutiny could be successful. Add that to the temptation the crew felt with the natives, and it's easy to see how the eventual mutiny was put into motion.

When your young , you cannot understand nor grasp the depths or problems of being in command . It is not for the faint at at heart . You must often times divorce yourself from emotion and let the subordinates know you mean busness . That is why having friends are far and few when your in command . But also the trick is to not be hated . You have to mean wut you say and do wut you mean to do but also like children at times you must praise in public and let them know its business NOT personal ......which is hard to tell the diff when you are young .

So much rationale in the comments for what is obvious. Saying no and other defiance's in this movie, the way it was portrayed, were hanging offenses. The bottom line, is a lack of faith and respect for the captain. Bligh is only guilty figuratively, of trying to be the best captain instead of just being a captain.
