From elsewhere in the broadcast, this appears to have aired the day after the Super Bowl. And I say I was 10. Hence my guess of 1/25/82.

Frazier Thomas died almost exactly a year to the day after Bob Bell taped his last show as Bozo the Clown. So, I was doubly sad & as a fan of *Family Classics* too, I never thought it would be the same.

Oh well thanks, I do have the whole morning's broadcast, which as I recall runs two hours. I had posted this particular clip in the early aughts and was hit by WGN with a copyright strike, so was reluctant to repost. However, I'd seen other people putting up clips from Bozo, and my delicate assumption is that WGN is aware they really don't intend to monetize this material. (Also, it has always surprised me how little TV stations *keep* in their archives, so I could easily be the only person in possession of a copy anyway). I'm not against posting more, but two hours is a lot, and several chunks are Bugs Bunny and Popeye cartoons and the like which would be picked up by a crawler.

I'm surprised the guy in the blue suit was running things, and Bozo acted as his assistant, bringing out the prizes. I'd think it would be the other way around, because this was the Bozo show, not the-guy-in-the-blue-suit show (sorry, I don't know the guy's name).
@BrianRetro3 жыл бұрын
That's Frazier Thomas. He had a huge presence (no pun intended) on WGN for many years until he died in 1985. This was normal for the first 24 years of the show. Before Frazier Thomas, there was Ringmaster Ned Locke and he had much more control over the show than Frazier Thomas did. In fact, many would nickname the show, "Ned's Circus" instead of "Bozo's Circus." After Frazier Thomas passed away, it was decided that Bozo, then played by Joey D'Auria, should be the host for his own show. Until then, the Bozo Show in Chicago was the only Bozo show to not have Bozo as the main host.

@@BrianRetro The first year after Frazier died Pat Hurley acted as the authority figure but not the host. I understand the reasoning in making Bozo the host but lack of the authority figure was truly missed after Thomas died and Pat Hurley was let go.

Well it was easy in this case, since I am the boy in this running of the GPG. I had always had the tape around (until digitizing). I feel your quandary. 1978 would have been a little too early for your family to have likely had a VCR at home....

Hi Marc, I got a question. You may not know but I'm going to ask it anyway. Do you know if this was taped in the famous Studio One at WGN Studios? The reason I'm asking is that I know they were using up until the last days Bob Bell performed as Bozo. That set was the one that was used for the rest of the show's existence. From January of 1981 until the early part of 1984, it was still this red "in-the-round" set. I saw a video on here that was dated March 5th, 1984 and it was still on this set. Now it is entirely possible that they filmed on the new set from March 12th until April 4th, the day of Bob Bell's last show, giving a total of 24 shows on the new set (four weeks, three days each week, two shows each day), but the only way that could be possible is if this was not in Studio One. No way would they have been able to dismantle this set and have the new set built up in a matter of five days.
