The reason for the lack of headroom is that the diameter of the tunnels is quite small meaning trains have to be smaller to fit.

Honestly, it's a medical thing at this point! I'm 5' 10" in shoes and that makes me feel like stooping over automatically... And I love this train! I just forget how small people used to be back when the system was opened... With proper nutrition and growth hormone exposure in our dairy products? Boom! We're now giants amongst our own people! Go ride the Coney Island Cyclone for the same eerie effect. What now only fits one normal adult male and is now essentially a metal lap bar was once a shoulder-height restraint for 2 people... Now apply that logic to the ever shrinking airline seat and wonder few people fit comfortably in economy class...

The Glasgow subway is unique being the only one of its kind. It is much better now that it has been updated. It had got very run down and outdated and was threatened with closure, but I am sure that its future is assured. Although the headroom is limited, the smaller scale reduced the cost of construction, so in that way it is cool. Thanks for uploading.

Yes I agree the subway is unique in being unique. Any tautology is clearly intentional.

The City and South London Railway (now part of the Northern Line) was originally narrow gauge, like the Glasgow Subway remained. London enlarged the tunnels in the 1920s I think. Jago Hazzard has covered the topic. I’ve followed the Glasgow Subway present and history closely for the 12 years Glasgow has been home, and other than entertaining consideration of closure as an option in part of the report to layout future options for the subway, don’t believe there has ever been an ounce of serious consideration of closure in recent times. So unless you’ve got a source on otherwise, or are referring back to 70s pre-modernisation, politely will say think that’s rubbish. It’s a great and unique system, but only so far in what it is; and it could be so much more if the ambition and investment were put into public transit in Glasgow.
@AllensTrains

It's one of the oldest railways in the world Opened in 1896 as cable hauled like San Francisco street cars the old wooden cars were converted to electric and ran until 1977 when the new now old trains replaced them. The old cars were lifted out by crane every night for servicing, there were no points on the system and the sheds on the surface.

This system reminds me of the Sydney Metro , but with one MAJOR difference ; a section of the Sydney Metro tunnel was built to accommodate double decker trains for the first decade of its existence. After watching the video a second time , I also noticed that the Glasgow train carriages still have partial divisions between them , whereas in Sydney , the couplings are completely unobstructed . As the Metro is approaching a station , there is an automated announcement , for example " We will be stopping at Castle Hill " , which is more informative than a tone . Lastly , on the subject of annoying sounds , I recently traveled on an interurban train from Sydney to Lithgow ( Blue Mountains ) , and before EVERY stop ,as part of the station announcement was "Please mind the gap between the train and the platform " , by the guard ( live not automated ) . It is NOT necessary to say this for every station and common sense should dictate that not all stations have serious platform gaps , the worst I noticed was about 12 inches , but most were less than 4 inches . Constant repetition of the same message becomes very irritating during the course of a two and a half hour trip each way , and should be reserved for situations where it is actually needed , because passengers will tend to ignore them and the next time I intend to use such a service , I will take ear plugs ! I don't blame the train guard for this , but railway policy . Those passengers who listen to music through earphones have the right idea ! 👍

Actually, it's easier and more proficient to implement driverless operation on the Glasgow Subway than on the London Underground due to several reasons: - The Glasgow Subway is a very small network of only 15 stations and its platform layouts are mostly straight unlike the London Underground, so platform doors can be installed for such operations. Not to mention, it's signalling sysyem is pretty simple compared to most huge rail networks. - While the London Underground may have already introduced new Picadilly line trains that have the potential to be driverless, driverless operations are extremely unlikely due to being a huge network, a complex signalling system, the curved layout of numerous platforms makes it challenging to install platform doors, and various others. Even if driverless operation can be implemented, the cabs needed to remain with the driver doing other tasks inside for safety purposes (GoA3).

Hi David - I’m Irish myself, living in Manchester 21 years and have been fascinated by Glasgow’s metro system for a long time - from what little I know about this line, it resembles the Circle Line Tube in London and I’d love to see the DART Underground for Dublin taking shape - one thing that I do like about these trains is that there is enough room to carry a heavy suitcase on board (level boarding?) and I don’t know how similar they are to Edinburgh’s trams for disabled access to the island platforms - aside from the Metrolink Trams here in Manchester and the current London Tube Trains, it compares well to the DART Trains and the LUAS Trams in Dublin - does the Glasgow Metro get very busy at peak hours? And what major bus/tram/rail connections is it close to? Does it have good interchange points within Glasgow City Centre?
@threesixnine369six
@threesixnine369six 8 ай бұрын
Buchanan Street and St Enoch subway stations are the best connected as they are a few steps away from Glasgow Queen Street, Glasgow Central, all the bus routes that run through the area, plus Buchanan Bus Station. Outside of the city centre, Partick is its own wee hub in the west end, with a subway station below ground, a bus hub at street level, and an elevated railway station. The subway does get busy at peak times. Not London busy, but busy enough as it connects the busy city centre with the busy west end. It also gets crowded on game days at Ibrox. Unfortunately as of yet only two subway stations are wheelchair accessible. But keep in mind, the subway is a very small system. Buses, cars and trains are the main way to get around Glasgow, in fact the city has the second largest urban rail network in Britain after London, albeit with a lot of room for improvement.

They usually start with lines going between the center and areas where many people live. When the city grows that overloads the central station, so they build circles with interchanges. If the city is in a flat and boring landscape, the metro network will look like a spider web. I don't know why they started with a circle and then stopped here. Shenanigans were definitely involved.

Does anyone know how the Glasgow Subway trains speed an acceleration compares to say a deep level Tube (London Underground) such as the Jubilee line?

They're definitely smaller height wise, I'm 6'1 and I can touch the ceiling on my tippy toes. Anyone over 6'4 are going to really struggle with these new trains.
