1:59 Much as I like this moment of mute fear on Legolas' face, I wish the focus had been on Gimli instead. Gimli's the dwarf, and they're literally in an ancient dwarf-kingdom which was emptied because of the Balrog. In the book, Gimli is so horrified that he drops his axe, cries out "Durin's Bane!" and covers his face rather than look at the demon of his people's past. It's a powerful moment, and I wish they'd shown it in this film.

The Balrog (Durin's Bane) sensed the presence of the Ring, and that's what awakened him from his slumber, he was drawn to it's ancient evil power. Being a Maia of similar rank to Sauron, the Balrog probably would have taken the ring from Frodo for himself, rather than hand it over to Sauron, whom he viewed as not worthy enough to serve, unlike his true master Morgoth (Melkor) who was banished from the universe at this point, but is prophesized to return in the final end of times battle Dagor Dagorath. Would have been very interesting indeed to see what would have happened had the balrog succeeded over Frodo and the fellowship and seized the Ring for his own.

this scene is perfect. The awful Hobbit trilogy will never amount to this work of art

When I was a kid I remember watching this with my dad and he would always be able to sing the lyrics of the music playing during the broken bridge part. Or rather what he thought were the lyrics anyway.

I like how in the book ,it said the goblins were watching this unfold and they were all shocked when they seen Gandalf turn around because no one stands up to a balrog.

One of my favorite scenes from this film. Said film was the first time I'd heard of the Lord of the Rings.

I remember watching it as a kid and loving the movie and swords but it took a minute to process how badass that was. Actually the reason I do archery now
