I love the detail that Boromir is very clearly finished after the second arrow hits at 6:05. He falls to his knees and only barely manages to stop himself from fully hitting the dirt, staring at the ground stunned and struggling to breathe. Then he looks up and sees the two hobbits he still needs to protect and you can see the fire reignite in his eyes before he gets back up and manages to fell three more Uruk with what are essentially his death throes. The mightiest man may be slain by one arrow, and Boromir was pierced by many.

4:23 Even though he had made his mistakes, he was willing to die for 2 Halflings he had grown to care for more than most in his life. As he struck down numerous foes, the odds ever growing against him, it was here The Son of Gondor made his last stand. *Thwip* he heard the bowstring snap and turned, feeling the arrowhead penetrating his chest. *Thwip* Another hitting near his neck, he stood again still fighting against the Vile Uruk-Hai Filth. Until at last, a final *Thwip* was heard as a third arrowhead pierced his heart. Looking up in Rage and Hatred as the Leader Uruk was about the fire another, he had hope as his King came to his rescue. Suddenly pinned by the throat to a tree with a shield, fear grows within as he watches from the sidelines, his king wounded. Unable to give aid. He saw him stab the Uruk’s leg with his elven Knife. With a roar, he rips it out, licks off the blood, and throws it back, seeing it blocked in air. His king, back on his feet with his sword in hand, he fights furiously, severing an arm and piercing the chest. Still he lives. Grabbing him by the arm, pulling him closer, roaring in his face, it is finally over as Aragorn severed the beast’s head from his body, and fell. Running to his friend, he realized, it was too late to save him, as the said their goodbyes, Aragorn had sworn to the Valiant fallen warrior, The White City would not fall. Finally, finishing the departure from this plain of existence with “I would have followed you my Brother. My Captain. My King.” And with tears in his eyes, seeing the light fade from his friend, he responded after a moment: “Be at Peace, Son of Gondor”

I love that, when he raises the sword to his face, it feels like one last prayer. One last moment of humanity and call to powers greater. Aragon is a poet, a healer, a true leader, his heart yearns for peace and the safety of all men. He’s a warrior by necessity, his true heart lies elsewhere. And we see him here, going from being solemn, vulnerable and open with Frodo, the panicked “go! RUN!” He wasn’t sure in that moment. But soon as frodos made some distance, he slowly falls from his poetic, human heart, into the warrior he needs to be. It’s a silly comparison, but, I work with kids, and no matter what emotional turmoil I may be enduring at home, soon as I enter through the doors to school it’s left at the door. I feel this is a similar moment, he’s forcing himself to abandon the emotion right now, and focus one thing, fighting long enough to ensure Frodo gets away. I don’t think survival was on his mind, well, not his anyway

Elendil (Quenya: [ɛˈlendil]) is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He is mentioned in The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. He was the father of Isildur and Anárion, last lord of Andúnië on the island of Númenor, and having escaped its downfall by sailing to Middle-earth, became the first High King of Arnor and Gondor. In the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, Elendil and Gil-galad laid siege to the Dark Lord Sauron's fortress of Barad-dûr, and fought him hand-to-hand for the One Ring. Both Elendil and Gil-galad were killed, and Elendil's son Isildur took the Ring for himself.

I’ve been a fan of these since I was a lad. My mother, hates fantasy movies. She loves “real” movies, what she means is historical, biopics, or period dramas. Nothing fantastical. I convinced her after many years to watch these with me, and she thoroughly enjoyed them. The one moment that stuck out to me was boromirs death. The entire movie she was being rather harsh towards him, which makes sense he’s the most flawed of the fellowship. Thinking that he was “evil” when he went for the ring on the mountainside and cheered for Frodo when he escapes boromir, saying “get away he’s gonna kill you for it!”. Well, when boromir rises again, I heard a slight sniffle from her. And as he’s on his knees panting and looking up at the hobbits she quietly said “stay down butt, you’ve done your bit” (meaning your part, also, butt is Welsh slang for friend), then he got back to his feet and for a moment I think she believed he’d survive. She cried when Aragon did. I cried when she did.
