Hey all! Today, we will be comparing two of the most POWERFUL light pods that your money can buy, the Baja Designs LP6 Pro against the new Diode Dynamics SS5 Pro. For the purposes of this experiment, I am only measuring the light intensity at the hotspot of each light. This is not a measurement of total light output although I imagine the results would be very similar.
BTW: I realized that the Five Inch Amazon light pod was actually a 4.5" Light pod! The link for it is below.
Both companies have a lot of high quality light pods besides the two shown in this video. Please keep in mind that these lights are intended for offroad use only. Both companies do have an SAE approved fog beam pattern 3” light pod if you are interested in keeping it street legal.

i’d take the baja designs over the diode dynamics, for a few reasons. 1 is color tempature, the 5000K for the baja has a lot less eye fatigue when riding a long time. 2 also thought it doesn’t go as far the bleed of light going to the sides is actually important, especially off-roading or racing in my can am. 3 proven and tested. baja designs has been at the front of baja 1000 trucks for years and years and the conditions are second maybe only to the dakar rally. i love the distance on the DD that’s one thing i’ve always liked about them but the other factors kinda make me lean to BD more, but it also applies to situation more, if you’re on the road a lot or traveling by car and need light at times where it’s super dark i’m sure they’d both do you good at that point

Not sure if it was stated in the video but one thing to consider is the lights will decrease output. Great review video I almost had me searching on Amazon for the $20 lights LOL. Seriously though when looking for my first lighting upgrade I looked at both Baja and Diode Dynamics and price made me get the SS3 SAE Pro fogs. I was so impressed with the SS3 that I also got their Stage Series amber 42" light bar for my roof rack, SS2 white chase lights that double as a red running lights and preordered their rock light kit. The reason I watched this video is because I was thinking of running SS5's behind my 4 Runners grill versus A light bar. Both Baja Designs and Diode Dynamics make awesome products but for me Diode Dynamics lower price with great quality and an 8 year warranty made it an easy choice.

Thanks for doing this comparison! The Diode Dynamics SS5 Sport with spot optics will produce higher beam intensity than the Pro version: “NOTE: The Pro Spot uses a larger LED emitter, which spreads the light output into a 20-degree pattern. Although the Pro has much more raw output, the larger beam pattern results in slightly lower total intensity.” (straight from their website). I just got a pair of SS5 Sports with spot optics and another pair with the combo. Both seem to put out a more intense beam compared to the Pro. But if you get the driving and flood optics, the tables are turned, and the Pro model really outshines, pardon the pun, the Sport model.

I'm looking for a spot pattern light and from what your saying I would be happier with the sport over the pro SS5?
@aaronolsen8787
@aaronolsen8787 Жыл бұрын
@@joshadam7429 I think it depends what your needs/wants are. If you're looking for the most distance then the sport SS5's are going to be superior to the pro SS5's. The pro's have a 20° pattern vs the sport 15° pattern which equates to a difference of 321.44 feet of distance at 1 lux and 623.2 feet of distance at .25 lux. Even the BD XL racer with a 6° pattern only has 358,731 cd at 40w vs the SS5 sport 15° spot has 406,000 cd at 40w. The only lights that provide more distance are the vision x 6.7 and 8.7 cg2 single chip light cannon (10° spot), vision x 8.7 ADV cannon (unsure of beam pattern) and the morimoto big banger HXB spot which has 535,000 cd. I'm unsure of its beam pattern as well. I had 4 vision x knock off 4.7" single chip 25w light cannons that used genuine top bin luminous led chips and they were fantastic for distance. They had a 10° pattern and easily put light past 1000' which I measured and also had more than enough width for my need. I now have 4 SS5 sports in spot and they by far surpass those lights. So much so that I angled the two on the outside out a bit to spread the light out more as they just shine that far. The 15° pattern gets quite tall when it's 1500 feet out so a 20° pattern spot would only waste that light even more. If they had a 10° pattern I probably would've went that route but honestly the 15° patten shines so far, it's ridiculous! So it's nice to get a bit more width than the 10° pattern I came from. Diode Dynamics is coming out with an SS5 Max laser that will utilize 6 osram HX Boost chips and 3 laser chips that is supposed to produce over 500,000 cd from one SS5. That will be one crazy light I think! The sports at 406,000 cd absolutely blow me away already but there are a lot of great options out there.

Wish you added rigid dually xl pro spot to the comparison. They are a 5" square with similar optics to the dd. Also, the reason for spot lights is long distance, so it would be alot more informative to take the light measurement at 200ish yards. I have the rigid dually xl pro spot on one vehicle, bd lp9 pros on another, 2 pairs of dd ssc2 pro spot on another, a bd 10" onx6 pro on one of my bikes, and a bd xl pro motorcycle headlight on another. In my opinion, the bd's seem to project light further. It may be an optical illusion, because they are a slightly warmer color which reflects less light off of airborne particulates, unfortunately all my lights arent in the same category so its hard to compare them apples to apples

I own the LP6s (combo lens) and DD SS3 fogs. My wife had DD SS3 spots and we just swapped them for the BD OnX6+ and got DD fogs. DD is better on road, BD is better off road. More light spill on the LP6 gives you better peripheral and around corners and the color temp is WAY easier on the eyes at night than DD. DD has a better cut-off, so you're not blinding oncoming cars (fogs), but put a slight curve in the road (with the spots) and your hotspot isn't where you want it. Also, DD Max fogs are too bright and you actually lose a little distance because of how your eyes adjust to the light. More isn't always better, so I swapped the Max for the Pro.
@SnowboundCustoms
@SnowboundCustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Good point! I’ve heard some arguments that more light spill in the foreground makes it harder to see farther down the road but I haven’t actually tested it. In regards to curves in the road, this was just a test of the most intense lights using a spot beam. One thing to note is that Baja designs only has a combo and spot pattern for the LP6. The combo just changes two of the spot LEDS into a flood. On the other hand, the SS5 has a “driving beam” pattern. It’s twice as wide as a spot beam which I find to put light in a much more useful area.

What about the LP9? Since the SS5 has 9 LEDs
@SnowboundCustoms
@SnowboundCustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I wouldn’t look at it as how many LEDs it has, but rather the power each LED is putting out. The diode dynamics SS5 uses 9 that are 10W each making 90W total while the LP6 uses 6 that are 15W each for 90W total. I chose the LP6 because it’s fairly similar in size to the SS5 but the LP6 is still a bit bigger by about 1.5”. The LP9 seemed like too large of a size difference but I do want to compare it in the future. Since the LP9 Pro is 105W compared to the LP6 Pro at 90W, I would expect a 16% brighter hotspot. This is still slightly less than the SS5 Pro at the hotspot but might have more overall total light output due to light spill.

Yes I know the LP9 exists. I believe I mentioned it in the video but I chose the LP6 because they are the closest competitors in the 5” pod size market and they are both 90 forward facing watts. I’ve never heard of the Livid Hyperdrive MK2 but it looks like that’s a 9” light pod delivering 80w from a quick search. I don’t view bigger as better. A light that can produce more power in a compact size is always a win in my book.

@@SnowboundCustoms the title of your video is "the BRIGHTEST light pods you can buy" and that's simply not true, I'm sick of all this blatantly false click bait on KZbin, it's just as bad as the Amazon sellers lying about their specs to get more sales
@SnowboundCustoms

@@MinimaDomum it’s really not a lie at all. That’s just how KZbin algorithms work and I’m playing the game given to me. There are plenty of lights brighter than the ones you mentioned as well. I could stick a 50kW stadium light on my my car, but it’s outside of the category in testing. Within the category I’m testing, I do believe these are the brightest unless you can show me another pod in this general size that performs better

@@SnowboundCustomsyou said "the brightest light pods you can buy" which is not true at all, if you put it into context and say "brightest under 7" then the Ultra Vision Nitro 80 Maxx is brighter, if you you say "brightest under 110w" then there are plenty of brighter ones, if you say "the brightest american made between 5" and 6.5" then you might be close lol

@@MinimaDomum i mean it does list the exact lights I used in the title. I’m also based in the USA and have never heard of those lights since those aren’t on our market. Again you listed a light that is much larger (7.1” compared to 5-6”) and lower on power being only 80watts. It would be a little silly if every video on KZbin had to put “American made” or “Australian made” disclaimers in every title. 90% of my audience watching from recommend is from the United States so I apologize if KZbin recommended my American made video to you

@@SnowboundCustoms are you opened to taking payments on it? I cant afford one but I’ve been trying to get one for my Harley Davidson Dyna I daily my bike and I have issues with people seeing me and cutting me off so I’m hoping that the LP6 would let me be seen to drivers.

Neither, morimoto big banger...and pretty sure diode dynamics, are only USA assembled... other way, still quality
@SnowboundCustoms

I don’t think so. It’s down on power being only 77W versus 90W. I also had a lot of issues with their selective comparisons. In their YT video, they compared the Big Banger Combo pattern to the SS5 combo pattern but it was clear that neither of these patterns were similar. To have a fair comparison they would’ve compared it to the SS5 driving beam pattern. I’ve also come to decide that light spill can be quite beneficial. The bajas have a lot of spill, the diodes has some spill, and morimoto has almost no spill in their new lights. The lack of light spill can cause really weird gradients that don’t work in the real world. Creating a tighter and tighter beam pattern is just a marketing technique so these companies can flex the highest intensity numbers but in reality it isn’t so useful. Since Bajas lights have a ton of spill, they are incredibly easy on the eyes in an off-road environment. Same with the SS5 Pros because of the larger emitter, but I wouldn’t get the SS5 sport because it lacks in light spill

@@PghMtbRides oh ya I saw that! SAE is where it’s really useful. The bajas are garbage in that department because of the spill so we’ll have to see if they improved with their new pod being released next month. I work at Diode, I literally make the whole stage series line up. We started in St. Louis and just moved into our new building right across the river in St. Charles Missouri. Last time I checked I wasn't chinese, or live in China. We even do facility tours if you ever find yourself in town, we have a full SMT line that populates our boards in house and everything.
