A review of Studio MAPPA’s final season part two for Attack on Titan. Watch, as I discuss the writing of the story, multiple character arcs and the production between Studio Wit and MAPPA. I’ll also offer commentary on controversial matters such as the division between Floch’s Yeagerists and Eren’s comrades, the Alliance. Enjoy the review and analysis!

Still can’t believe we actually got the Paths stretch of chapters fully animated to perfection in TV. Unmatched narrative & masterclass storylling that’s only once in a lifetime experience. We’ll see how Director Hayashi handles Part 3, and the ending animated.

I nearly cried watching it here, and I've watched it at least 20 times, not counting all of the reactions to these scenes that I've seen. And I NEVER cry, I'm not a sensitive or emotional person at all. I've no idea how he's done it, but combining this music, this story, this scene and this voice acting all into one works like some sort of hypnosis. I just have to cry, I have no choice. It's crazy. This scene shouldn't be just awarded it should be analyzed and studied for years, it's brilliant.

I got it, MAPPA really did a great job on Pt 2 (Pt 1 was to choppy). But i think it's ridiculous to say WIT would not do it better. Best season of anime ever. This story is so unbelievably good. I can't even remember another story where I can look at almost every single character and understand their motivations and actions. It is a shame that some people try to dumb it down into a simplistic "us vs them" view point when the writing blatantly shows it is all about perspective. As a manga reader I also really enjoyed the conclusion and can't wait to see that part adapted. Although I don't think it will come anywhere close to beating this season, with some great execution it can definitely be up in the top 3 or 4 parts (It won't beat this season or the RtS arc that is for certain though).

Shadis and Maggaths death are one of the most beautiful circles in aot i think. For the same reason Erwin had to fulfill his Circle in this story in the Charge against the Beast titan, these BOTH had to die. And they did in the most magnificient way possible. The author isayama once was asked on what Episode he had worked the most and he answered: Season3 EPisode11 ''Bystander''. Many people wondered bc its not even a cinematicly epic Episode its mostly story of Keith Shadis and his relationship to Grisha and Carla and how he wanted to be the ''Main Protagonist'' but had to accept that he's not capable of that and that he'd lead so many people into death caused him to give his work as the Scouts Chef to Erwin. Keith accepted his siderole and every scene he delivered that through something, like the moment he's gotten himself beaten up by the yaegerists. The more he saw Carla's son growing the more proud he was on the kids he trained, for being mature and not just strong. He felt regret(thats what he said in the episode he died) and felt proud that they connected to do something ''That leads the Elders out of the Forest''(sorry for that metaphor :-) hopefully you get it). He doesn't wantto see the outcome of all of that, and he didnt even wanted to get any attention(NOBODY has seen him entering the Boat even if he could've said something or leave a message) so he literally just suicide, helping his ''kids'' doing something to be proud of, and accepting his role as the ''Bystander''. And for Maggath: Season4 introduced a new cast, that mirrors the cast we got introduced to in Season1. Maggath is the same guy just on the opposite side. He's the one training Kids to kill for racism and nationalism. But seing Gabi, growing up through experiencing these relationships with Kaya and Sashas Family,literally raising herself that racism is wrong; and the other kids too that made all these ideas of not killing anymore...even Maggath found a fatherly role, and due to the absolut low chances of a positive outcome in that rumbling situation he decided to sacrifice himself, wearing the coat with the Wings of Freedom(that was originally the Flag of his Enemies if you think about it...); dying proud with the one, he could've drinken a beer with.... I love the fact that these Men are dying. It fills the term ''Bittersweet'' to perfection. And once again, proofs genius Storytelling through detailconnectivity off the Episodes. :D Happy to be here for Sidefacts c(:

My only real nitpick is I think Gabi's headshot should've been saved until right at the end of the episode. Just like it was in the manga. For the whole month, we were left with the feeling of, "Oh shit, did they really just kill Eren?!", and, "How will he Houdini his way out of this one?!" The scene definitely had impact, but I believe it would've had had more impact if we had to wait for the next episode to see what happens.

I really liked this video I disliked the ending of the manga. It was really bad. I thought this arc could have been better but I like how you took an unbiased view of the Yeagerists and Alliance too. I do think this arc was a weak one, particularly with Armin and other characters being regressed however the show is not unfixable to me like most of the doomers think. I still believe that an AoE would be the perfect ending to this series. The manga did not answer the questions and felt like a huge lie but why? Isayma wanted to betray us. Eren and Isayama have one final plot twist up their sleeve and it is AoE. Eren has seen the manga timeline.

Oh, another thing I completely disagree with and is complete BS is saying Mikasa has been developed she is by far the worst character in terms of writing on this show. I don't really get what Isayama was trying to prove with her other than she is a slave to Eren so proving Eren right. He could have done so much more with this character. I really started to hate her this season along with the hypocrite Armin. I don't think Isayama was thinking logically when writing these characters.

Dude! Talk about an underrated reviewer! You articulated my thoughts perfectly! Especially the "hot take'' about AOT's transition from WIT to MAPPA. I absolutely love WIT. They adapted AOT to perfection by lifting the bar so high. High to a point where the majority of studios cant reach to this day. They are also commendable. Turning over AOT and Vinland Saga to MAPPA because they felt they couldn't deliver a high quality adaptation in the allotted time.. They could have just taken the money, produced a mediocre season and ran but they respect the fans and the medium. Now they are killing it with shows like Ranking of Kings and Spy x Family that are less action packed but still great adaptions. MAPPA's style definitely suits the tone change of the later chapters but i sincerely hope they start treating their employees better. thanks for this great review. I liked and subscribed. What a video man. Sorry if my english is bad but its not my first language lol It's amazing to find someone with such a complete analysis and who clearly understands this wonderful work of art. I often feel that attack on titan is simplified to such an extent that people don't see beyond its wonderful sakuga. For me, it succeeds in telling a profound story that on the one hand tells us about human cruelty, violence, war, revenge and resentment, while on the other hand shows us the beauty within cruelty, the hope and courage that exists within the struggle to survive, friendship, love, memories, dreams and death itself. All of it while having some of the most epic and clever plot twists I've ever witnessed in fiction. Every character has something to say in this magnificent narrative that hooks you from the first episode and takes you on a journey full of mystery, sadness and happiness while making you question the very thing you feel. Great video, and I really appreciate the last point you brought up about the stupid "WIT VS MAPPA" discourse. It's funny because I remember YEARS ago back in 2019 dreading the idea of someone besides WIT Studio adapting it, but for many of the same reasons you brought up, it actually worked out better in the end that WIT and MAPPA swapped when they did. It's hilarious when I see comments on "The Rumbling arrives to Marley" scene that say "WIT would've done better" and I get confused as to what on earth they are picturing that would make it so. Do they think the Colossal Titans would've been 2D? Cause no matter which studio did it, there was 0% chance of that happening. Colossal Titan was only 2D in season 1 cause he only has two short scenes. Once he had to be involved in full-on battles in season 2 and 3, WIT had to switch to 3D. And MAPPA's 3D colossal titans are SIGNIFICANTLY better than WIT's 3D colossal Titan. In fact, The Rumbling alone is enough of a justification that I actually think it's better that MAPPA adapted this than WIT.

Yeah, I agree about MAPPA being a better fit for this season. Tetsuro Araki's direction is very over the top and it has a lot of energy to it which fit the first three seasons that felt larger than life whereas Hayashi's direction is more down to earth/realistic, traditional and sometimes experimental which fits this season because it's focused even more on human drama.

Mappa’s artstyle has always agreed with the tone of the war that is this final season. But artstyle is not animation- part 1 would have been up there with S3P2 and S4P2 if the Marley arc had even remotely-decent animation. Very impressed by the upgrade in animation in the 2nd part. I only wish the production committee gave MAPPA more time for part 1 (it should have aired in Spring 2021 earliest, an extra 3 months or so)

I was all for the rumbling until it actually started. They weren't pulling any punches on them evaporating and it made me physically sick to watch. My empathy (which had been completely drained by part 1 of season 4) came rushing back. At first, those were just enemies of Paradis and therefore my enemies so screw them. But actually watching what was happening to them made them people all over again. That said, I don't exactly blame Eren for going that route. It kinda reminded me of when Levi and Hange apologize to Floch about Erwin, saying he became a devi, lost his humanity, for them and therefore isn't entirely to blame. I'm not making Eren blameless nor am I saying genocide is the route of a hero, but I am saying that I myself couldn't come up with anything that got rid of their problems with the world in a way that wouldn't mean keeping them forever dependent on the titans so I can't really criticize his plan. Anyways, I loved this anime. Made me feel in a way that most shows of late have failed to.
@thinkmarkthink1314
@thinkmarkthink1314 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, but Eren becomes even more defensible when you realize that he only chose the rumbling because Hange and Armin also had no alternative solutions except for the 50 year plan which would require sacrificing Historia, and attempting to talk it out which is a joke of a plan (Isayama seems to think so too, Armin tried to talk to Daz and literally got his mouth shot off, indicating that talking would never work). The alliance then continues to go against Eren, even killing their own comrades, even though they still have no alternative solution. If they stop Eren, what happens then? How have they justified killing their comrades? The most likely scenario if they stop Eren is Paradis being exterminated.
@hinata1ize
@hinata1ize 2 жыл бұрын
@@thinkmarkthink1314 Oh 100%. I'm totally team Jaeger. A lot of the audience keeps calling him evil while giving no alternatives. I do understand why his friends tried to stop him though. They understood what he was doing and why, but how do you sleep at night when you know that billions of innocent people are being slaughtered? They're on the side of genocide being unjustifiable, and if you play the numbers game, killing the ppl on Paradis is the lesser evil bc it's less ppl dying. Of course, I don't play the numbers game. The rest of the world started it. Eren finished it. That's how I see it.

@thinkmarkthink1314 2 жыл бұрын
@@orion2544 I mean, what he does is certainly bad, but I think wether it is “right” or not is entirely relative, because Eren has no other options. It pretty much becomes the trolley problem. If your immediate family was going to be hit by a train, but there was one person you didn’t know on the other track, would you pull the lever? What if it was 20 people on the other track? What if we changed the scenario? What if there are a million people in a building (damn that would be a big building), and within those million, ten thousand want to kill your family, but you cannot separate the hostile from the innocent? Would you burn down the building to protect yourself and your family? Would you do nothing and let your family be killed? What answer is “right”? You seem to think it’s only about numbers, but it’s not. Intent matters, because self-defense is “right”. So the real question here is how far we can take the moral amnesty granted by self-defense. Can Eren destroy the world to protect paradis? No? What if he destroyed only Marley? would it be “right” then? If he killed only the world alliance military, that seems the most “right” option, but then historia and the rest of paradis would have to continue living caged by their need to preserve the founding titan. Would it be “right” for those Paradisians to have to shorten their lifespans to 13 years just to defend themselves from the rest of the world? Do they not have a right to live free of that burden? But then, the only way for them to free themselves would be destroying the world… How far does self-defense go? The inherent problem is that the world in general, that is, an unknown number of people outside of paradis, are oppressing and threatening paradis. Much like the large building analogy, there is no way to separate the innocent from the hostile. So the question is whether or not paradis has the right to eliminate their attacker. The problem is that destroying the world would have literally the highest collateral damage ever. So again, how much collateral damage is justifiable for someone to defend themselves? Maybe let’s get personal. A beam has fallen on your arm and you are stuck. There is a building above you that is falling towards you, and if you do nothing you will die. However, there’s a lever right next to you that will trigger an explosion and redirect the building to fall into another building. Are you justified in pulling the lever, saving yourself but killing hundreds of others? What if your closest family member was stuck, and you were at the lever? would you pull it then? To return to your original comment, do you think your own life or the life of your family member is more important than all those other people that would die if you pulled the lever? If you pulled it, would you be wrong? Maybe you would be a villain, like Light? Personally, I don’t think so. You have every right to pull the lever to save yourself and your family. I feel the same way about Eren. So maybe you understand my perspective a little more now. To your other point, compromise was not a possibility in attack on titan. Isayama wrote it that way, just like I wrote the above scenarios.
@orion2544
@orion2544 2 жыл бұрын
@@thinkmarkthink1314 there were other options but they required sacrifices from his side. As I wrote in my other comment, Zeke's plan would have accomplished the same thing but he was not willing to compromise. I also highly respect your critique of certain subsections of this fanbase. The whole “what could have been” notion and Wit versus Mappa debates were mind numbing and counterproductive. I appreciate that you highlighted those controversies and explained them with both and objective and subjective lens, which furthered the message of your essay. Among the countless controversies you could have covered within this community, I definitely think the aforementioned “studio wars” and the Jaegerist stans versus Alliance stans were probably the most poinent to cover, and you did that expertly. Amazing video! About the MAPPA thing, I've noticed they are far more creative with the direction of episodes. There have been quite a few episodes where the angle of the shots, or the way it was edited, helped elevate the emotions. A great example is Night of the End. But even smaller things like how Xavier's home and his wife's body showed up in the scene during Sole Salvation, or the way the shots of Grisha screaming in Memories of the Future cut between each other to show his desperation. I struggle to find examples of this kind of bold and creative direction in WiT's part of the series. That isn't to put them down or anything, they are excellent of course. But I do think that, while WiT's action is stronger, MAPPA's dialogue shines. Though I wonder if this difference is a product of the plot, considering Season 4 is a much more dialogue-heavy season. Either way, great video.

Excellent analysis. AoT is an allegory for the culture war as a whole. Reflected in those who identify with one faction or another, or those, like yourself, who see it objectively, who can understand all perspectives within the story, and yet see the tragedy that unfolds because of the clash of partisan perspectives. The expanse does a brilliant job of portraying this too. Hope you’ll do an analysis of this too.

@@zomebody5529 I don't subscribe to your thoughts. I still think AOT had more depth and concepts explored in less content. Every single part was just packed with so much. Naruto was too focused on cool fights and arcs that ended in the typical shounen way of friendship and understanding. Code Geass was too focused on trying to be smart and the 4D chess grand scheme concept. One Piece tbh feels weird to be included in this list but I digress. All the anime you mentioned felt like typical Shounen level exploration of human concepts. AOT felt like a Seinen, a story where you can see conflicts arising organically because each people or culture had different ideas and understanding of the world, different motivations and selfish thoughts, how history and politics work, complex social interactions, etc. TLDR; AOT concepts felt more grounded on realities and more in depth. The others are plagued by the fact that they have to "Shounen"-ize their content, except maybe Code Geass which was too focused on the 4D chess aspect, just a dude trying to outsmart everyone else compared to AOT's "Everybody is struggling at life and history is a result of all those people's individual struggles culminating in conflicts and conclusions for the majority". Probably a superficial AOT summary but yeah.

I myself am also stuck in this loop of thinking "what could have been"...of course I would have preferred for WIT to complete the series as I find their art and animation much more appealing to Mappa's but I can't help but wonder what Mappa could have done at "full power". Mappa is obviously one of the best studios in the industry right now but even they struggled with the extremely rushed and troubled production. Attack on Titan might actually be one of Mappa's lesser works which is of course impressive because the final season(s) so far turned out extremely well when keeping all the issues in mind. What I'm trying to say is that the studio change wouldn't even have been an issue if Mappa was able to actually go all out and show how great their stuff can look like. Just imagine AoT by Mappa with the same quality as Jujutsu Kaisen, another work of theirs which looked incredible and aired at the same time as AoT. I have to admit I was really upset with the downgrade in visual quality when Part 1 of the Final Season came out but I've learned to look past it and now I actually really like most of what Mappa has done. There's still individual episodes and scenes that have been done masterfully which I truly love. "Memories of the future" might actually be my favourite AoT episode ever and I'm extremely happy that Mappa nailed that whole sequence as it was already my favourite part in the manga. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with Mappa's AoT but I just can't shake the thought of how much better it could have been if only Mappa was given more time.

As far as the Jeagerist's vs the Alliance my biggest issue is that the Alliance basically molds into a team in one night over Soup & a few arguments. Also the notion of "Saving the World" feels a bit contrived since it's made clear to all the Paradis Alliance members for a long time now the World wants to wipe them & everyone they love off the map for good. It's like Jean was saying if we don't do the rumbling the World will wipe us out. Also Marley is basically conquering the World using Titan powers like the Eldians did in ancient times, while also running concentration camps. I sympathize more with the Jeagerist's and I see the Alliance's goals/union as a bit too contrived & improbable... just insert "Save the World" as the magic that makes the Alliance work.

Nice video touching on the biggest theme and message of the story. The cycle of violence and what perpetuating that cycle can lead to (Rumbling). The ability to see and understand both sides is the only way we can work toward ending the cycle, and that's what the Alliance represented. The Alliance was the contrast to the cruel world of their universe, but not much different from our world. Even though the Alliance also got caught up in some cyclical violence themselves with needing to confront the Yeagerists in order to accomplish their goal. This emphasizes the tragedy of it all. Now, I'm sure this video will trigger the ending haters. "It doesn't make sense, bro. What was the point of it all, bro? It was character assassination and plot holes, bruh".

The fact that we can understand them all and see where they're coming from to the point of siding with them completely and throwing out all other options as evil speaks volumes about how truly Masterful this story is. It's not that there is no right or wrong. But just like in the real world - there are no easy questions to the biggest issues. There's right and wrong in everything and everybody. I can’t fully agree with your point about the animation. Yes, I do believe MAPPA’s art style and cinematography are more fitting with the tone of the story moving forward, however you can’t argue that the animation in general is anywhere on par with what we were used to before season 4. The animations were choppier, the character designs, shading and line work were more basic. Everything was much more static and less lifelike than before and the use of cgi in place of very labor intensive 2d animations are very much less appealing. The sound design is also a bit of a downgrade, the titans don’t carry the same weight they once did, that can’t be excused because of a tonal shift. I understand that these things were out of MAPPA’s control, and they did a phenomenal job with what little time they had. However when I wonder what could have been, I imagine season 4 with all the visual complexities that season 1 had, and I can’t help but feel disappointed on how things turned out.
