Duke has some of the best level design ever put into a video game. I randomly decided to play episodes 1-3 the other day, after probably five years, and I did it all in one sitting, never once getting bored. As much as I love Doom, most of the levels start to feel samey after an hour or two. *GO INTO ROOM* *KILL DEMONS* *PICK UP KEYCARD* *REPEAT* Maybe it's just because I've played it a million times but I digress. Dukes gameplay loop is similar but it allows more interactivity with the world so every section feels different. Blowing up buildings, riding the trains, causing earthquakes, etc. I'm still upset we'll never get a proper sequel, Duke 3D deserves to be remembered just as much as Doom and Half Life

If you haven’t played Dusk you 100% should. I know everyone says it’s a spiritual successor to Doom, but the level design and secrets feel exactly like Duke Nukem if not better. It’s legitimately one of the best games I’ve played in the past decade. Pretty sure it’s cheap too so there’s not much risk involved in taking my word for it. I guarantee you won’t regret the purchase though.

Then don't play Wolfenstein3D, it's even more repetitive than Doom 🌚 But yeah, at least we have tons of mods for Duke so our hero will never get bored and so we either 🦜

as someone who just played doom his first time the other day, you're right. at first i was amazed at the faster paced hoarde action and sometimes scary parts, but duke is better str8 up

i think the fact octobrains die to one devastator rocket is actually one of the coolest design quirks in the game, one of those little details that give the games combat such a unique feeling. its a neat little fold to the game mechanically and encourages you to use that specific weapon against them and save rockets for other enemies. that being said i wouldn't be surprised if it was a coding mistake

Man, I have been playing this game regularly since 1996 and I didn't knew the laser tripbomb trick to slow down falls! Btw, steroids are quite useful too: they not only allow to run faster as you say, but doubles your jump distance (so you can reach new areas without jetpack or make it possible to access unacessible areas). It also returns Duke to normal size when shrunk, so you don't need to wait or risk getting squashed by enemies.

Maybe the pipe bomb not gibbing on stealth kills could be something they did to balance it for "Damn im good" since gibbing an enemy makes it so they cant respawn

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Dark Forces the first FPS to introduce jumping and crouching mehanic, along with the ability to look up and down? It was released a year before DN3D for sure, but I honestly don't recall there being any glaring improvements in those areas coming from 3D Realms.

If I recall it was Heretic that introduced being able to look up and down, that was developed by Raven Software on the Doom engine.

Thanks for reminding me how old I am, haha xD Also, the funny thing is I actually discovered that crouching, jumping, looking up and down was a thing purely because of Dark Forces -- that game really got me more invested than Heretic, but it did came out later than Raven's Software child nevertheless.

4:14 absolutely not, my man. both this and Doom's shotguns are programmed after real shotguns, meaning they have the same range and distance as a real shotgun, they're actually quite good at long ranges, it's just the spread that makes it seem like it's less effective at long range shots since sometimes enemies will dodge some pellets.
