Hello sailors, come onboard as we leave the south coast and round Lands End. We plan on crossing the Bristol Channel and sailing overnight to Milford Haven, but the wind has other ideas.
Our plan B was Lundy Island, but we needed a plan C. That's where Padstow came in. Can we make it before the tidal gate closes?

well done you on taking on the Bristol Channel, with a 12 metre tidal range and rips to match. Padstow looked like a nice bolthole. Just a thought....... your genoa foot looked bar taut and straight close hauled. I guess there can't be much wrong if you're making 7-8 knots, but try moving the sheet car forward by a foot or so, to put some curvature in the foot, creating a tauter leech. This should improve the aerofoil and lift generated by the sail. Keep an eye on the speed through the water and see where the optimum lies.

Brilliant, thank you Peter! An excellent observation! I guess this would also just reduce the tension in the rig a little, which is also a good thing. One of the things we appreciate with Reach Out is that she has a LOT of power running through her, much more than we're used to on the boats we've sailed previously. So we're still getting to grips with how best to handle her. You'd have had a right laugh at us the first few sails we went out into the channel. Admittedly we had a few days of stiff twenty odd knot winds, but we were completely exhausted getting the sails up back then. We've since learned a lot about doing things easier and not relying on brute force, so these tips you offer help us even more!

Brilliant the Bristol channel is the worst place in the world to sail I live in mumbles swansea and have swum sailed and surfed all my life in it can't do anything against the tide and the weather forecast don't apply cos the bbc don't have any understanding of tidle effects

Much respect for the Bristol Channel. Wind over tide there is not a good place to be! Unfortunately it meant we couldn’t get up to Penarth and the like, but we look forward to having another go sometime 😊

Thank you Steve! We had plans to make it up to Penarth but alas the weather wasn't having it! The lack of anchorages on the north Cornish coast, prevailing north westerlies and a spring tide coming out of the channel meant that it would've been a hard slog up to Penarth! And because we had waited 10 days in Falmouth for a weather window that turned out to be a mirage, we had to truck northwards directly to Milford Haven! It was a long and lovely passage - hope you can check it out in our next video!
