29:45 The LNER A4 is "Dominion of Canada" and the Terrier's name is "Foxtrot". They are static displays at Exporail, the biggest locomotive museum in Canada, which is located in the town of Saint-Constant, Québec. I've seen them myself and they are very well preserved. Honestly hope that Hyce comes to see it one day, they have a model layout and their own little cinema showing a movie about the canadian railway history. They also bring out a replica of the John Molson steam engine for Halloween and Christmas and give rides to people.

One fun instance of American locomtoives in Britain i know about is when the Midland purchased some 2-6-0 Moguls from the Schenectedy Works known as the 2511 Class and some 2-6-0 Moguls from Baldwin known as 2501 Class in 1899 and were nicknamed "Yankees." Baldwin had no consideration for British practices while Schenectedy tried to accomadate. They were not successful and all were withdrawn by 1915 and scrapped
@Voucher76525 күн бұрын
Yup and they were actually modified to fit the British loading guage and later on with the Baldwin Pershing class 2-8-0s and S160s during World Wars 1 & 2

The Great Central Railway, and the Great Northern Railway also ordered Moguls from Baldwin, known as the 15 class and H1 class respectively.

the 2-6-0s from the US were because of a manufacturing strike, the works of the railways couldnt keep up with builds and repairs so had to turn to Baldwin, the same reason is how the Lynton Barnstaple got their 2-4-2

You can’t forget the best American loco in Britian; an off-the-shelf SW(insert number) from GE/EMD (sorry, not too knowledgeable about them) But anyways, the gravel company Foster Yeoman needed a heavy powerful Shunter that just didn’t exist in britian, so they bought a regular SW. way out of the loading gauge. And one day, it ran away, and got italicized by a tunnel There’s some pictures online, and I don’t believe anyone way hurt. But it’s a funny story

Reminds me a little of the Brookfield at my work, she was meant to be built for Eastern Europe narrow gauge with all their needs and quirks but just before completion she was commandeered for British army service, finished as a standard gauge and just let loose with all the weirdness still bolted onto her, she’s having some teething troubles related to some devoured rags in the cylinders but she ran 3 times last Sunday and even performed a funeral before getting stuck in both forward and reverse despite the reversers commands. As much as I love steam I do not envy the steam work crew and I’m happy I only have to deal with the diesels for now
@lechking94124 күн бұрын
XD now thats funny on the monched rags. also how DOES a reverser breack like that. i got ot know because it sounds stupid painful to deal with.
@Agsotro24 күн бұрын
@ basically as it was explained to me, the pressure on the regulator had equalized and that somehow caused steam to vent the wrong way round the circuit and lock the cylinders in place, like the cylinder is exactly halfway between TDC and BDC and received an equal amount of steam. I’m not a steam guy so this is wildly paraphrased

I will vouch for Terriers being some of the cutest little engines. Definitely my favorite of the standard gauge little engines - if you asked me as a child to draw a train, it wasn't Thomas I'd have drawn, but a Terrier. They're just such a dainty, heart-achingly pretty little loco. I think my love for Terriers comes from my father's love for them - he grew up when they still ran them, in his neck of the woods (though they were being rapidly phased out, and pushed out to operating only on the weight restricted lines). As of my last inquiry, my father has 60-odd of them in OO. At one point he had all of them out on his as yet uncompleted model railway, which was what prompted the question. A fun bit of trivia on the Terriers - the ochre color they were originally painted was a bit of a sleight of hand by William Stroudley, who had called it "Improved Engine Green" in order to pull the wool over the eyes of the LB&SCR - and personally, if you ask me, good call, Stroudley, that color is definitely perfect for them. I've seen them in other colors in preservation, and to be quite honest, in my opinion, Improved Engine Green complements them best. Fun sidenote - one of my favorite memories from my childhood of my father's model railway is when a family friend brought his Big Boy to play on my dad's layout. They did a brief operations session in which Terriers shuffled wagons around the freight yard, and constructed a consist for Big Boy while Big Boy took on fuel and water outside the engine shed. We didn't have a turntable large enough for Big Boy, and the run-around head-shunt in the freight yard was too short to accomodate anything much bigger than a Terrier, so Big Boy had to reverse into the freight yard for the operations. Little did I know that I eventually would end up watching your channel, where Big Boy has been discussed at length, and where Terriers got a delightful mention. I love how the hobby comes full circle like that.

Here in the states we also have an Irish 3 foot gauge 4-4-0 tank engine, built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1887. Cavan and Leitrim Railway #3, the Lady Edith and some associated Irish rolling stock reside at the Pine Creek Railroad. It'll probably never run in the states a again because *COPPER FIREBOX* but they've been trying to get it back over to West Clare for a while now. Last I heard, they just lost contact at some point, seemingly no real reason or rhyme. Hopefully that changes.
@theaccountofmine.877925 күн бұрын
Even though 5T ended up being repatriated, I’d say Lady Edith got the better end of the stick. At least she’s safe and undercover, while 5T is in a sort of legal limbo that the local council can’t be bothered to sort out. Being partially dismantled doesn’t help either, I doubt that nothing has gone missing since she was basically abandoned in the shed.

However, unlike the engines made before, they could also do other duties, such as heavy freight, and even express passenger duties. Unfortunately, when BR found out how fast they might actually be going doing these duties, they put a stop to them so as not to cause too much wear and tear on the engines. Regarding the Brecon Mountain Railway, their ex-South African Baldwin pacific is the former Eastern Province Portland Cement Company shunter and transfer loco. It was used to transfer loads of limestone from the plant at Loerie in the Avontuur Valley to the South African Railways' interchange sidings there, and bring empty gondolas back in for loading. The loco itself was built to more or less the same specifications as the South African Railways' NG10. Subsequently retired and replaced by a near-identical locomotive built by Avonside. And replaced in turn by a diesel-mechanical shunter before its ultimate closure. Having run the sole surviving NG10 in South Africa in 2019, immediately after its restoration, I can confirm that those little Baldwin pacifics run quite sweetly and steam very well. Once the regulator packing has stopped trying to fricaseé the driver's hands of course...

Those little 2 foot gauge Baldwin engines you were talking about were brought over to Europe by the US Army in world war one. usually running supply trains to the allied trenches during the war. Those who went over seas usually stayed there, and were given other lives to various railways in Europe. as far as I know, one unit is still in the US in operation, however; it was deemed surplus, and was never deployed during its US army life.

For the Tender version having buffers and a knuckle, the “Flying Scotsman” from 1969-1973, LMS Coronation Class (LMS 6229 “Dutchess of Hamilton” disguised as 6220 Coronation) in 1939 for the World’s Fair and LMS 6152 “The King’s Dragoon Guardsman” (or so is the common belief) running as 6100 “Royal Scot” in 1933 had buffers and a knuckle when in the US for either the World’s fair or Columbian Expo. The Welsh Highland Railway also has a Baldwin 10-12-D 4-6-0 Pannier Tank engine sent over during WWI. GWR 6000 King George V was here in the USA in 1927 for the B&O Centenary. And the regions of BR were the Western (former GWR), Southern (should be obvious), Midland (former LMS from London to the Scottish Border), Eastern (LNER London-York), North Eastern (LNER York-Scottish Border) and Scottish (all LMS and LNER lines in Scotland).
