The Sea Harrier served in the Falklands War and the Balkans conflicts; on all occasions it mainly operated from aircraft carriers positioned within the conflict zone. The British Royal Navy Sea Harrier is one of the best fighter planes of all time. The first generation of the Harrier Jump Jets was the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, which made her maiden flight in December 1967 and entered service in April 1969, thus revolutionizing the concept of vertical short takeoff and landing capabilities for fixed-wing attack aircraft. The introduction of the British Aerospace Sea Harrier variant, informally known to its crews as the Shar, in particular took place in 1979, and not a moment too soon as the Falklands War broke out a mere three years later.

A reminder of the creative genius of the British aero industry before it was politically destined to be subservient to financial constraints that saw US replacements become paramount.

I still believe that if we still had it we could bring it up to date, and we could upgrade the engine if we tried.

It was fully modernised just before it was retired. It was retired at the peak of it's capability.

Without this Jet, the British would not have been able to liberate the Falkland Islands from Argentine aggression. So the existence of this Jet literally was the difference between victory and defeat in 1982. That alone makes it one of the most significant military jets of all time.

If the mod hadn't cancelled the 3 big aircraft carriers in Kate 1960s the Falklands wouldn't have happened these carriers would operate phantoms and bucks plus early warning planes 😊.

@@thecurlew7403 This is explained by a British Sea Harrier pilot on the Fighter Pilot Podcast, episode 140 - The Falkland Islands Air War, from 9:45 to 11:25. The South Atlantic waters were too rough for the Phantom.

Complete BS. The payload of the Harrier/SHAR and even the new and improved McDonnell Douglas Harrier II pales in comparison to that of the F-35B.

Very good assessment. Right up there with THE BEST AEROPLANES EVER! Yes it does look like a Shark. Those videos of it launching off the Carrier Ski Deck are Superbe.

Not all, the UK retained a few. 72 Harrier IIs were sold for $180,000,000 all of which were stripped for parts and never flew again.

To be honest, the Sea Harrier had no real reason to exist. A carrier based aircraft should always have a usable base of operations: the aircraft carrier. The Harrier was developed on the basis that the first target for a Soviet attack would be the military air bases. It was intended to be able to operate from any carpark or stretch of road. In a limited exchange, it would have provided definite air superiority over Europe, being the only jet aircraft still able to operate.
