Still a pretty impressive game, considering it was made by a group of people who were straight out of school and had no idea what they were doing (and if I recall correctly, part of it was made while they were still IN school, though I might be wrong on that). It also has Axl’s coolest neutral pose, so there’s that too, I guess.

The first game in the majority of series tends to be rather rough, so _Missing Link_ being a kusoge is hardly surprising. Let us just be thankful it actually got to develop into something great unlike so many other games that have crappy starts that thus led to immediate dead ends. [Insert footage of _Balan Wonderworld_ here as one of the most recent, very public examples.] If anything, then this video reminded me that I actually find how disgustingly poorly TACs were implemented in _MvC3_ even more of an issue than X-Factor, which is saying a lot given how obnoxious both systems were/are. To this day I still don't understand why they seemed to ripoff something from _Tatsunoko vs. Capcom_ without *also* porting over the counterplay to it, instead replacing it with a nigh-impossible guessing game. It's so dumb and, unlike this game, from a game that doesn't have the excuse of being the first, rough game in an eventual series.
@CrossfacePanda
@CrossfacePanda 3 жыл бұрын
When you consider that MvC3 was made by the same people who did Bloody Roar & Castlevania Judgement, it actually does make some sense why a lot of its system mechanics are janky and poorly implemented. They might have experience, but it’s not exactly experience as being stellar fighting game designers.
@MusicoftheDamned
@MusicoftheDamned 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrossfacePanda Huh. Noted. I have never played _Castlevania Judgment_ (or _Tatsunoko vs. Capcom_ for the record), but I have also never heard anything good about _Judgment_ either. I have played _Bloody Roar_ though, and while it's been many years, I don't remember that game being that bad despite its issues. Maybe it got far worse past the second game since I think I only played the first two. Shrug. (All I know is that it's basically definitely dead like every other property the current husk of Konami unfortunately has in its clutches. A moment of silence please.) The most annoying thing to me is that we'll never know if Capcom would fixed this seemingly glaring issue, like they at least tried to do with X-Factor, in that mythical updated version Yipes apparently implied would have existed if not for Disney's greed. It would have been nice to fix TACs and probably *literally* the worst throw-break system I have ever seen among a few other things, but instead we got _MvC: Infinite_ dumped on us by Overlord Disney before they killed *that* too in barely over year. Sigh. Oh well.
@CrossfacePanda
@CrossfacePanda 3 жыл бұрын
@The Damned Bloody Roar to me was always an extremely clumsy, not all that well thought out series of games with an extremely cool concept behind it. Still casual fun, but lacking in polish and depth compared to Capcom, SNK & Namco’s offerings from the same time period. Imo, it’s Japan’s version of Mortal Kombat: not exactly ”bad” games, but janky feeling, with a gameplay design that seems to lack in-depth understanding of what makes fighting games good (specifically thinking of old MK games, though I’d say the ”jank feel” still applies to modern MK).
@MusicoftheDamned
@MusicoftheDamned 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrossfacePanda Hmm...I see. That's definitely a fair assessment from what I remember of the games outside of them being *far* more fun to play by one's self compared to the _Mortal Kombat_ games with its telepathic, cheating A.I. at times. It does fit with _Bloody Roar_ arguably being one of those "XTREME!" 1990s game series even though it wasn't as bloody, much less as gory, as _Mortal Kombat_ was/is. I guess that makes it the fighting game equivalent of _Twisted Metal_ then: a fun but overall clumsily executed series of a good concept that spawned several games but still never really went anywhere and just eventually vanished. It's a great shame that the _Bloody Roar_ series will never get any chance for more polish with the current Konami situation and whatever has been going with that company for the past decade or so. At least with the greedy House of Mouse, we'll likely get another _MvC_ game eventually--though its quality I would worry for--once they finally drag The X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the other Marvel properties kicking and screaming into the MCU to maximize profit (and pseudo-monopolies). Meanwhile _Bloody Roar_ is currently just stuck being wasted potential or at least doomed to gather dust in current Konami's vault even for the people who thought those games were good mechanically on top of enjoying them.

I'm of the mind that infinites are just bad, period. They turn a two player fighting game into a single player combo exhibition where the other guy is just sitting around waiting for his turn. That said, I played the first guilty gear back in its own day and I loved it. I also didn't know how to do any infinites or the taunt cancel and in retrospect, I'm really glad the internet was still kind of in its infancy so my friends and I couldn't look up those techniques, because we had COUNTLESS hours of intense matches that probably looked a lot more like Daisuke intended anyway.

@Awawawa CM Exactly. Not only does it cease to be a game for the player getting trapped, it gets pretty dull for the spectators too. Once you know how the round is going to go and exactly how the rest of the combo is going to look, the hype is gone.

As a brief correction for the instant kill portion, the victim needs to input quarter back + attack button to cancel it. The meterless, unblockable P+K startup method isn't even the intrusive portion to this mechanic. Instant kills can also be activated by instant blocking certain grounded normals. You can instant kill to counter any S poke, if the opponent doesn't option select 214. If it wasn't for the instant kill stuff, it's a pretty fun kusoge. The timescam BS is dumb, but friends can agree not to do it. Meanwhile, the speed and sheer bustedness of your options are fun to see just how far you can break the game.

It's so hard to say this given the bad connotation the sentiment carries, but Strive feels very strike/throw oriented. The movement is still relatively quick, everyone's got the general standard normals, but these changes feel like they want to emphasize the risk/reward factor that comes from pressing specific buttons. This is similar to how you use specific buttons in SF, but with a little GG spice in that there are limited chains, a universal overhead that's pretty quick uncharged and leads into stuff metered (why did SF get rid of UOH? :( ), a pretty refined RC system, interesting defensive mechanics, and Daisuke playing the guitar. It's a different, interesting experiment that will take a lot of tweaking to get to its best form (Daisuke and Katano have admitted as much in interviews), but hell it's releasing in a better state than SFV did, so I'm down for the ride.

I think Strive is great, but as a long time Street Fighter player and relatively new Guilty Gear fan, I like to say that Strive is just Street Fighter with Roman Cancels, which funnily enough kind of is a thing in SF4 thanks to FADCs. To be fair, I haven't actually played Strive, my computer isn't strong enough to run it and I decided to buy Plus R instead of Xrd because it was cheaper and had all the characters from Missing Link which was the only game I had played at that point. But I have seen gameplay from Strive and it really looks like a very footsies based game that happens to have some stuff unique to Guilty Gear, while Xrd and Plus R seem like very neutral heavy games that reward aggresive yet thoughtful play.

I'm going to be real, I love Strive. It's got depth but it's also builds you up from easier combos to harder ones while still rewarding you in games. Losing feels fun. I bounced off xrd despite loving it because the execution barrier was so high. Gotta disagree with your initial assessment of it. With that said I feel like we gotta remember the original game was designed in and era of arcades and bars so it was intended for 2 kids or 2 drunk adults to pick up and play even though it came out on the ps4.

Im actually curious to see what my mans thinks of BlazBlue, given that its kinda the little brother of Guilty Gear in ALOT of ways.... Throw BBTAG in there too, why not? Even though its radically different from both normal BlazBlue and Guilty Gear (Guilty Gear arguably less so given the Burst buttons and how your IK works aint too far from GGs version)

at the expense of outing myself as The Guy Who Labbed Guilty Gear: The Missing Link, I want to point out a couple things: - any infinite involving repeated OTG knockdowns (like Sol 66K or VV) isn’t real, because there are actually wake-up techs in this game! The input is just... 8+any three buttons. Look I didn’t say it was going to make sense - the “taunt cancel” is actually a charge cancel, with the charge mechanic being a special move that powers up one of your special moves. it is never used for this purpose because it is essentially an empty special move with instant startup and no recovery and thus infinites, but there you go

@Awawawa CM See, that’s the thing: whenever someone compliments street fighter 2, they don’t talk about the mechanics they like or how fun it is to play, their compliments are limited to “it’s the first true fighting game” or “it created the genre”. It might have been a bit fun when it came out, but we can’t judge a game for how fun it was considered 30 years ago, and for a lot of people, it’s a horrifically boring experience with very little depth that a lot of people hate for those same reasons. It’s the game that invented the genre, and should be respected for it, and I do agree it shouldn’t be judged as if it were made today, but… If it came out today, exactly as it is, would you actually consider it remotely good? Would any of your comments make the slightest amount of sense? It invented the genre, but how is that an actual benefit the game has? How does that make it remotely good? If you have reasons to like it, good for you! I’d be interested in you telling me why you like it, I’ve never really seen the fun in it, but maybe there’s something I’m missing, or maybe you just… like playing it. I have no problem with that. But don’t just say “it’s the first” and pretend that adds something to this nothing game. It created the genre and should be remembered and as such, it should be respected as a product of its time, but having the historical context it has and having been considered fun thirty years ago because better games didn’t exist should not be used to say it’s good.

Hokuto no Ken is a kusoge but man god does it still look great visually and still very fun as an NBA Jam spinoff. The backgrounds in particular are really sick. Not to say Strive's backgrounds aren't graphically nice but man I wish they had much more interesting ones like in past games or BlazBlue. Like you had like stages like Kokonoe's lab or just straight up Blood Hell in Guilty Gear AC+R. I don't give enough of a shit about dynamic shadows in exchange for these well thoughts stages that sometimes had interesting stories going on in them.

Favorite memory I had with this game was bringing my Switch to a gathering at a friends and playing a few rounds with friends and goofing off. One of my favorite Missing Link fun fact: Axl had a rush-in multi-hit super that people would fall out of. Not when you connect with it at an odd angle. Not if they were in the air. Just always. You connect with the super like intended and you know the opponent would fall out of the attack sequence could just start blocking halfway through.

There is one significant angle of GG: The Missing Link that this video didn't cover, and that's defensive play. If you were to actually pick this game up and want to play it on [online netcode solution of your choice], you need to learn how to deal with another infinite-tossing chucklehead breathing down your neck. This is a part of kusoge that isn't often discussed, and I think it's where some of the fun in it comes from. You need to seriously lab counterplay and movement tech in these games to deal with the ToD that's always pixels away. Because Guilty Gear is the airdasher codifier (not the inventor, see Leon's Darkstalkers video), it actually provides a fair number of options for players to get out of situations that would just friggin' kill them, full stop. These could come from stray hits, or they could be what the Marvel Vs. Capcom and NRS circles call "hard-to-blockables". The way you beat those is by training every fiber of your being (via playing the smartest or the dumbest neutral) to avoid them. And you can definitely do that with an airdash and a traveling special! Hope everyone enjoyed this alternate perspective. Kusoge games can be really cool if you come at them with the right mindset. Learning how to deal with another player's garbage adds a whole other layer to these games, and they already tend to be a lab monster's dream. It's not like a big part of modern Guilty Gear isn't complaining about every character you don't main, anyways. Great video Leon, see you next duel.

I got into this franchise after picking up that one steam bundle that had all of the games available on Steam (including GG1 and Overture), and for story purposes, I decided to start by completing GG1's Arcade Mode with all 10 non-unlockable characters, *and* unlocking all of the characters. In order to fight Baiken (the prerequisite for unlocking her), you need to complete Arcade Mode as Sol or Ky, _without continues_. In a game with GG1's Instant Kills, and CPUs eager to abuse them. And I didn't know about Charge Cancelling, _or_ _any_ of the infinites (though I *could* tell that Sol's 66k was way too good). Unrelatedly, "Taunt Cancelling" as a name might be a bit misleading. There are two taunt buttons, Taunt and Respect, and every character has one special move where, if you substitute the attack button for Respect, you enter a charging animation and empower your next use of that special, up to Level 3. Technically, it's this charging ability that you're cancelling into and out of, not the respect animation (hence the need to perform a special motion each time). This mechanic was removed in all subsequent games (being replaced by Roman Cancels and Ky's 236H being named Charged Stun Edge), but it's directly referenced by Holy Order Sol (from the GGXX Series), who can Charge to increase the power of his specials, and who can cancel any normal attack into Charge (though in this case, Charging has 13f startup that cannot itself be cancelled without RC).

Just to pick a random example out of a hat, it’s never going to stop being funny seeing the fake outrage over Skullgirls making some small changes to artwork and also replacing Mike Z’s Russian voiceover (with the goddamn voice of Heavy TF2). “Wah there’s censorship in this game” my motherfucker in Christ this isn’t even vaguely the worst thing that’s happened to this game, not in the past couple years, not in the past decade. This is the third time we’ve switched developers now. The whole fucking game had to be delisted and renamed with Second Encore attached to it. This was a vaguely modern fighting game, and it ran into the same budget limitations as old ass fighting games to produce two whole characters of reused assets. There is so much that should have killed our game stone dead, and it never happened. Also we already changed Filia’s ass before. Also also you can find art of Filia’s ass whenever you want bro
