The famous Cobb Salad was not the beginning of this famous dressing, nor was it just one lettuce. Here is the story and the dressing that existed at this famous restaurant before the famous salad!

Good morning Jill. Fascinating stories. I love learning about these little food history tidbits. That dressing looks and sounds interesting . I love that you used chicory and watercress ... (or the brown derby did Lol). Simple recipes like this make me super happy because it leaves no excuse to not try them... and to taste some history 🙂 left you a like as always ❤️. Have a lovely weekend my friend. See you next time!

Hi Dajana! No problem! This is what my entire channel is about. Every single video I give stories behind the dishes. It's so wonderful to hear a chef appreciate that! Sometimes I change it up like this one, and do long-lost restaurant tribute. In others, I talked about little-known food fads. Whatever Direction the episode takes, you will always get a story with every day! Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it! You make it all worthwhile! 🍸❤️

Brava. Jill! In the late 60's through to the mid-eighties we lived almost across the street from "The Brown Derby" at the Safari Resort in Scottsdale (until it was no more, and I can't remember when, exactly). God love you for all of these memories! I'm still working my way through the archives and I won't quit. Have a joyous weekend and I'll be back in touch soon...

Jill wow the Brown Derby I must’ve gone past that restaurant on vine in Hollywood and never even knew it was there. Love that you’re sticking with the original with the water and love the use of the mason jar. Love that it was their house dressing and they have the combination of oils mostly the vegetable oil with a little olive oil probably because olive oil was expensive. Very unique lettuce blend I love it specially the use of watercress. Just love your giant spoon and fork awesome show today

Thanks so much Jeff!! Yeah, it's hard to tell these days but I am so happy that part of the history is there. Most people think everything about the Cobb salad was created on the fly that night so I had to set the record straight. Bob Cobb just added yummy things to their already existing salad!!! Have a great weekend!! 💖🍸

Great dressing! Very interesting that the restaurant was shaped like a hat. That dressing sounds very delicious. I think that by using both red wine vinegar and lemon juice, the combination of acids would make it very delicious. The combination of 4 greens would be delicious, I am sure. Can you believe that I have never knowingly had watercress? I need to give it a try. I am sure that salad would go great with a steak or roast. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm SO trying this recipe. Store bought dressings tend to be too sweet. Call me a fussbudget, but I don't like sweet salad. BTW: you ever tried putting the salad and dressing in a canning jar, shaking it up to distribute the dressing (like McD's did back in the day)? It's my favorite way to do individual servings; so much tidier and easier (and more efficient!) than the usual way.

Hi June!! I am so happy you are going to try it! It's so classic and I just love it! I've been making my own dressing for years for that same reason, and the chemicals they add. :/ The mason jar is such a great way to serve salad. I've done it in the past but its been awhile. I definitely remember McD's doing it. I guess they stopped because people don't go there for healthy food, LOL!!! Have a great weekend!!!! 💖🍸

YesterKitchen: It was as good as I hoped. I’m making it again this weekend and I’m’na try it on pasta salad. I also make feta cheese, so I’m going to marinate the feta in the dressing. I think it will make some really good Christmas presents this year.
@EastSider48215
@EastSider48215 4 жыл бұрын
YesterKitchen: Just an update - I have made this so many times in the past weeks that I have run out of red wine vinegar, so the next batch will have to be either balsamic or white wine. Also, one of the most popular uses has been to marinate feta cheese. I make feta cheese (way more than I can possibly eat), and marinated feta is something that everyone loves to get. So I tried it with the Brown Derby dressing and it has been a big hit, especially since once you eat the feta cheese, you have a really great salad dressing left over. Thanks!

You need to make the REAL GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE MOM MADE, AND HER COKE ACOLA CAKE WITH COKACOLA ICING YUM! OR A CHOCHOLATE CAKE WITH 7- MINUTE ICING,. PINALPPLE DREAM CAKE, OH THE MEMORIES ,THIS IS GRANDMA NOT GEORGE. Seven layered salad,. Heavenly rice. i may look up some of these receipts! There's a seven up salad I. remember,. Do you have the Watergate dessert? Made with pistachio pudding and whipped cream and PINALPPLE. The lemon or lime jello with canned pineapple,and cottage cheese! Mom used to make one with cherry or strawberry jello,with Minny marshmallows and walnut and mixed fruit cockteail ,the jellos where all the big deal at meal time or for church dinners. Have you ever made Ritz's Mock apple pie made with crackers? Boone knows it's made with cra meds,it's so fun! And that crazy coconut pie that makes its own crust, I believe it is called IMPOSSIBLE PIE! This all brings back. Memories,I was born in 1946, I was a young girl in the fifty's and SIXTY'S,my mother loved to cook all of the newfangled stuff on the backs of boxes and cans. My mother passed away when I was eighteen,right after I graduated from High School ,she was only fourtynine! I'm not sure what happened to all of her receipts,my dad went a little early I'm not sure what happened to her things! Now I'm getting sad, was happy. I'll quit for the night! Good luck with your fifty's site, I'll try to find some of those oldies but goodies, GOODIES! I have made some of them,she used to make a dessert with vanilla wafers and green or sometimes red jello,it had to be whipped cream bet into the jello,you lined your nine by eleven pan with the Waffers , they had to be Nilla Watters,no other, we always loved this it was very special to us kids. I'm not sure what it was called, but I bet it was on a jello box or the Nilla Waffers box. My sister is telling me she thinks it had carnation milk in it not whipp cream! I tried to look it up couldn't find it! And it was so good to, kind of a creamy jello!😱

While I like the dressing recipe. The Salad itself is sad. It's not whole leaf salad. It's chopped fine and composed. one of the back stories is that ""cobb" wanted a chopped salad because of recent dental work. anyways...the salad should be chopped very fine and put in rows "Cobbs" (which is another point of contention for the naming....). However the proper salad has no leave that's larger than a dime as it's been chopped up and composed in rows. Good dressing tho.

Hi Sam! Welcome! Thanks for all the 411! I made it a point to say this was not about the cobb salad. Rather, the dressing and the lettuce combination for their full leaf, lol, mixed green salad, which happens to be the same lettuce combination as the Cobb. 😊 But I always love to hear from everyone and I'm sure many don't know the "behind the scenes"! Thanks so much for contributing! I hope you have fun exploring history through food here! Have a wonderful day! 🍸❤️
