Amazing how today we have solid answers for why many of the behaviors exhibited by these female prisoners existed. Behavior was so poorly understood in those times, and everything seemed to be attributed to a lack of "goodness" while never taking into account just how horrific and difficult these women's lives outside the prison were. Many *DID* have to steal to survive,, yet rather than look at the overall social/societal issue their thefts were attributed to kleptomania 🤦♀️

I cant imagine being in prison with PMS and no midol..id be cranky too..this might be to much info but i attended all girl school and when living with ladies long enough our cycles become synced..can you imagine

You're absolutely correct, yet in those days things like this were never taken into account. Heck, PMS wasn't even a known diagnosis yet!

@@ABeautfulMess yes, that was first investigated by the respected Nature scientific publication in the ‘70’s with nurses in a Nurses Home in America and consequently has became a scientific, yet still unfathomable truth. Extremely interesting demonstrates how much more will be discovered regarding the admixture of minds and bodies in decades to come.

They had something better than midol actually. They had opium for pain. Alot stronger.

19:03 This is a cruel form of torture. Human beings are social creatures and isolation will eventually break even the strongest of minds down. They don’t care what the consequences of escaping are. They need hope and once they get the idea that escaping will relieve them of their current miserable situation they will grasp on to that hope regardless of all else. Even a change for the worst is still something different. If you put human beings is a hopeless situation it will eventually lead to suicide. They may try other things first, such as not cooperating or lashing out, sometimes violently but once that fails and a person is left with hopelessness….then death becomes the only relief to end their suffering. How strange, people become more sensitive and desperate about their current miserable existence at Christmas time! Gee!, I CAN’T IMAGINE WHY! This is sadistic, psychological torture, in my opinion is worse and does more permanent damage than any physical torture can.

Oddly, most of the social offences listed are just a lack of education, situation or money. cause meet effect.

Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel sir . I honestly I love the content of your channel it’s very informative. I learned from last videos about Elizabeth fry is British Quaker , philanthropist. She was one of chief promoters of prison reform in Europe. She also helped to improve British hospital system and treatment of insane people. Her notable works as she believed prisoners must be treated with kindness, taught female prisoners skills ad reading and sewing so they , could earn money to buy food . She gave babies in prison warm clothes, brought clean bedding for sick people. She also set up places for homeless people. The facts about victorian prisons in general they tended to be damp , unhealthy, insanity, overcrowded. All kinds of prisoners were mixed together ad at cold bath fields , men , women , kids , insane , serious criminals, petty criminals awaiting for trial , debtors . Each prison run by gaoler in his own way , he made up rules . There are slient prisons system intimate we’re forced to do boring repetitive tasks such as passing heavy cannon ball in complete silence. They were slept on hard beds , ate basic food like bread and water. By the end of 19 th century, neither separate or silent system were working.

Ah yes another FF program with the gent with the great Radio voice..this sounds like a old BBC radio program or in my case here in the states an old NBC/CBS or RKO program and wow the old women's penn..alot of these remind me of some of my kin..most of my kin would have been the sort that went in for stealing bread but never came back but it's crazy how some of the " crimes" are something as simple as stealing food or shawls and boots..crazy some of the stuff these gals could be incarcerated for

So funny to hear a privileged Victorian male talk about women through the lens of the religion they were taught and the societal norms of their day/class. They were no worse than the men - they were just held to a much higher standard in a time that gave them few ( if any ) choices in life.

its interesting how victorian prisons werent institution of reform as said in the video and yet they clearly were. maybe not in helpful ways, but sending the women off with a bible and prayer book and slacking on inhumane rules because those little kindnesses produced better results were certainly the beginning of reformative sentencing
