I’ve been thinking a lot about influencers and authenticity and I’m curious to hear your opinions! Do you think the backlash from the Tiktok trend is blown out of proportion? Do you think influencers should have a responsibility to be transparent with their audience? What are your thoughts on authenticity vs originality vs entertainment? Can influencers truly be authentic if their personality is commoditized? Also, I'm still tweaking my lighting and new setup, so bear with me as I figure out how to make it look best!

I was wondering if you were going to make a point here and reveal that you also use AI tools like ChatGPT to help streamline your own creative / planning process for YT. (Maybe you don't consider yourself an influencer at 80K+ subs?) Do you feel it wouldn't work in your channels favour to add in that little tidbit? I think since all the content creators are going in an "authenticity" / "transparency" direction (at the moment) it would've been cool to hear you say it - and it isn't something to be embarrassed about. Did enjoy the part where you mentioned your previous channel and how the comments affected your own mindset.

This just confirms to me that the rise of “influencers” over the last decade is one of the most culturally corrosive things in modern history. I keep seeing people, who aren’t influencers, saying “well duh it was fake, you should’ve known”….yea if you’re like me, who is 24, but a 12, 14, 16 year old? Young girls are incredibly impressionable & don’t have the life experience to realize that no one truly looks or lives like that. Influencers have young audiences, & they take advantage of that. It’s sickening to me. And even knowing it’s fake, the standards they push are still harmful.

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just repeating one of the most revealing things I've ever heard about human nature. I have a Masters in Criminology, but this little nugget actually came from the most successful salesperson I've ever met, not from within sociology or psychology. She said, "People **WANT** to be sold." That may not sound like much, on the surface level, but if you dig deeper and pull it apart, that's how a lot of people get taken advantage of. Skilled manipulators have figured out how to tap into this, whether they realize it consciously or not, and sell their agendas. That one sentence, that I heard almost a decade ago, still lives in my head rent free, and keeps proving itself more true as the years pass. This is how people manipulate you, both for harmless good...or out of their own selfishness.
@JasminMiettunen2 күн бұрын

I do have teenagers though. They are not that into social media which makes me happy. But we do talk to them about what is popular or what we see. When they were younger, we talked about all of the challenges like eating tide pods and things that were dangerous. Did I think my kids would actually eat them? No, but kids do, so we talked about it. I can see (especially young girls) how it can heavily influence decisions they make. I think the responsibility lies partly on the creators, partly on parents, and partly on viewers who are not children.

Hey Kait! Great video!!❤ I think that regulation on social media is desperately needed when it comes to anyone using/reviewing products that they're linking for purchase. It remains big loophole in regard to truth in advertising. FCC regulations don't go far enough and I haven't heard of a single consequence where someone violated the rules. What good are they if no one is able to enforce them? Brands are exploiting influencers, influencers are taking advantage of their communities, and both are making bank off of the lie. To be clear, it isn't "all influencers," of course, but like in life, you have to be discerning enough to recognize truth from fiction--particularly when that line can be very blurry. I have 2 kids at impressionable ages: 16 and 10. My older kid approches all media with a very healthy dose of cynicism, but I do worry about my tween daughter. I do my best to help her be critical of what she watches. But she makes videos herself and i often find myself in awe of what she produces and how she edits her material to make it look a specific way or that specific thing happened when it really didn't...i have no idea how she does it. I'm hopeful that her knowledge of what goes on behind the camera will make it easier to think critically when she's consuming content. However, neither child has ever had a media literacy class or has had elements of that incorporated into lessons at school--at least not from any tests or classwork that is sent home. I think that is an area that needs serious attention and I'd love to know what educators have to say on the subject. Thank you for creating such interesting and insightful content. You make my sociological brain so happy and engaged! ❤❤❤

My 8th-grader has received a lot of information on this over the years - particularly regarding the Internet. Unfortunately, I suspect she's in the minority: she has attended a STEM magnet for elementary school and an IB middle school. She's sure better at picking out AI art than I am! We do monitor her usage, but it is *relentless*. 😐

Thank you for a sane rational video in which you share an opinion based on reality logic , and research. Its not boring, either, i actually appreciate your perspective on these things. Bravo. I also think you look pretty, i like your makeup, the choker and t shirt give you a cool rocker chic vibe. You bring substance and value to this platform, i applaud you, Kait!

It honestly is that deep though and you shouldn’t have to explain why. Everyone experiences things differently so every feeling is valid. Influencers need to be transparent. End of story.

Authenticity might be the wrong term to engage with social media influencers. It's more verisimilitude, that is when something in a movie feels real enough to suspend your disbelief. People should engage with influencers like they do with a tv show or movie - it's not real, just have fun.

It confuses me why people are addicted to watching rage baiting! I literally just block these ppl but as someone who makes videos it seems like you have to rage bait to get views...and I refuse to do that hence my views are way lower. Its like moral and ethics doesn't sell.

At surface level I can totally see how someone may think "its not that deep" but in the grand scheme of things the level that others absorb and are affected by the influencers and what they show is intense. Like you said, influencers need to consider their impact. The consumer needs to consider who they are watching too but sometimes you find out too late. I think overall being honest and up front is always best. Its better to be honest for the sake of yourself and for the sake of others. Many influencers seem so focused on the views and money and in the end that isn't genuine love or interest in who they are. They can't feel good to try to live up to that and be so focused on pleasing others and sharing what you think they want. It seems be a bad pattern where influencers are indirectly telling themselves "im not enough, i have to do A, B and C to please my followers and get views." It looks nice so consumers view it rhen they think "im not enough because im not doing what the influencer is doing". When i scroll through content it is easy to click and scroll through the eye catching stuff but when i find a video that seems like a real person, it makes me feel so good and refreshed.

10 layers of foundation? I am surprised so many people feel for that content. I might just be bias- living in southeast Louisiana where the humidity averages 90% - maintained concealer is tricky.

As a 🇨🇦 kid who grew up in the 90's, I'm deeply grateful for the Canadian Governments efforts to instill media literacy in children through commercials about literacy in media. They were super interesting for kids, but also showed us just how easy it is to trick an audience and to be careful believing everything you watch. #househippogeneration

Now, as an adult who just turned 26. I can see how so many of these influencers made me question my own level of productivity and constantly having time to do everything on their to do list. It always blew my mind that someone could have that much free time to complete everything.

I've never thought any social media was real just because you have to set up, film, edit etc. How can it be spontaneous? But then I make images for a living.

Some influencers have become the type of person they despise as they find selling ideas for money is linked to selling their soul.

Hey, Kate. I originally found you for your beauty reviews. I understand commentary is performing well, and I love it as well. Have you thought about creating a second channel for people like myself who really value your product opinions? I don’t have any other socials besides KZbin.

Sadly, I just don't have passion for beauty anymore and KZbin videos take SO much effort. But I regularly post beauty reviews on Instagram!

I realized a while ago that TikTok runs on sensationalism. Constantly having to expend that kind of energy, when you don’t really mean it just to go viral seems exhausting to me.

The voice change seems just curious to me, like women do it all the time I actually do it without realizing it. Tone switching like. It happens, you adjust your tone to match what the situation requires from you and actually many people even do it while being unaware of it, many women specially. Since I became aware of doing it I can hear myself doing it but honestly it's not a crime lol also the boba person is like... the same that the hot wings one? if it's not a big deal regarding hot wings when thats like his entire company, why would it be a big deal for a little fella drinking boba tea for months or whatever
