Excellent review! Appreciate the look under the hood, noise levels, thermals and that underrated 300 nit display. Brightness uniformity looks even better than on 500 nit panel - though due to sample variance, YMMV. I’ve seen a few reviews for the 5i variant, but your is THE first for AMD, beating even titans such as Jarrod’s Tech and Notebookcheck. Speaking of the latter, I’ve sent them a link to your video, and hope they’ll post in on the product page. They’ve covered the exact same SKU in one of their articles - but are yet to link any reviews (and/or publish their own). If I may ask, have you seen any options to undervolt dGPU via either Vantage or BIOS? If not, it would be interesting to see how this laptop performs using iGPU alone - e.g. battery life, thermals and acoustics using only Radeon 780M. Because if anything, this is one area where Slim 5 should beat the latest Pro models (as their integrated graphics are far slower / less useful on their own).
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
I haven’t done any undervolting, but as you say the 780m is exceptionally capable as a daily driver iGPU for even moderate gaming tasks. The battery life is quite good in mixed mode (hybrid), if you through it into iGPU mode it goes up further. I found the same tend with the Lenovo LOQ I reviewed a few weeks ago (7640HS with the 760m). Heck I even did gaming in the mere 760m and was shocked at the results. The 780m simply does even better than the 760m And yes the pro models only have 710m, which are much inferior. Still good enough for daily tasks but not for more intensive tasks

Good review Are you going to review legion slim 7i?
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
I’ve already ordered it and it’s already shipped. So yes, very soon.
@DotJus Жыл бұрын
Great review. What’s weird is it looks like the Slim 5i (Gen 8) is actually slim and a much lighter colour.
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
From what I understand the 4050 model of both is thinner (amd and intel) I guess the needed the extra cooling space on the 4060 model
@DotJus Жыл бұрын
@@TechGuyBeau oh interesting!! I really wanted the slimmer design and the darker (AMD) colour. Happy to sacrifice GPU if that’s all I need to do.
@DotJus Жыл бұрын
Just realised the colour is not necessarily tied to the CPU. It simply coincided that way on the sales I was looking at.

Did you remove the piece of metal to make sure that this laptop has 2 ram slots? I just ordered mine with an rtx 4070 and am worried that one of them might be soldered to the motherboard. Are you 100% sure that both ram sticks can be upgraded?

Hello, I am planning to buy the legion slim 5i (i7-13700H/4060). It seems similar to the slim 5 but I can't get the difference between those 2 Anyway would you recommend this laptop for work usage while having good gaming performances ? (Got a deal at 1400euros)
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
They are the same. But the slim 5 has the better processor. Otherwise no difference. If you want good battery definitely go with this amd model here

Hi, I would like to ask if the rtx 4060 version on this laptop gives a very different performance than the rtx 4050 version when using 3d modeling and rendering apps?
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
A little bit sure, but it won’t be ground breaking. I’m reviewing a 4050 laptop right now, I’m surprised how capable it is, especially in professional workflow. Basically if the 4050 is much cheaper, don’t feel bad, it’s still a great gpu

What's the difference between LOQ and Slim? I understand that Legion is the premium one and the other two are budget right? So is there any reason to get Slim instead of LOQ is LOQ is cheaper?
@vine-dc1jd Жыл бұрын
The legion has a better screen resolution, higher refreshrate, ram is upgradeable, battery lasts more on the slim, better build quality etc.

I've got a question, in India this one isn't available anywhere on internet, but i managed to find this on a Lenovo official store for 1.27 lakh INR (1530$) (this is pretty much unbelievable since legion 5 pro with 4060 costs at 1.7 lakh INR (2050$) ) But Lenovo LoQ with i7 13th gen with 4060 variant costs at 1.1 lakh INR (1300$) here So what would be better, LOQ or Slim? I was looking for gaming performance (mostly), Display and battery life, and planning to use it for next 4-5 years. The thing about me asking between LoQ and Legion s5 is because of wondering if it is really worth it from going from LoQ to Slim 5 for the increase in price, and I'm not sure whether which one gives better performance in games here (since i heard slim's 4060 might perform worse than LoQ's)

I prefered this over the Legion 5 Pro due to the IGP. The 780m can handle practically everything on its own except for heavy workloads or gaming. Therefor I only use the igp 90% of the time. The 610m however in the 7745hx needs help quite often. The 7745hx doesn't have any advantage in mobile mode, only when plugged in, can it provide more performance. In every other scenario where you need less power, the slim seems to be the better choice. I am hoping to finetune the CPU + iGpu is finetuneable enough to be a standalone system and the dgpu will only be necessary for gaming. Which seems to be the case.
@TechGuyBeau Жыл бұрын
The 780m obliterates the 610m in demanding tasks yeah. Both are fine for just day to day desktop use for sure, however the 780M is capable of doing AAA gaming and other demanding tasks at a reasonable settings
@furglii Жыл бұрын
@@TechGuyBeau As a web developer I know how to bring the 610m to its knees in daily use scenarios. Why didn't AMD didn't give the 7745hx 4 CUs, could be such a well balanced APU for non gaming scenarios.

would you happen to know anything about the BIOS limiting the UMA frame buffer setting to 2GB and if it will get updated? For my slim 5, I noticed the only options for UMA Frame Buffer are 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB, and upon checking HWInfo each of these settings does in fact cap the iGPU Vram to that number.
