you can actually access the advanced BIOS on this laptop with these steps: What you do is after you boot into the bios using f2, press Fn + R + N 3 times, then press Ctrl Alt Delete and then F2 right after to go back to the bios. When u get into the bios again press more options and there should be an insane level of customization. Hope this helps.

@chriswi I ordered it for pickup and it says it'll be ready on Friday. But I have had both ryzen 5 and 7 on other systems and I think you'll be just fine with a ryzen 5. I don't think there is that much of a notable difference. The fact that I got it the 4060gpu version for 400 dollars off at a total of 900 dollars was a crazy deal itself.

Wow that's so nice to see how much more control Lenovo vantage gives you now!! Thats 1 of the very very few faults I give my older legion 5, you have no control of the fans outside of the pre programmed settings and you only can overclock the GPU by 0.2 ghz I believe. It's very minimal but this Lenovo vantage is a huge step up

That screen is just perfect. 165hz 2560x1600 is ideal, you can use 1280x800 if you're in low power mode. I think this gen is a pass because poor value but if someone didnt have a laptop, this wouldn't be a bad choice.

@RR2SS build quality is great, but there is a little keyboard flex. Researched it and its pretty standard on this model. In practical use (playing games, typing) I've never noticed it, but if you're really sensitive to that sort of thing you may want to go for a different laptop. Besides that, the build is quality.

@@sarperaydog1055 not really, does well in revit, tekla, sketch up, (majority of civil engineering cad software) haven't spent much time on blender but no complaints so far. While the battery life is atrocious compared to my old x455 in its prime condition, compared to most other laptop tho I'll say it's one of the better one. So if you're considering to use it on a college, commute or other places with limited plug as long as you remember to charge your laptop you will expect it to last from 1 to 2 hours sometimes more but never less, depending on the task. The display are for me personally is one of the more important selling point it has compared to other laptop (at least in Indonesian market in it's price range) as it's one of the few with 2560*1600 165 Hz display instead of the more common 1920*1080 144Hz display, plus it having 16:10 aspect ratio really gives you an extra room you never know you needed especially in modeling. Some people points out that it has a better keyboard feels while typing but I personally found that there's no different whatsoever than other laptop. With that in mind it does have a full sized num pad on the right hand side of the keyboard so that's nice. For weight it's pretty much standard with any gaming laptop, and by that i mean it's about to collapse under it's own weight and become a black hole. Not really but you won't be able to comfortably have it on your lap, or on your hand while doing presentation, basically you need to put it down to use it for a long period of time. The dimension itself is again pretty standard, despite having a bigger screen they really do a good job on keeping the bezel thin. The audio isn't something to brag about but I've heard laptop with worse speakers. It does have a 1080p camera instead of the usual 720p for video conference, it's still bad compared to your phone but better have it as is than not at all. The only things that irks me is that you could really see the dust sitting on top of its grey colour, i don't know if it's purely the color or the paint or the shine, but it really easy to spot just after a little of outdoor use (Maybe it's just because i live in Indonesia). There you go my 3 month experience with it. Keep in mind that I'm a college student on civil engineering so my use of the laptop might not represent the experience you will have later on. If you need things to be cleared up then just ask away Hope this help

Just a quick word of warning from someone who's been using the laptop for over a month: there was an issue with either Valorant or the machine I received, where there's a rare but recurring issue - the keyboard seems to completely disconnect midgame for a few seconds. It happens about once every 10-20 hours of gameplay, so its not too often, but its something to consider. Another issue that's confirmed to be Valorant specific is that the laptop can entirely crash during gameplay, which is much more rare but obviously much more intrusive when it happens. Other than that, I've been finding the specs are great!

I had this issue previously on a desktop the mouse disconnects midgame reinstalling Valorant and GHUB (logitech) fixed the issue So maybe try reinstalling Lenovo chipset driver or somethink.

Brilliant review that helped me decide to opt for the Slim 5 with i7, RTX 4060 and WQXGA 240 Hz. Could also have gone for the ROG Strix G16 with an i9, RTX 4060 again but with a WUXGA screen. Decided to opt for the Lenovo build quality and the better screen thinking an i9 over an i7 wouldn't net me as much of an improvement as a WQXGA screen vs a WUXGA. Watched your reviews of both and the Lenovo worked better for me and was slightly cheaper with $170 off.

This is an awesome review! I've watched it twice now, from start to finish. I love that you go into details about the GPU setup (i.e. which video output ports are wired to which GPU). I also really appreciate the Linux Live CD test! I plan on getting one of these to use as a Linux workstation. I really don't care about the dGPU as most of the time I have this switched off. A little worried about USB-C charging though - this is a "must have" feature for me. Anyway, great review, thank you!!!

@@Adrenaline_chaser It's not that I don't _need_ a dedicated GPU, it's just that a lot of the time I don't need one. Because I spend a lot of time traveling, I want to get as much battery life as possible (when I don't have access to a power socket). When I'm not using the dedicated GPU, I prefer to turn it off (if I'm traveling), as I get much better battery life. For example, I have a Legion 5 gen 5 (with an 80Whr battery). With the dedicated GPU powered on, I get around 2 hours on a full charge. With the dedicated GPU disabled, I get 7 to 8 hours. I still need a dedicated GPU for some of the things I need to do, I just don't want it powered on all the time.

While I absolutely love the amount of detail you go into, something I would love is to see some information about support for thunderbolt features. Being able to use a laptop with a dock (with multiple display outputs) is something that's critical to me for a laptop purchase, but the manufacturers are extremely cagey with USB C capabilities. Even though you say there's no mention of USB 4, I swear the documentation for this laptop (it could be the regular 5 and 5 pro) mention that the forward most USB C port is upgraded to USB 4 with the most recent updates. It would be a godsend to get some better information regarding the USB C capabilities of each port, including power input. I've got a lot of experience working with USB C so if you have any questions as to how to go about testing this I'd be happy to help

I just bought the new Ideapad 5 Pro 16 Gen8 for under 1000€. Ryzen 7 7840HS, 4050, 16 gb of ram, 1 Tb of storage. For the price it is unbeatable here in Europe. I am in the Computer Science field, gaming is not my main objective, I may need the graphics for AI libraries and CUDA.

If you need CUDA (for ML) the 6GB vram 4050 can be pretty limiting. Unfortunately most of the mobile chips are gimped with VRAM (even more than desktops). Just 3080 Ti and 4090 (cough 4080M) having truly decent vrams for for mobile ML. (EDIT: probably not a problem for students though, enjoy your machine 😄)

Legion Slim 5 series this year shares the chassis and thermal modules with the even cheaper tier LOQ 16, specifically the two radiators on the side are made of aluminum, as opposed to copper. This is probably why they don't have confidence on graphics card wattage.

The 4060 essentially never thermal throttles (@87C) on the gpu in this laptop. Only fur mark can get it there when you set it above @120watts. The thing is the performance of the 4060 peaks efficiency performance at around ~75watts anyways and you can match the stock performance at a mostly silent 60w if you undervolted and bump up the memory speed. The 4060 is so efficient that there is no reason even to use the 780m apu as it uses more wattage to accomplish the same tasks.

@@Y0URGRANDMA you are correct that this laptop can deliver the max performance of a RTX 4060, but the problem is that Legion 5 line never uses aluminum radiators until now. Cheaping out on things like this means that the machine could have hit the max 4060 performance with quieter fan speed, or could have more thermal room for VRAM temperature, or a higher CPU clock speed in games to improve 1% low frame etc.

Bought this laptop during summer sale in France (1200euros) with same spec, ryzen 7840hs rtx4060, all my games (mostly simulations) and softwares runs great with 60fps minimum stable, and great temps too, no more than 85c, running in personalised mode. In terms of fps it can go much higher than 60fps but personally i like to limit my fps in games. All running pretty smooth and the noise level is low. I'm using it mostly as a desktop replacement. Had previously Legion 5 amd5600h rtx 3060 and compare to it, this one is miles better !

Have a Pro 5i (i7/4060/32GB/1TB) and a Slim 5 (Ryzen 7840HS/4060/16GB/512GB) and am torn on which to keep. On one hand the Slim looks a bit more professional, is a great all rounder/Macbook replacement (for use at cafes as well as gaming) with better battery life and portability. On the other, the Pro has more grunt when plugged, and in a brief test I did, provided more power to the 4060 (120W vs. 110W). Both have the same screen on paper (QHD, 165HZ, 300 nit) though the Slim seems slightly brighter, but may just be a calibration thing. The Pro I got is a Costco variant with a 2 year warranty, so seems like the most logical choice. Better specs, a few extra ports, max performance, at the cost of a few ounces and only slightly worse battery with careful power mgmt/CPU limits in place. Portability is more of a 'nice to have' while realistically the most I'll be doing is taking it to the couch and back. Plus, while seemingly minor, the trackpad feels a lot more premium on the Pro, which makes a big difference in daily use.

Thanks for the help on what to look for on laptops, I actually managed to get a legion slim 5 for around 1500$ after taxes in Sweden where it's like 300-400$ more in general for laptops I managed to get a version with 7840hs, rtx 4070 8gb, 16gb drr5 ram 5600mhz, 1tb ssd, 2560x1600 165hz 16¨ unfortunately no rgb so losing slight performance there

wow. amazing laptop with decent price and good performance. it does not look like a gaming laptop so it won't draw any attention either. all in all an amazing product edit : i bought this laptop and omg i cant be happier with what ive got especially the thermals. rdr2 qhd high setting + dlss gets over 60fps and the thermals sit at 60 holy cow the thermals are crazy. thank you dear jarrod for proving such informative review

I love the 1200p resolution! More than the 1600p! (for my own reasons). But they CONTINUE to dump crap on the 1200p panels!!!! Do you guys remember the 11th gen intel Asus m16? That had a 144hz 1200p IPS panel variant, with 500 nits of brightness and 100% P3!!!!! Yes, you heard that right!! Then last year they dropped it down to 350 nits and 100% sRGB, and now this year 250-300 nits and 45% NTSC!!!!! WHAT A GARBAGE!!! Why is it so hard to get a good 1200p panel, just because it's lower res doesn't mean it has to be complete crap! They keep pissing on the 1200p panels like they are crap. That's the only thing that keeps getting worse every year instead of better... :(
