Just got a backpack at goodwill and a new stainless steel ozark trail cookset brand new at goodwill for a few dollars (color of the day is half off of items). I totally agree that the person makes the gear, because someone with decent skills could work more efficient than someone with all the best stuff who has very limited experience. I still use my Mora knives as well as the alcohol stoves I made in the early days even though I have purchased some higher end gear. Thanks for the video!

I love this vid. I'm currently doing a purge of my spare items & have actually cleared out most of the knives I own, except for Morakniv. I like the stainless Mora Top Q Allround. It's identical to the stainless Companion, but was cheaper in Canada, at the time. The lack of choices makes packing so much simpler. Keep up the good work!

Say Heah Dave, I really like and enjoyed my Lite Mora Carry. I teamed up my Mora 2000 with the Mora Hatchet and added a Bacho Laplander which actually fit great in my makeshift Haversack, I use to carry a Bokor Black Rold because I didn't trust my Mora 2000, That all changed, Today my Mora 2000 comes on my hip when I use this lite carry Trio and I don't bring my rold along anymore, I realized how great that dual grind works wood. So when I found out William Collins has a Custom with a dual grind I jumped on it. It's called the Master Woodsman and it's a beauty, I got the Black G-10 with orange liners and because he's a Custom knife maker the standard I think comes in O1, But watching his channel made me research the CPM 154, and that's what I got, Since the CPM 154 faired pretty good against the O1, I figured the fact that it's easier to maintain a stainless blade I thought I would give it a chance, Some say the CPM S35Vn holds a better edge, I got the CPM 154 because it has more carbon and I'm from the old school, Higher Carbon Keener Edge. Regardless I know I'm going to be happy.

Denim jeans work the best for chat cloth , I enjoy making fires with churt and steel , I haven't used fire starters for a long time I also use only what I find in the woods and my ferro rod now , I don't have most of my original gear I gave it away to people who needed it ! Great advice Dave.We all learn with experience and repetition. I saw a Fiskers splitting axe at Home depot on sale for $31 so I couldn't pass that deal up. It's like long hatchet maybe 18" to 20" with the wide splitting head. It works great. I guess I will have to mail order them Husky hatchet, but I would rather hand select the handle. Say Heah David, I totally understand. I have a few Knives, Axe, Saws. But for a great time a Afternoon Delight, a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato, I made a pretty good lite set with my Mira 2000 and the Mora Hatchet and a Baccho Laplander, a makeshift haversack with the other C's, Then when the brush started to grow crazy, I changed to a long knife instead of a hatchet, I used my Case Pawnee fix blade and my Case Jungle Machete Knife and my Woodhandle Fiskar, Not necessarily a expensive set, But I can clear the the brush and the Pawnee is nice and thin so making feathers is easy with it. I like the 1095 CroVan because it's the same as my older CarbonV knives, so I bought almost the whole line of Beckers over the years. I always looked at the BK-4 as a chopper but found my BK-9 to do a better job. But when I used it as a machete to clear through the brush, The light went off. Of course it's a Machete. Now that it's discontinued with the BK-5. You can find them at a good price, I started using the BK-4 as a large knife that's multi functional. And I'm finding more uses for it, instead of just a chopper I use it as a large knife and I team it with a smaller knife, IN my case I have other BK's so it's not hard for me to team up a smaller knife with it, I like using my Mora 510 as a neck knife and the BK-4 this time of the year too. I mention that they discontinued them and like with other Beckers after their discontinued they go up in value. Yeah, David, It's a good time to get one. A pretty nice large knife. That curve you can carve and do fine work and it chops pretty good too and I baton with mine. Think about it, I told you as a friend. Laterz.

Say Heah Dave, When I started out, I was strictly a 3Knife Carry type of guy. Sometimes a 4Knife if we went up North. Then I watched VietNormbo on the Estwing Sportsman Hatchet video and I never L@@Ked back. Today I actually have 4 Hatchets and a Tomahawk that I use alot. One of my Fav's is my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet, and my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, also my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet also my WarBeast Tomahawk. Oh, I don't want to forget one of my Fav's my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the Heavy vy Duty y Sheath and Sling. Of I also use my Estwings and the Double Bit Hatchet depending what tools I use on that day. Oh, Yeah, I also use a Saw. If I want to go ultra lite my Mora 2000 and Mora Hatchet with my Bacho Laplander is my choice. If I want to go lite but I might do a overnighter I might go with my Rodent 5 with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw or my Modified Rodent 6 with my Mora 510 as my Neck Knife. I figure if I have them then why not use them. I also could go a little more TactiKewl with my S. O. G. Pillar Fix Blade my Johnson Adventure Parangatang with Black Handles, Yeah, when I found out that my ZT SWABBIE or my ZT Zomstro interchanged handles with my Potbelly and my Parangatang. Actually I like the black handles alot better and my Wicked Tough Saw makes for a very solid Sumner Long Knife Set. Usually I don't bring a Hatchet because if the mild weather and besides I find the Parangatang is plenty. I might bring a Military tool with a Can Opener which I have a couple of good ones even like my Victorinox Farmer or my Rangergrip 78 or my British Army Issue Clap Knife or my Bokor Tec-Tool. If I go with my Bokor 2011 Collection I like to team it with my vintage Myerchin in 440c and nail nick. Again, If I have them why not use them, right. I find a Afternoon Delight is better than going to Mc Dee's and tge scenery is much nicer, plus I could smoke my cigar after I munch. I guess that's it. I'll be posting soon, take care.,,. p

nice kit to start with David....if i can remember back correctly,my beginners gear consisted of the following items i had my moms paring knife, some stick matches, a candle, an old aluminum army canteen, food stuffs usually consisted of a block of cheese, a tube of ritz crackers, a can of cream style corn or perhaps corn beef hash (the can doubled as a kettle) a blanket (not wool) every thing was rolled in a bit of old painters tarp, tied off and suspended over the shoulder with some cotton cloths line my mom let me have. i can remember suffering greatly from the skeeters and often from the cold and rain, but it only made the experience more memorable and (in my young mind) more heroic! As i grew into my teenage years my gear improved considerably...i remember my first real knife...it was a Case 'Original Buffalo Skinner' Yea Baby! Well now, to be honest, i never did skin a buffalo with that knife...but it cleaned a few squirrels and a ton of fish and i was convinced made me a bit taller some how...my friends and i had the five C's figured out fifty three years ago, of course there was some trial and error involved anyhow amigo, i'm rambling...great topic!...atb...woods

Say Heah Dave, Looking back at my beginning's, I remember my first so called bush craft knife. It was a Buck Caper, Geez I don't even know if they make them anymore, But it was small and sirt of a Kephart point. a Western Knife and Hatchet Combo which I still have, I believe it was called the Black Widow because of the black/aluminum spacers handle. The knife was a Skinner, But the hatchet is all steel and tough as nail's. It thore down wall's when remodling and dug alot of root's Plus processed alot of fire's. Today I have a few hatchet/axes plus a nice stable of different variety and proved knives, somebover $1,000.00 for one to some of my Fav. Mora and I even still have my North West Territory fix blade that back then cost $10.00, I couldn't find it, But after Dad died, I found it in his painting tool box, It eas used to mix point and It was hell cleaning it up. But I did and now it's still very serviceable and very sharp. But I'm still surprised the Ka-Bar MK-1 isn't used more for bush craft. because my Navy issue K-1 with all the Love Mark's and chipped edge is still scary sharp, beat up but I still use it when I team it with my issue U. S. N. Utility Knife yeah the U. S. M. C. but with Navy on it, Military Issue. So yeah, doing this a few 24's, I think I'm a good judge in cutting tool's, So yeah, I like my Swampies.,,.

Very good video. In the beginning a kit like this is the only thing you can afford. When you are experienced it's the only kit you need. It's that 'in between' period where you think gear is more important than skills that can made your hobby expensive. I'm no exception and I did buy gear I never used. I'm older so many of the modern stuff was not even available. I can imagine when you are younger and getting into bushcraft and survival now the temptation of buying expensive gear is even greater. Here's an idea. Never buy the same day you see it. Make a list of the items you ended up not buying with the price. Add up the prices and in no time you can spend a month in nature in some far away country.
