Let’s say you are a single person painting crew, you are the business owner and the only painter. A lot of solo painters screw themselves by selling their work almost for free. Most painters could double their prices and stay just as busy. You’d HAVE to charge the customer $50/h to run the business at a minimum(depending on location), that gives you the ability to pay yourself, the only painter, anywhere from 15-25/h The rest of the money goes to running the business/profit I budget 4 hours to paint the walls in a medium sized bedroom, that means I have to charge $200 per bedroom, add trim and that’s an extra $100-150, add ceiling and it’s an extra 100. Ad a door and that’s $50 a door. Now with a 2 person crew that allows you to predict how much it’s going to cost in labor to finish a job/how long it will take. Charging 400 to paint a room would give us 8 hours to paint that wall, that may seem like a long time but you have to include set up time/drive time/clean up, and if it’s a 2 person crew then you’ll be done in 4 hours and should be able to paint 2 rooms in a day. If you finish faster then predicted then you just copped a bonus, and that’s how you incentivize fast workers Something to consider is sales/closing rates, the more employees you have the more sales you want to close, but if you are solo then you can close 20% and be fine. That allows you to charge a bunch. Labor should be 40-50% of the total price a painter tells a customer, paint should be 15% unless it’s a fence.

A single solo painter should make 100k per year, that’s a little over 2k per week. Or $400 a day, that’s an 8 hour day at $50/h. For every employee you hire expect your income to increase about 16k per painter after overhead/taxes. But you must have your pricing down before hiring someone. Some people will say “I got a guy that will paint this room for $100” well frankly, that’s an illegitimate business that’s doomed for failure and probably won’t be around for 10 more years. Does he offer a warranty? $100 per room is long gone! We want to work for people who understand the value that we painters can bring.

Overspray & oil based interesting points at 49:00. I wondered how you actually calculated your base amount. Wondered about liability coverage or how you cover in contracts (if you use them). You covered so many areas: interior, exterior, epoxy flooring. Enjoyed the workshop portions. John 3:3 is a great verse. It would be great to have it on your company t-shirt. Thank you Mr. (and Mrs.) Berry.

Just wondering if it's possible to be profitable doing only interior projects, not confident doing exterior. It will be just me, not going to scale up and start hiring (yet).

You do well mate. I work exactly the same way. I enjoy your videos. I disagree on some of your techniques, but in the main, we are pretty much the same. Maybe the only difference is I still make my own paint which costs around NZ$8 a litre to make. I've done this for 40 years, and I love what I do, and I love watching painters who are passionate about what they do. Good on you.

@@Idahopainter Maybe it’s the geographical location? I’m in Atlanta. I’ve restricted my painting to residential re-paints, but I’m considering offering exterior painting. I’m not crazy about heights, but not paralyzed by them, either. Painters here are getting $3/sf for exteriors, and they aren’t doing nearly as high quality a job as you are. My neighbor just paid $4,500 for a 1500sf house and at least 30% of it is brick that didn’t get painted. They said they went with the low bid. The painters did a middling job. It’s a ranch house as well. Can’t believe I didn’t bid/get that job.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/raOvqHuraNCIqMU Chris, What do you do about various features of the landscaping when it comes to bidding fences and houses? For example, what about when there is a hill that covers part of a fence (half way up maybe) or a house because of the way the ground is where the structure meets the ground? Or what about various landscaping materials (bark, rocks, etc) and whether they cover parts of what should be painted? How do you address the issue with the customer? Are there options they customer can be given (such as not painting that part that is covered)? And what about pricing as well? And how do you respond when a potential customer asks you how you estimate a job? Do you start going into details explaining it to them or is there some better way to handle it? Are there any potential consequences for going into the details? And what about the difference between estimates and bids? Do you work (through the entire job) based on estimate only? Do you start with estimate then move to bid? Why? Why not? And what about changes to the scope of work (whether unforeseen or not)? How can that be handled? And should costs in a proposal be broken down or just a single flat price given? If so then how to break it down? How granular to break it down? What basis for the break down (eg: by category? by stage? by.. ?).. Why? Why not?
