COMPLETELY LIVE performance from "The Big...", including David McCallum's intro!!
A very rare treat; as this is one of only TWO COMPLETELY LIVE performances that the "Original 5" ever did on TV.
On the Ed Sullivan show "Turn!" was live, but "Mr. Tambourine Man" was lip synched.
The original Byrds in all their glory, and their weaknessess, are on good display here.
Exciting because it's all live, and also quite "Jagged" & "Stiff" sounding, as the "Original 5" was never known for their "Tight Live Act", the primitive sound systems of the day notwithstanding.
Rough rythym section, Michael Clarke is playing the songs slow, Gene Clark is playing the tambourine without much sense of metre or time, etc.
In Gene's defense, I would say that he resented the Tambourine, after getting "Stuck" with it when Crosby took the guitar out of hands.
EQUALLY wonderful are the AMAZING audience shots; capturing the fun, exuberance, and exhileration of a mid '60's rock concert.
That's what I'm talkin' about, baby.
This show was filmed on October 19, 1965, and was shown on TV in early 1966.
A VERY HUMOUROUS scene comes at 5:09. As the camera pans past all the girls faces, not knowing quite how to react to this song about a Welsh coal mining disaster, and ends on the face of a jealous boyfriend!
Capturing The Byrds at the peak of their affluence, this is a wonderful, live look at pop history.

I heard Tambourine Man for the first time from a distance on the wind in Brecon, Wales one evening in 1965. In the Uk we had never heard anything like it and the Byrds became my favourite band and remain so despite the passage of 55 years. Their harmonies are unsurpassed to this day and McGuinn's voice, which I heard live in Manchester England in 71 or 72 and again in Sheffield in the early 2000s is still spellbinding. I shall never tire of listening to their fabulous music.

We must be about the same age. I saw the Byrds at the Marigold Ballroom in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1967. Gene Clark had briefly rejoined the Byrds soon to leave again. He (like me had a fear of flying). One of the best concerts I had ever been to. My first concert was the Yardbirds at Daytons Department Store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1966. Paul Samewll-Smith had departed the band, and Jeff Beck brought in his friend Jimmy Page in on bass no less!

@@itwasntmeboningbivvy181 I would love to have seen the original line up. They did come to the UK shortly after Tambourine Man and appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops and did a few tour dates but nothing near me. When I saw them in 71 or 72 at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, the original members had gone apart from McGuinn of course. Disappointing but, as a guitarist myself, Clarence White was something else. I was in a semi-pro band at that time and we used to play some Byrds numbers-Tambourine Man, Bells of Rhymney, Here without you, My back pages etc-rather badly- but they went down well with audiences because as far as I know, there were no other bands on North Lancashire playing that sort of music. And we did have an electric 12 string.! I'm guessing you missed Clapton in the Yardbirds because by 66 I think he had left them to join John Mayall.

What an inimitable group- "folk-rock" is here, children! A logical "progression" to my mind...Think of the great groups who formed when these guys split- The Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby, Stills, etc! And -with the exception of the drummer, Mike Smith? the continued success as a one man act- Gene, Chris -both released terrific albums now worth mega bucks- I tried to buy them in CD format because I never had the album or it got scratches- I was always keen to lend my favorite albums- pass the groove, no pun intended on- educate! Turn your friends on the safe way! BRAVO! ( I have tears in my eyes ...BLESS Pete Seeger too for turning us on to a book of the Christian Bible many of us weren't familiar with...) Namaste

They came to my college (Ohio University) as part of a Dick Clark Cavalcade of Stars tour about one month after this was filmed. I've heard the observations that they weren't a good live group, but that night they were spot on. The college kids only wanted to see them; the rest were just novelty acts (Paul Revere and the Raiders, Bo Diddley, and so on). You could see the group dynamics on full display: McGuinn deadly serious, Gene Clarke very uncomfortable without a guitar, Crosby eating up the celebrity of it all, Hillman looking like "How did I go from Bluegrass to this?, and Michael Clark just doing his best looking like one of the Stones. It was quite a night.

I don't think anyone told Grace Slick and Marty Balin they couldn't sing, or the guys in Moby Grape for that matter. Foolish assumption to make about musicians from a far hipper city than LA. Nobody came close to The Byrds talent-wise though so Chris should've restricted his comment to reference his own band.

David is the guy who comes in with the "high" voice on top for the harmonies. He deserves a lot of credit for that, in my opinion. It's an important part of the vocal sound of the original lineup. As good as other musicians have been, who came in and out over the years, they never got "quite" that vocal sound that they had when David was there...Great post.

This is a rare treat in that "back in the day," many if not most of the television performances by rock groups just had them lip synch to their own record. This is totally live and given the relatively poor mic setups for TV studios of the time, it sounds really quite good, especially McGuinn's Rick.

l am now a young 75 and as a teen through the1960s I enjoyed the London club scene big time and all my pals thought The Byrds outstripped the likes of The Beatles and The Stones by miles! Hanging on the wall in my studio, in a place of honour since 1965 after I obtained it during my first visit to Arlington Virginia is an album cover containing a vinyl LP of Mr Tambourine Man signed by the entire group which I treasure to this day. When I met Mick Jagger in Mustique in 1988, as we both shared the same Italian architect Mario Spinella, when we built our villas on Mustique and St Vincent I showed him the signed LP which he would have bought at any price, but was not for sale and remains priceless to this day. At least then I got Mick to sing at my Norwegian wife's 40th Birthday party celebration's in January 1989 on Basils Bar in Mustique and Ringo Star and Barbara Bach turned up so a great party that finished at 8 am the following morning! I still listen to the Byrds at least 2 or 3 times a week. They were then and to this day remain the best Folk Rock group EVER!!!

I'm 47 so I wasn't there but I was still born during rock n roll's heydey and as a teen listened to 1950's and 1960's rock. The 1980's and early 90's weren't bad either. Wow! What an amazing bit of footage of a totally 'live' performance by this iconic band. The driving percussion and the prominent-enough tambourine was simply terrific. This was an uncommonly well-done recording for the time--almost 50 years ago! I saw The Byrds in person in Martin, Tennessee, in December 1965. They were kind of co-headliners with Paul Revere & The Raiders. It was a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars show. Bo Diddley was another performer in that show. It was memorable, just amazing stuff.

DoctorBohr The Byrds were rather notorious for not giving much time for rehearsing, so a good number of performances were rough around the edges with other factors contributing to that aspect from time to time--weed, booze, maybe blow. Who the hell knows?! So you wanna be a rock-and-roll star? Then listen now to what I say. And be prepared for some rough edges; we've seen a lot of 'em over the years.

The very talented Chris Hillman thrown to the left like an afterthought and never shown by the camera. Even audience members get more camera time!

Chris and Michael were both very talented. Chris eventually got more camera time once David was fired. His post-byrds work is fantastic. As for Michael, he wasn't very accomplished, but was able to pick up the drums in less than a year. It's a shame drinking got him and that his life wasn't well-documented.

Great clip, really takes you back to that time, the jangling, wonderful music heard over the radio, on TV, and on our record players. And yes, while it was McGuinn's band--how could it not be, he was the true veteran of the group with a lot of mileage behind him in just a few years--all were exemplary, with Clark's voice adding the right resonance and depth of feeling. What was really fun is Crosby's guitar work, much more animated and funky here than on most of the studio recordings. Everyone must have been having a blast, they were hot, young and (presumably) very confident.

And folks say that The Byrds were not a great live band?, listen to this priceless piece of history and realise what the truth was! Oh if they could still be together all five and performing today. If this is not the sound of paradise it surely must be extremely close!!!!!!!

Gene Clark is absolutely in time with his tambourine, in fact he sets some remarkable accents with it while singing. I like it. Roger`s guitar is amazing, David accamponies flawless and the rhyrthm section is tight. They easily stand the comparism to live perfomences of the beatles.

Great music from a great band. No lip synch from REAL MUSICIANS not the pretenders of today. Isn't McGuinn the best 12 string picker that ever walked the planet? I am proud of my fellow Chicagoan. These guys worked hard and EARNED IT, they didn't get popular from a vid on UTUBE, they put in the work and honed their chops in the bars and coffee houses like musicians have for years. Listen and learn Bieber and Jonas boys!!

There's just something you can't define about Gene Clark's stage presence but you get a real idea of it here. There's temperament and mood there. It could be astonishing even if McGuinn said was spastic on the tambourine.

I remember announcer from "The Man From U.N.C.L.E. David McCallum. I remember an interview with Roger McGuin. He said they got to England and found themselves being billed as "The American Beatles". They were absolutely mortified.
@warragul46
@warragul46 9 жыл бұрын
They shouldn't have been too mortified since their earlier incarnation The Beefeaters featuring McGuinn, Crosby and Clark were an imitation Beatles outfit, Even the cape worn in this clip is a lift from the Beatles film Help!

warragul46 McGuinn said, in the interview, that he never thought the Byrds were at the same level as the Beatles. It's ok. They still did pretty well. The girls in the audience certainly don't seem to have minded them.

greg raines They were both great bands. In Australia we had to put up with The Flies and The Cidadas If you want a good laugh at a poor attempt to be a Beatles type group check out The Cicadas on YoutTube doing "That's What I Want" - It sounds like a song from The Rutles but it was for real in 1964. We did have the Easybeats though and their rhythm guitarist George Young greatly aided his younger brothers in forming AC/AC.

greg raines Yes The Masters Apprentices came out of Adelaide. If you want a laugh checkout The Valentines - they had two lead singers one was Bon Scott (later AC/DC). Both bands were popular with girls and guys which was/is not always the case with Aussie bands. The Aussie bands I liked in the 60's were Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, The Loved Ones, The Wild Cherries, The Missing Links, Chain (often billed as The Chain or Phil Manning]s Chain) The Twilights - their version of Bad Boy is as good as anyones including The Beatles. The Missing Links, The Throb and The Town Criers (who were trying to be Jay & The Americans haha)

Rare to see a TV recording from 1965 where the band is not lip synching to the record. The Byrds were the real deal. I loved them as much as the Beatles. They were actually a greater musical influence in so many ways.

Fantastic recording. Great performances. My childhood soundtrack. Being the youngest, I always took the Crosby parts in my household, sometimes doubling with my late sis. Such great memories of my late brother playing his Byrds records and learning the parts. Later in life we would get together to write music and always played a few bytes tunes such as I Knew I'd Want You, She Don't Care About Time, Set You Free this Time, and Eight Miles High, among others.
