I LOVE this movie so damn much! The Whore was in a committed monogamous relationship, The Athlete was on a full academic scholarship, The Scholar was a star football player, The Virgin had just finished a sexual tryst with her professor, and The Fool was right all along!

Well, technically, the unicorn wasn't evil, it was just super, super hardcore dedicated. The only person who can tame a unicorn, mythologically speaking, is a virgin, right? And the Virgin in this setup is the Final Girl. The Whôrę dies first, because she's the opposite of a virgin (and this would also presumably apply to male virgins and whõrès). And since these are American horror movie tropes, the rest of the characters wouldn't (presumably) be virgins, either. So if the unicorn is hardcore, and *offended* by non-virginity, everyone except the Virgin would be killed.
@stevesheroan4131
@stevesheroan4131 17 күн бұрын
@ Lol, that’s definitely one way to look at it, but I would still argue that killing any non-virgin is pretty evil, technically speaking. Doesn’t bode well for the propagation of the species either if the unicorn is successful.

@ Your comments sparked my interest and after reading a few different sources I’ve determined that the lore for unicorns is maybe even more flexible than vampire lore. No two sources seem to agree across the board, but I did find several references that stated that unicorns could only be touched/tamed by virgins. Couldn’t directly find anything saying that they would attack non-virgins, but I don’t doubt that it’s out there.

"On another level, it's a serious critique of what we love and what we don't about horror movies. I love being scared. I love that mixture of thrill, of horror, that objectification/identification thing of wanting definitely for the people to be alright but at the same time hoping they'll go somewhere dark and face something awful. The things that I don't like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into Torture Porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had swung a little too far in that direction." - Joss Whedon

Brilliant film. A fun scary play on familiar horror genre tropes and culturally specific horror while also a meta commentary on us horror consumers and the media who provide the thrills and scares.

Love this movie. It made me fall in love with horror as a genre and I’ve gotten so into it. The tropes, the symbolism and themes, the skill.

A fun bit of trivia is that one of the reasons Sigourney Weaver signed on to the film is that she had never been in a film with a werewolf before and was excited to do so. She and the werewolf performer ended up hanging out together quite a bit on the set between scenes.

Cassie, I hope you watch The Wild Robot. It replaced Inside Out 2 for me as best animated film of the year and without giving any information about it, it would really hit home with you. This was a fun movie with a great little twist.

I saw a special preview of this movie before it came out in cinemas. There were a few showings at the time and Joss Whedon implored people not to give the big spoilers away...Nobody did. I also got to speak with Dan Payne, who was the actor who played Buckman, and he is the loveliest human.

Just've been on The Substance .. and HOLLY $HIT. Thats one of the strongest movie experiences I've had in my life .. and I had non of those for 10+ years maybe. One of the best movies I've ever watched and true piece of art with so many layers. I just keep discovering another one after another one in discussions about the movie. Hard recomendation - just be aware of a little horror, but also a ton of brilliant dark humor, amazing acting, effects, sound, picture .. everything.

I think you might dig "The Brothers Grimm" and "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters." Nice whimsical fantasies, if a tad dark, with nice endings, and they rely more on practical effects. Pretty good fun.

Great use of humor and jump scares and intrigue, all making for a fun watch. Thanks for all the fun and thrilling reactions this scary season! Oh, and congrats to you and Carly both on the podcast!
