The Cactus Braking System, Good or Bad Idea? - Survival Nomad 17

Welcome to another episode Scrap Mechanic Survival: Nomad! Today I am adding the highly requested cactus braking system into my mobile base. I'm also harvesting some broccoli and pineapple in preparation to unlock the other weapons, and finally painting the Hank Tank up!

This brings up an interesting question: Does the friction of the brakes become stronger if the amount of cacti touching the ground increases? You could put the hank tank on a slope facing sideways with the front brakes having what they have now, but the back ones having 3x3 grids of brakes. If the back slides as fast as the front, then increasing the cacti has not effect.

I love this idea. The brakes definitely seem like a good thing to have, and I really think it could be made to work with some tweaks. Also kinda think the pistons shouldn't lift it so high, because the wheels have friction with the ground also, and that should theoretically help.

The problem is scrap mechanic has no static friction Have you tried holding a piece of paper flat on you hand with your hand at an angle? The paper does not move because of static friction

If you lift the wheels up you go from 8 contact points with the ground to 4 contact points with the ground, so you may actually end up with less or similar total friction.

Those songs are awesome, I've recently been getting into some of Falkkone's stuff, and it's opened me to a whole world of symphonic metal. These snippets make it seem like you will be very quickly added to my playlists.

I think rusty metal (the kind you get on the ground level of the warehouses) is also equally high-friction, if I remember correctly. Also, you can use two bearings and place multiple cacti plants, to maximize the contact with the ground. The vehicle is heavy, so a mere 4 cactus blocks might not be nearly enough. Also, glass is easy to destroy, and bulletproof glass is expensive, so the net (block) is a good middle ground of visibility and security.

You could add a slideout section in the back right corner that slides out when you exit your seat. It would basically double the space between the craft bot and the wall with your bed. You could put your bed and a dress bot in there while keeping enough space around the craft bot.

The manequin boots and hands have higher friction than cactus Manequin boots, hands, Metal Window, Steel Pallet, Suport Pilar and Suport Pilar Stand all have 7 friction. Cactus have 6.

Scrapman: You're wrong. The extra bearings on the axels are mostly useless at the cost of complexity and fps. All af the mechanical parts have some flex in them. They are not rigid. This includes bearings, pistons and suspensions. Even is you remove the bearings, the suspensions will flex to allow for independent movement on both sides. It also will have the benefit to make the wheels even less floppy so that you can increase the engine power.

It may be possible, that the brackes reduce some lag, if they are deployed, because your complicated steerimg system is of the ground, but I could be wrong here.

Yeah he could, but the closing mechanism is there, so he can for example quickly escape a farmbot in a forest without getting stuck. These nets make him way too wide to maneuver trough the trees :D

scrapman, if you want to make a breaking system, try to use concrete 1 or scrap stone, you should have alot of these and they have the same friction value (or try to get Concrete Slab Blocks, which are even better), also, stop worrying about gas, getting gas is really no problem. Also keep the breaking system, because the less wheels touch the ground, the less laggy the game will be

Combine the front wheels onto a single axle/suspension assembly per side, reducing the complexity by 50%. Hard to describe in text, but single turn bearing between the two wheels, then then one tie rod on the outside of each wheel. This would keep the wheels parallel.

You could *probably* get most of the same anti-wheel-floppiness if you configured your wheels with overwheel steering with a bearing on both sides of the wheel. Might be worth testing on the Hank Tank? :)

if You think about removing the brakes, maybe use one of the pistons to make the platform of the cookbot retractable inside during the ride, and extend out when the Hank Tank is stationary, you'll regain the walking space you lost to the initial placement of the cookbot.

@Scrapman: Try adding a few more cacti to the brakes, it might be a ratio issue, your weight overpowers your friction. OR: convert them into jacks for small hops or to shimmy the hank tank if you bottom out.

Yes, I was wondering the same. I found that speed seems to link to strength. However, the speed wont affect the friction of the Cactus. The RV is simply heavier than the friction level of the cacti. I wonder if MORE cacti would help?

I'm a little behind on this new series and slowly catching up. Great music! My suggestion for the roof - a rooftop cafe with a row of six cookbots. The timing of six cookbots works out great - by the time you finish starting the sixth burger, the first burger is done! Since you can't queue up a bunch, this is a great way to craft several at a time. Also, their chattering together make nice company while on the road...

The breaking system is a good alternative way to lift up your vehicle to get to the under belly side without using your lift. . . if that need ever arises like it did when you had a deployable. Perhaps a good defense tool to use to make sure bots can't attack it by lifting it high above the ground (good for raids)? Who knows, with enough speed, you could make your bus jump. Speed-Racer Style. Might as well use those maxed out pistons for something.

You should have the cactus rase hank tank more so bots can’t easily attack it. This could work well since you just extended your doors with the window making it still possible to jump in. Like the music and the videos.

Only issue is that the boys could just attack the cacti plus it raises the center of mass by a ton and makes it incredibly prone to tipping over, it would make it impossible to park on hills.

ScrapMan The cactus is the best size to friction ratio so you may have to double up the cacti, since your wheels are like 1x2 blocks each you might need 4 more cacti to make a proper comparison.

put a sensor next to each piston and depending on how many blocks it sees, thats how much the pistons will extend, so the RV will always be level even if on a hill

I liked both songs you played. I'm a fan of ALL kinds of metal. From light melodic to Hard and thrashy! I will keep my ears peeled for when you release your EP! Try adding more Cactus/Cacti and see if that helps stop the sliding. If that doesn't work I would repurpose them. If you eventually make a flyer turn the roof into a flight pad.

By the way, saws work on ember trees so you can do it that way. I think the vacuum pump can suck up the embers too. so you can fully mechanize it. Also of course, four cactuses are not enough you probably just need more.

Nice job on the music! Big fan already, love instrumental metal. Also, I'd say leave the pistons until you need them but knowing you you'd forget that you have them so maybe just take them off and decorate the inside with the shactuses

Try adding more cacti to make them into a bar across the front and across the back and connect the pairs of pistons together with them. this will greatly increase the friction blocks in contact with ground and will still pull up under the bumpers when in motion.

The things that lift an RV are called **jacks** (not brakes) and they are meant to level-out the vehicle. If you want to stop it from moving you need **wheel chocks** which are placed behind/in-front of the wheels that are rolling.

You can get your wedges in warehouses. They´re part of the stairs next to the elevators. Go back to a warehouse you already looted and get as much as you need. You´re gonna need explosives (maybe a glowbug steup for some glow would be a good idea, you don´t need to keep it), but there´s wedges in survival.

On top of the roof you could make a scrap throne. A throne made out of random pieces of scrap (and a low level seat to sit in and to complete the look) it could be your mobile throne. Or you could put a toilet there and joke with the throne bit.

I think you should try putting the cacti on suspensions so they DON'T lift your vehicle, and therefore let the wheels come in contact with the road. My reasoning is that combining your wheels' and your brakes' friction would considerably slow down your vehicle's movement.

For the roof use the pistons from the cactus brakes to make an expandable helipad for a future flyer that can be welded to your base.

Maybe if you were to add two more sets of brakes in the middle of the hank tank, the overall weight is in the middle and adding brakes there should help the problem. Also if that doesn’t work, maybe make a bus style door, where it comes in then pulls to the side.

I like this series that much. I tried to do a rebuild of Hank Tank for a steering types test, emulating the weight distribution with concrete blocks. The steering I built can help with avoiding rollovers and doesn't drop my frame rate. But, it will start getting issues with high speed turns if over loaded on weight. That's even with all 4 steering bearings. It has a great turning circle, especially if you're already moving a little. (edit) Just heard those song snippets at the end... WOW man... Both of those were great!

Loved the music. Lighter seems to be my flavor, but they're both very good. And for the vehicle put a wheel launcher to get to the tippy top of the warehouses.

i think the cactus brakes were an interesting idea. im not sure if their are ways to improve them such as a larger cactus pad or something. also for the top of your creation it looks like you have so much space you could really do alot with it. i feel like it would be a cool place to store logic gates in the floor kind of for the design and use the gates maybe for a turret system with sensors or for some inner moving parts like when you built your castle and you had random moving stuff in your workshop. the RV looks really cool rn btw and the music was good too.

Scrapman, the weight of your vehicle along with gravity and how Scrap Mechanic calculates its physics might be causing the friction created by your 4 cacti to not be enough. You could potentially try adding additional cacti so that the friction they generate is enough to overpower the downwards force caused by gravity and your vehicle's mass. You could do this without making additional pistons and therefore component kits by simply having a connection "platform" attached to the piston instead of directly attaching the cacti to the pistons.
