I'm convinced that Cartoon Network wanted this to fail. Putting it ridiculously early on Saturday, next to no promoting, and the fact the show's pacing was rather slow. The fact that they were trying to push toys to children when the show was written for teens and adults. I'm not saying kids would not like it, just that it would not keep every kid's attention, adults on the other hand, would be more likely to stick. This show aimed too high too fast. I also think using more well known villains first, to grab a bigger audience, than get more vague villains for other seasons. I LOVE what they were trying to do with it. It was different, cgi was weird, but I got used to it. A damn shame it never got the chance to shine. I truly believe it could have gone places. My favorite line in that series is one of the most profound I have ever heard in a Batman show! When Bruce and Tatsu are in a restaurant and he is naming off every crime going on at that moment. Tatsu asks him "do you ever turn that crime radar off?" His response is "I don't...I can't..." I have NEVER heard a line that describes Bruce Wayne's perception of the world so perfectly!

i think cartoon network was just trying to kill action shows in general on their network at that time. 2013-2014 were like the last years actual action cartoons aired on CN. everything since then has been slice of life CalArts style shows with maybe some action elements. Action cartoons are dead on network television even the DC shows on Cartoon Network now specifically are not action shows (Teen Titans Go, DC Superhero Girls)

If you just make Pyg a mind controlling villain, you’ve almost completely neutered what makes Pyg one of Batman’s most deranged rogues. Same, my guy! I particularly liked Anarchy (Which Browntable said is a Joker knockoff, which I 100% disagree with) and one of my favorites has to be the episode where Harvey dent has an entire small army of SWAT teams after Batman and Katana, and they’re slowly fighting their way and outsmarting them. It really showed their resilience and their drive, and it gave a lot of character to Harvey, who we haven’t seen from the angle of using cops and corrupted politician’s to go after Batman.
@adammyers73833 жыл бұрын
@@master0fthearts894 I actually think it was a good idea to take it slow for a bit-maybe didn’t have to be quite as long, but still-because it’s a pretty stark departure from what’s familiar. The closest was The Batman as mentioned, but even that kept a semi-similar dynamic between Bruce and Alfred to help smooth the transition between the DCAU and the new status quo.
@master0fthearts8943 жыл бұрын
@@adammyers7383 You mean in the earlier seasons to ease the fandom into all the changes? Sure. I mean, I think that it was well done with Alfred, because he was still somewhat of a mentor/teacher to Bruce, so as it showed that he was also a badass, it wasn’t hard to believe. From what I can tell from other fans, though, Katana took a whole while to get used to. I think that they could’ve spent some episodes focusing solely on Batman as Bruce, and it introducing a few subtle changes, and build it up until finally going into the massive changes of replacing Robin with Katana, or showing that Dick Grayson is out there, and she’s the 2nd apprentice. Like, the whole episode that with Humpty Dumpty, talking about how all of them are partially responsible for the person being somewhat falsely accused in court? (Or something like that, can’t remember) I loved that episode, but that series of events, introducing Katana, Batman and other characters- that should’ve been episode one, so it doesn’t immediately show her as Robin’s replacement and the fandom gets time to get to know her without freaking out that they got rid of Robin. Those changes weren’t nearly as much as an issue for me, because I accepted way earlier on that it’s a different interpretation of Batman, it was nice to see the changes and angles that characters were re-examined, and the changes were some pretty interesting takes. Also, I like how it was willing to experiment with some of the lesser-known rogue galleries. I mean, sure, it didn’t always land (Professor Pig and Toad) but I like the effort to try an bring the characters to the forefront, success or no.

It may have used complelty new villains but when you look at it, it really used a lot of them in very similar ways to older villains. Pr Yg was compellty chaged from his original comic design to be more of a poison Ivy meet the mad hatter whimsical ecoterrorist. Tobias Whale was pretty much used as a Penguin/Ruper throne analog, Magpie was a crazier catwoman and, possibly the boigest of them all, Anarky might as well have been the joker, etc... Ti be clear I'm not saying they were carbon copies or bad villains (I quite enjoyed them) but defontively there was kind of a 'mold' it still aprlty conformed too. I'm not arguing it's not it's own show, but it really feel like it tried to be closer to older show like BATS without being it at sime times and the results were .. very mixed. Jsut my opinion, of course, but It remind me a bit of what happened with "The Batman", first two deasons tried to do something different (not great but different) but then by the thried and especialu fourth seasons, things were pretty back on track for being your usual batman show.

Great video! I liked that you explored the show’s disastrous airing schedule. Just a couple of thoughts: 1. I think Penguin’s photo was supposed to foreshadow his role in season 2. There’s multiple hints of his presence in the series, including a news ticker. The news ticker is used in the show to hint characters like Tobias Whale, Marion Grange, and Harvey Dent before they appear. 2. The “lack of toy sales” is due to a lack of toys period. Mattel refused to make toys for both this show and Green Lantern because they wanted to make their own Batman toys and because the GL movie and its merch bombed, respectively. Only Young Justice had bad toy sales, so that’s why it was scrapped. Thanks for giving this show a shot!

This version of Bruce Wayne is the quintessential one in my opinion (honestly he rivals the comic version) he was absurdly intelligent he routinely got the best of his villains for example rather than outfight Ra's he stalled for time and outsmarted him, he figured out Anarky's motives in his first interaction (also in a comic he easily saw through Anarky's disguise in a two minute conversation with him at a party. He said that Anarky used four different accents, he wore shoe lifts in order to create a manufactured limp and he took the alias of 'Robert Catesby' the real name of Guy Fawkes). Not to mention he effortlessly broke down Slade's plan with a keen attention to detail. Sidenote: I still use some of Bruce's quotes he said in the show like when he said "Train your mind to let your instincts tell you when something is wrong." Or "Think the problem all the way through before you decide on a course of action."

Exactly the same thing happened with one of my favorite modern cartoons, Generator Rex. Unlike Beware the Batman it gained decent viewings but CN ended up canceling it early due to it being a really expensive show to make as it was a detailed 2D animated cartoon (the downfall of most action cartoons and the action genre in general) and the decline in toy merchandise is what put the nail into the coffin. It really does sucks how most shows are canceled and shelved cause of the poor toy sales. The problem was that this version of Anarky had almost nothing in common with the usual comic book Lonnie Machin, and was made to resemble the Joker both physically, thematically ("I'm your opposite, Ying Yang, blabla") from a voice perspective (with Wallace Langham going for a Mark Hamill type voice acting) and a psychopath. They made the same mistake in *Arrow* , where Anarky/Lonnie Machin was played by Alexander Calvert (seasons 4&5) and looked the part, but was a plain psychopath instead of an anti-villain, well-meaning anarchist. I still prefer the "Arrow" adaptation compared to the "Beware the Batman" one, but I wish that some day we'll get a real Lonnie on screen... He was pretty good/faithful in "Arkham: Origins" for example.

I have two really strong memories about this show. The first is the entire episode "Twist" (the one where Deathstroke's whole deal is revealed), where like 50 little things suddenly snap into place as Batman and the audience suddenly realize how much they've been played. One of the best episodes of that nature that I can recall. The other memory is the prison fight between Batman and Killer Croc. Specifically how Batman not only wins by being smarter, but that the show doesn't have a character come out and explain what he did - you get the camera showing Batman's POV to see what he notices, and then the show trusts the audience to be smart enough to understand. Not much media has that much faith in the audience - especially not children's cartoons.

The animation can be off-putting at times, but since it focused a lot on Batman's detective work, it lead to some great stories. I also loved how it used lesser known villains. The villains might have been reskins of the more well known ones but they were very fun to watch. My favorites were Professor Pyg and Mr. Toad and Humpty Dumpty. I am genuinely very interested in the universe it takes place in. I am also convinced that Green Lantern: The Animated Series and this show share the same universe. Maybe there could have been a crossover. Or maybe there could have been a spinoff series about The Outsiders. I think the biggest problem was Cartoon Network. CN barely promoted the show and made it seem like it didn't exist. Instead we got Teen Titans Go!, a show that treats kids like they are stupid. However, I am very happy we got Young Justice back.

Did you hear about some of the plans they had for Season 2? Besides Two-Face and Penguin, they were going to expand the Outsiders with Cyborg and someone who looks like Red Arrow. Tatsu was also going to become Nightwing, while Barbara was going to become Robin.

I’ve always adored this series. I almost didn’t watch it because I KNEW it would get canceled. Despite being right about that, I’m happy I watched the show. I talk about it relatively frequently & always make it a point to acknowledge, like you did, that the series doesn’t find its stride until halfway through the season. But after that, things really ramp up for the better. I thought it was interstate how the Bruce & Alfred relationship seemed to take from the Earth One comics, where Alfred was more active & Bruce was more green. Speaking of green, I also had always hoped to see BTB crossover with GLTAS. Alas, it wasn’t to be.

This was such a unique show from other Batman iterations I loved it. My childhood were The Batman (2004) and Beware the Batman series. This show was very different from others in its concept, and I liked it, it's actually good. I just hate it when people don't give new things/ideas a chance (then rant how it's the joker again, bcz you want to see him every time, this was a breath of fresh air, a unique concept and it was executed pretty well). I won't say I'm some expert of highest degree on Batman, but I know a lot about Batman from so many comics, movies, shows and even games, have watched everything, and I in my position can definitely say this was a good series. Started out decent but interesting and later got very good & interesting. I just wish we got more seasons of this.

One of the darkest trivia about this show is it was announced around the time that Dark Rises was coming out, then the Aurora shooting happens in which a deranged man enters the theater in the middle of screening and started shooting. as a direct result of this WB decided to change the look of every single gun in the show to look less realistic, in some cases they look like water guns or space guns.

I love the Beware the Batman it's so unique and fresh. Batman - a young angry Batman. Very similar to the new Robert Pattinson Batman. The Bat Design I think was intentional to make him look more like a creature like the Schumacher Suits in the 90s (minus the nipples). This Batman is to be actually FEARED for a change. Alfred - an M-I6 agent that was sent after Ras Al Ghul (awesome). Looks like Jason Statham. Katana - an actually useful partner rather than a sidekick that was once CIA, ironically after the same target as Alfred and she is his God-Daughter. Gordon - same guy we know but a more by the book character. Dent - An enemy of the Batman rather than ally and actually closer to Mr. Reeves from Mask of the Phantasm. A realistic take on a DA. Anarky - a guy who is just out to cause chaos for chaos sake. No big motive or connection to anything. He is what he is. Pyg and Toad - Animal Extremists with a Mad Hatter style flair - Manhunters - Basically Jason Bourne's "Treadstone" Program for DC. League of Assassins - Same type of animal as we have seen but with far more edge and politics. They want to control rather than destroy. Beware the Batman is FAR more adult than kids cartoon. Granted their guns look like toys but the maturity in themes and story telling rival TAS and in fact get much darker than TAS. Well worth the watch and the animation grows on you quick. BTB is getting S2 on HBO this year due to fans wanting more.

If you were paying attention to the show at the time you would have seen how bad they mismanaged it. Like it first aired at Saturday morning on cartoon network. Then I believe after 6-8 episodes they took it off for a small hiatus. Which they actually ended releasing episodes 8-13 on DVD first which was stupid. Then after a couple months of hiatus the show returned on Adult Swim at like 1 am for the rest of the series. My honest opinion on the show is that it had potential for sure but people were turned off by the animation to even give it a chance and cartoon network managed it so poorly. It also released around the time cartons were turning into 11 minute segments rather than a full 22 minutes which is what this show ran for. It really pissed me off that this released alongside teen titans go which actually lasted for a long ass time

You need to watch the entire series of Young Justice and review it. It’s quite excellent and it’s very much a big picture show. The show was definitely setting up for "Batman and Outsiders", with Metamorpho and Manbat, but got cancelled before we could continue. However, I overall enjoyed it. Thought Anarky being the villain rather than the Joker was a good choice as well and introducing some of the "Arkham Asylum:Living Hell"characters like Magpie, Lunkhead and Humpty Dumpty was a neat choice. Top two favourite villains have to be Pyg and Toad though. I know Professor Pyg is the opposite of his rendition in the comics(though seriously, you could never get the Dollotrons past the censors), but I liked the pair a lot, with their eco terrorist leanings and Toad's sonic croak.

I used to collect Batman and the Outsiders when I was a kid. I liked the fresh take on Batman. Frankly, I'm sick of seeing the same villains over and over again. Anarky was a good change from Joker. I'm happy where the series ended because the story is finished. The overall arc is that Batman learns he needs people and he can't be an island. The debate is introduced in the very first episode between Alfred and Bruce. Finally, I recommend watching it in Spanish with subtitles. I'm learning Spanish and the actors voices are much better than the English ones, imo. Anarky in Spanish actually makes him seem gay and adds an extra dimension to his character.

Great to see this review. I would take issue with the assertion that Anarky is a discount Joker. Anarky is really quite different. First, Anarky is a physical threat, being highly skilled in hand to hand combat. Second, he’s far more collaborative. He makes extensive use of various surrogates, and he recruits the criminally inclined for various purposes. Third, there’s a strong suggestion that, whoever he is under that mask and hood, he’s either powerful (in his civilian life) or at least, believes that he is. Finally, he seems to have a over-arching goal and something of a long-term, albeit flexible, master plan. I found him much more compelling than you apparently did, and I genuinely regret never getting to see what they had in mind for him. And to that last sentiment, applied now to the show in general, I join your disappointment in its termination. And while I respect and even agree with many of your critiques, I actually really enjoyed it from the first episode. Anyway, this video is just more of the same from you…as in, a rewarding and fun way to spend some time. Nice job, as always.

I have a theory that as the show went on, we would slowly see anarky fit the role of joker more and more, eventually becoming the character all together. What do you think of this theory?
@sfkeepay2 жыл бұрын
@@Me-wx1mt, I don’t know if that’s what they had in mind for the character, BUT I can see great narrative potential in your idea! Maybe constantly being defeated by Batman makes Anarky less and less mentally stable. After all, he already seems to be somewhat disconnected from reality. (along with not showing any moral restraints on his behavior and having delusions of grandeur/narcissistic personality and anti-social personality disorders.) I know Browntable didn’t seem to like Anarky very much, but I actually did. I enjoyed his schemes and his approach. I even got off on his costume and really enjoyed his personality and expressions. And again to your idea, the unbridled way he would often speak, the humor he would use…they do seem like he could be on the edge of becoming something even darker and more dangerous. It’s a plausible (and novel) origin story for the Joker.

So basically they made Katana a sassy Nightwing who almost stole the show, Alfred a grumpy big brother who kicks ass but in a way that doesn’t feel appropriate, and all the villains are just re-skinned, barely different Chinese knock offs of already established, more popular villains. Basically it should have been about Katana with Batman as a leader and mentor ship role, the Butler should have been a different character besides Alfred, and the villains should have been more unique and original. Got it. However, it started to lift off in the 2nd half and looked promising near the end, implying a 2nd season would be consistently better aaaaaaand it’s gone.
