Was waiting for someone to talk about this show for years I LOVED this show. You touch upon how what stopped you and many others from loving it was just how depressing and brutal this show was from episode 1 and ends the way it does. I've always been a fan of experimental stuff and as kid this challenged the way I viewed film and television shows. It was ahead of its time and this might sound edgy, but I've always loved and appreciated stories that end tragically, just because of the circumstances of the writing. Not everything needs to have an optimistic resolution and it's a viewing experience that is so rare - it makes it memorable I'm gonna rewatch this now

It’s strange to me that of all Spidey adaptions, this one somehow got the closest to adapting the original personality Lee/Ditko Peter had. He acts almost EXACTLY like Ditko era Peter, just in a circa 2003 context. It’s even weirder since this is a loose adaption of both the Raimi movie AND had Bendis on the project, both of which overhauled Peter’s personality to varying degrees in his early years. Most modern adaptions nowadays make early Peter more of a Hufflepuff-like wallflower, but in truth, he was the ultimate Ravenclaw, which I think people sort of forget. To be honest, for as influential and important those early years were, almost all adaptions in the high school setting or early Spidey have completely ignored the emotional complexity of early Peter Parker, opting more for the conventional “beat down but never giving up” attitude. The truth is, Peter Parker falls HARD, and is only ever able to get back up after being at his lowest. Is he an optimist? No, but he’s not pessimistic either. He’s an idealist who’s just depressed and guilty, trying to do right. He makes the most of what he can, but the key here is that Peter is far from morally perfect. He has to grow into being more warm and accepting of the world around him, and that includes his persona. Spidey is a symbol of optimism in those he inspires, in the people he saves. Peter is and has never really been an optimist like most modern adaptions sort of go. He has to flirt with the despair before getting back up. He’s human. As simple as those early stories were, Peter Parker’s attitude was the most complex at that time. He was an almost overly mature young man forced to grow up too fast, and he had quite a chip on his shoulder.

That’s thing with the mcu Spider-Man they tend to lean towards him being a “kid” hero who’s more lenient towards other heroes, when in actuality his the complete opposite. Spider-Man is a teenage loner who has to burden himself with responsibility to take care of his aunt, balance school, and fight crime as Spider-Man. In his early days he had a massive anger which iteration tend not to get into (for whatever reason) He was viewed as a wildcard. An individual couldn’t be trusted, also an individual with a warrant for his arrest. Spider-Man would also frequently get in front of heroes and insult them and not take any of their shit. I remember on time (which is kinda ironic) he got in Ironman’s face and told him out of all the avengers he “ticks” him off the most. That goes to show his relatability. Also he was a massive loner he couldn’t tell anyone his identity. I hate in these Spider-Man movies nowadays he has a best friend who he plays legos with lol, and a bootleg mj who knows his identity. Man I forgot how dark this show was. My dad bought me the DVD release when I was young and I've rewatched it countless times. Thanks for bringing this up. I honestly loved this take on our boy Spidey. It was interesting and refreshing. And now I can only look at The Amazing Spider-man 2's Electro as a bland imitation of this show's rendition of Electro.

I saw only a couple episodes, like the one with Harry’s girlfriend, The Electro episode that was *really* dark, and some other one. I didn’t see much, but what I saw I really loved. I love Spectacular Spider-Man way more, but this is one of the most unique, bold, and experimental shows there is. And if there was a tier list of Spider-Man shows, this one would be rated pretty high.

I remember watching the party episode from this show as a kid and ended up feeling pretty bad for electro. It was way darker than the Spider-Man shows I was used too, it was on kabillion network.
@ninjanibba42593 жыл бұрын
Yeah I rewatched this last year and it still mostly holds up, most of the villains and side characters were made up for this show and they fit the narrative, very creative But yeah everything you said was true and even tho it’s dark, it’s addicting and has purpose, I notice that Spectacular borrows some elements of darkness and makes it hopeful in the end most of the time, and MJ is actually live in this one lol so that’s always a plus The theme is a banger

I remember watching this show as a kid. I watched it on Kabillion and whenever my older brothers saw me watching it, they would freak cause that channel wasn't for kids. I too remember enjoying the show for its mature yet enjoyable nature. The 3D aspect is, what I think, caught my attention the most, alongside the characters and whatnot. It was also the first time I had ever seen Peter Parker in College and there were characters like Turbo-jet and Talon that I had never seen before. The show was a good nuance from what I usually had seen or expected from any Spider-Man story; they took risks.

I've watched this show when I was 9. To this day, I still remember the Party episode; but I've honestly never noticed how dark this series was before. Maybe because I was used to watching dark media back then (meant for kids or not), or perhaps it's because the network it aired censored a lot of stuff (this is what you get when you air a cartoon meant for older audiences in a CHILDREN'S BLOCK...)

I remember I was 5 or 6 when my uncle got me this animated series DVD, while it also freaked me out in certain aspects as a kid, I also loved a lot of moments as well. MTV was probably the reason the show was more mature, but it was also the reason why it got cancelled on a cliffhanger ending. It's crazy though that for a popular character, Spidey has 3 shows that ended on cliffhangers. I was shocked rewatching the 90s one and found out he never found MJ.

I really love this show. I believe I’m the same age as you, so my experiences were relatively similar. The way I found out about it was through the volumes-I think I had High Voltage Villains and possibly The Mutant Menace. Yes, the Electro episode FREAKED ME OUT, but I was also mesmerized by the story, tone, visuals, and ambiance-well, now that I think about it, that was basically my whole experience with this series. I never saw all of it, only the episodes in the volumes I had and maybe others online, but yeah, I wish we could’ve gotten more. And yeah, now that you point it out, the art style is very similar to that of the Ultimate Spider-Man game-I knew of the history and BMB’s contributions, but I never put the two together. One of the things that still gravitates me to it is the visual style and the setting-I miss the early 2000s techno hip shit 😭

I rarely see this show talked about, so it's interesting to know that people have similar stories of A) Being too young to watch this show because your parents assumed it was safe and B) Being traumatized because the first episodes you saw were the Electro's ones. Honestly though, while the show isn't perfect, for an early 2000's 3D show it surprisingly holds up pretty well. Something about the art-style in this show has always tickled my brain.

It went over my head as a kid (primarily for as you said -- the intensity, plus the super confusing finale), but after rewatching it (coincidentally back in february, wow,) I can say it's honestly one of my favorite animated series. Literally watching the Lizard episode alone gave me chills for how they staged it -- this is easily the most cinematic animated series I've ever seen, even with the at times clunky animation style.

I think you did an amazing job summing up what I loved and disliked about the show. I believe this is a really good show because it was a darker themed Spider-Man show that we haven't seen before but I think that ultimately played to his downfall because at the end of the day Spider-Man has dark stories but he is a optimistic character and no episodes felt kind of optimistic at all
