Hey Linda, I know your comment is written with the best of intentions (and much of it is lovely), but please don't portray those who have cancer as being engaged in a 'fight'. In doing so, you contribute to a predominant narrative regarding cancer, in which the disease and the afflicted are 'fighting' it out. Inevitably, this means there are 'winners' and 'losers'. When somebody 'loses' their 'fight' with cancer, that implies that in their death, cancer has 'won' and they have 'lost'. I know that you'll agree with me that Dan isn't a loser. There are no winners and losers when it comes to cancer; nor is there a fight.

This is so sad. My son fought the cancer and Mayo tried everything and did all they could. He was given 2-3 months. He lived 6 weeks of detioration. Finally, he couldn't even swallow liquid morphine. Know my friend, that you have changed the lives of thousands of people including me. And I will live my life remembering your valuable lessons and having fond memories of a person I don’t know, I was always afraid of death despite being religious however upon working in a carehome (which I simply did inspired by your videos) I’m beginning to understand that it is courage and determination that will make the next step easier. And I hope that the reality of the situation doesn’t break you. Upon speaking to some residents that are older than 80 in the carehome a man told me recently several weeks before passing away from what turned out to be progressive heart disease when I asked him how to beat the fear of death. He said something on the lines of this. “You can only loose to death when she meets you at your doorstep, you don’t meet her with a smile.” “It’s courage and determination to meet the unknown that will make that step easy, even exciting.” He told me. Of course I didn’t believe him and I still have the fear. Good luck with what awaits you in the time you have. And know that I will always remember you because you have at least a tiny bit, changed my life.

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in August 2021. He went through so much pain and so many treatments but he was slowly improving. Unfortunately that changed this August. An uncaught mass damaged his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down which resulted in an invasive surgery that took him off his cancer treatment. Within weeks the cancer spread everywhere in his body. I'm learning how to say goodbye to him in the next couple of weeks. He is only 55 years old and he did not have the best life, but hopefully he can now rest in peace. I am glad I remember Tom's story from years ago, it gives me strength to smile and give my dad a proper goodbye.

Yesterday I saw a clip from Claire Wineland and it was raw honest. She described what dying was like for her and two things that stuck out and will stay with me forever are: 1. People got it completely wrong when they say there is a right way to go and this is to accept the unchangeable. WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GO PEACEFULLY because we love life and cling to it and grieve when we realize we are losing it. Period. 2. When it finally happens you feel like a helpless young child again and you need to feel that you are not alone and your mum holds your hand. I myself stayed with dying family members and from two the last intelligible word was Mum. So maybe this is universal; make sure someone dear to your heart is always next to you and will find the strength for you both to hold your hand and you will feel that you are not alone on this hardest and unwanted road of all. If wishes were horses.... So sad to have to hear this. I am sorry if you feel this comment is unsolicited advice. I took the "risk" in good faith and emotional involvement, even though I don't know you in RL. X.

I think the death with dignity act AKA assisted suicide should be an option FOR ALL. "We are not supposed to go peacefully". That is a broad statement. Many are in SEVERE pain and the quality of life is not worth living when the inevitable will surely occur no matter how much you want to fight it. Many do not want their faces to be unrecognizable as a side effect of the drugs like my gpa had. It can take their dignity and many do not want that to be the last thing people, including their own children to remember them as. Religion is the only disease stopping such progress. We allow our pets to go peacefully but not ourselves. It is a shame. I hope Dan can have the best quality of life that he has left. He is a hell of a guy.
