The Capeverdean Origin of

The purpose of this video is to reveal the origins of Papiamentu from Capeverdean or Kabuverdianu, the oldest creole language in the world namely the Santiago dialect of Cabo Verde aka Cape Verde.
Using the historical method alongside the linguistic works to dispel the old paradigm of Papiamentu being a Spanish based creole. Papiamentu/Papiamento is at it's core a Portuguese based language according to the eurocentric model.

Thank you for a phenomenal informative video. My husband and I experienced how similar Cape Verdean and Papiamentu are. We were studying at the University of Arizona from 1984-1988 and were speaking Papiamentu at the University with each other ,when a couple of students asked us where we were from because they could follow us but still found that our language had Spanish influences. Turns out they were students originally from Capo Verde. We became friends and we and the Cape Verdean students kept being amazed by not only the similarity in the languages we spoke but also the culture. So they spoke Criollo with us and we answered back in Papiamentu and we could follow understand each other flawlessly. It was a true cultural exchange for all of us. I lived, studied and worked in the Netherlands, the United States, the Dutch Caribbean Islands and speak: Papiamentu, Sranan Tongo (my parents are from Suriname) Dutch, English and Spanish.

You are very welcome, Donate! That must been an awesome experience. I remember being 17 years old asking why nobody besides the ABC Islands speaks Papiamentu and that lead me to a deep rabbit hole. I really enjoy hearing these stories. The funny thing is Most linguists are skeptical of Papiamentu speakers being able to talk to Kabuverdeanu speakers as there a time and space distance. I think ABC creole comes from Brazil, it makes more sense, the cape Verde islands where unhabited initially and had very few people there like less than 1000 people in 1600.

The peoples of Cabo Verde and the ABC islands are more closely related genetically and culturally as viewed through the Upper Guinea Linguistic Branch.

My family is from Brava in Cabo Verde… I did a research paper on some of the history back in 2014 and had a hard time finding this level of detail on the relationship w the Dutch and Netherlands. Also we visited Aruba around 2012 and were speaking Cape Verdean kriol to the natives who spoke papiamentu and had fluent conversations! Such a small (f’d up thanks to colonizers) world

The Cape Verdan President came to NYC in Brooklyn and he understood what we spoke in Papimento. Arubans in return didn’t understand him. We know this information already.

Thanks for sharing that. Yes I am aware of the partial intelligibility. It’s not surprising really. My response to that is that Papiamentu speakers use open Spanish sounds/vowels. And Kabuverdianu speakers have closed Portuguese sounds/vowels. For example, the Portuguese can understand Spanish better than vice versa. We got to remember that Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba are in sphere of influence of the Spanish language. And they haven’t had major Portuguese influences since the 1670s.

Great and fascinating video. Shouldn't some more attention be paid to the coincidence of the time that Dutch had been kicked out of Brazil and the increased settlement in the Dutch Antilles? These new settlers, a lot of them Sephardic Portuguese Jews, took with them their "Portuguese" speaking slaves, who, most likely, spoke a Portuguese similar to that of Cape Verdian. One could then argue that a lot of the people of Curaçao are descendants of Brazilians.

Thank you! Appreciate that. The reason for the exclusion of that info. is a two-parter. 1. The video would be pretty long for my pretty new audience I believe. 2. The impact of those specfic Africans from Brazil has been overestimated according to the latest linguistic research. And even if they had a major impact. They would have been more of an adstrate influence rather than foundational. I recommend picking up ''The Upper Guinea origins of Papiamentu'' by Bart Jacobs. In that book he delves into the sound arguments for the Capeverdean origin and also lays out the distinct Afro-Portguese language families.

there is Papiamentu & Papiamento. you can compare it with the spanish language we speak the same language but some different words/slangs/accents. Even some people think we talk Dominican-spanish. Papiamentu is spoken on 🇨🇼Curaçao🇧🇶Bonaire Papiamento is spoken on 🇦🇼Aruba

WOULD LOVE TO BE EDUCATED: I had a conversation with someone the other day about Papiamento. He said it is intelligible with LADINO, which is the ""creole"" Spanish/Portuguese/ HEBREW language of Iberian Sephardic Jews. I said that's very interesting because I've actually learned that it is intelligible with KRIOLU, the creole language of Cabo Verde. So now I'm very curious, because Jews from the Iberian Expulsion of 1492 did come to Cabo Verde when it was first founded! Perhaps Ladino is part of the making of Kriolu?!?

This is an incredibly detailed history of the slave trade my US education only alluded to in very broad strokes through islands I had previously only had vague notions of. And while the history of slavery is utterly shameful, the contuinuity of culture and language from the Wolof, Mandinka, and Fulani roots through Cabo Verde, onto Curacao and eventually to Aruba even under the influence of Portuguese, Sephardic Jewish, and Dutch dominance is absolutely astounding and wonderful. Obviously I would rather it have been by different means, but it's a history worth celebrating and highlighting.

Spain also ruled. lot of history on those 3 islands. they also say that we have the same indigenous as Venezuela, also people say we descendants of Brazilians. But I think the hole south, central, Caribbean America is a fascinating topic. Because it is so mixed with indigenous americans, Asians, Europeans, Africans, Oceanië. The dutch made a ugly place of it they killed all the indigenous in little Curaçao that is a small island of curaçao, was full of plants now it is nothing more than sand😢

That really does not make sense the population of capeverde in 1600 was less than 1000 people and not that much more in 1700 because of regular droughts. There was no capeverdean sent to ABC islands, it is muchore likely that portuguese speakers came from brazil

Capeverdean creole is not the origin of papiamento, the similarity is because of the original population of abc islands were portuguese speakers from brazil. The Papiamento is just a mix of portuguese and senegambian languages and that is the same why it is similar
