"Ultimately ... if it brings you delight, then go for it" Exactly how people should be thinking about coffee.

I was literally in the process of typing this when I read your comment. I just saw a video the other day about why "most of the coffee you drink is OBJECTIVELY TERRIBLE" and it was so gd pompous and pretentious. Coffee is supposed to be a nice enjoyable beverage, not a strict discipline.

@@redspade96 i agree, i hated that video, but i also understand that chains like starbucks arent really dolling out quality coffee, but if it aint harmin no one who cares how someone likes their drink

It would bring me delight if I ever drank it. I find, with a takeaway cup, you tip the cup back causing the mixed milk and espresso to move through the foam and into your face. Then the foam and chocolate powder follow the cup into the bin.

But your taste changes. We used drink only instant coffee that i didnt realize was really sweet because we used to add so much sugar to it. Then tried drip coffee with just creamer and a bit of sugar and never went back. My family didn't like it tho because it was "bitter" but to me it is the best and i almost dont want the coffee to leave my tounge. It is a bit strong and the aftertaste of cream brings me to heaven.

This is amazing James!! Make more videos about coffee history 🙏 Would love to know why the Americas does drip and Europe mostly does espresso! Or why single origin has become the hot new thing over blends!
@michael.burman
@michael.burman 5 жыл бұрын
This isn't true though, for example in Finland the drip is the most common way to drink coffee (and with largest amount of coffee per capita.. it's not insignificant). I'm not entirely sure if espresso is anywhere the most popular option, but if it is, then that would be the southern European countries (Mediterranean). Not all of Europe.
@whil6473
@whil6473 5 жыл бұрын
Finland (and other nordic countries too I'd assume) actually does predominantly drip. I'm pretty sure this is the cause of the more traditional coffee made in a kettle (which James made a video of).
@ArielViera
@ArielViera 5 жыл бұрын
@@michael.burman You make an excellent point! I've been to Finland myself and absolutely loved their coffee, and that fact that free drip-coffee refills was the norm (unlike in my native NYC). Though throughout most of my travels in Western Europe and Mediterranean I have noticed that espresso is far more popular! To the point where they don't even serve filter coffee.

As an avid goer of Viennese coffee houses from when I briefly lived there, this delights me. I've been trying to experiment more with international coffee, but it takes a lot of going back through coffee history and getting a cultural context for drinks, not just recipes. This makes so much sense! There is one cafe I used to frequent that had a delicious cappuccino. But I struggle to get the same experience elsewhere since I moved away. They always served it as a 6oz drink with a double shot I believe.

The only thing missing is watching James make what he'd expect if he'd order a cappuccino! I tend to make a Jack-achino as in I have no precision on foam ratio and just steam the milk typically in the same manner and pour it in the mug with espresso. I do tend to add cinnamon but shaved dark chocolate would probably be good too!

Great video James! I am curious about the last part where you mention “bubbles so small that you can barely see them”. I thought that describes microfoam which goes on latte, while the kind of dry foam with larger bubbles that can be done without a steam wand gets used on cappuccino. Because I don’t have a proper espresso machine (I use a Bialetti Brikka and a handheld frother), this has always kept me from offering guests Latte instead, which they associate with a very silky microfoam. It seems I have more to learn about the various kinds of foam and crema.

Perfect James! I find peoples stubbornness to say that "some cafe/chart/barista/coffee person says a proper (any drink) must be made like ____" a bit tiring and frustrating at times. Where in reality there are so many factors from cup size, cup shape, have in/take away, number of "shots" (also vague and varies), amount of foam, (style of foam for those still doing dry capps) and whether it has chocolate. Though it doesn't help when people with a large following also feed this by posting charts themselves of how certain coffees "must" be made
