Used to love watching Geoff demoing on the Marshall stand at The Northern Guitar show at the UMIST in Manchester in the late 80s/early 90s. . Went year after year to get signed posters by Geoff and Jim Marshall. Remember his PRS and use of the JMP1. Got both his solo albums there. Great player and fab memories!

Geoff's backing tracks on the cover CDs with Guitar Techniques Magazine were very helpful to me in establishing myself as a Blues-Rock solo act in Australia. Mississippi Queen, Parisienne Walkways, The Hunter, I Can't Quit You Baby, All Right Now, and plenty more backing tracks that Geoff produced, weren't commercially available back when he did them, and as a result it made me kinda unique on the local Blues-Rock scene when I played them at every gig. So thanks heaps Geoff!! You're an amazing man!

I remember these too! I think one original track he did was called "Geoff's Blues" ... and I remember marvelling at the phrases, liquid licks, and subtle touches that reay showcased a precious talent. I wish at the time I'd had chance to see him live, but I was a skint teenager!

I saw Geoff Whitehorn for the first time in 1990 in a small club in Vienna with a maximum of 50 listeners. He introduced the latest model series from Marshall. I was so impressed that I immediately bought the CD "GEOFF WHO?" direct in the music club! A little later the CD “Geoff Whitehorn, Big in Gravesend”. The next time was in 1999 at the European Bike Week in Carinthia with "Never the bride", with the great "Nikki Lamborn". No matter whether he played with Paul Rodgers in Ohne Filter Extra in 1996 or Stairway To Heaven with the British Rock Symphony Orchestra, for me he is one of the best guitarists on the planet!

I've seen Geoff with Roger Chapman and the Shortlist on stage half a dozen times and he was one of my favorite guitarists in that era. He had a unique style, very tasteful, always playing for the song. And he has a great personality on stage, it was always fun to watch him. Great to see him still alive and kicking.

Geoff is a criminally underrated British guitarist, lovely bluesy playing style and feel. I notice his hands are shaking a bit these days tho - assume it's due to some age-related neurological disorder? Anyone shed any light on this? Sad to see, but pleased he's still at it! 🙏🤘

Wonderful session with Geoff, thanks Lee. He had the '57 on a stand on stage when Crawler played Babarells's in Birmingham back in the late 70's. Big boots to fill indeed, but on seeing, hearing and feeling Geoff's playing helped with our grief at the time. AC/DC were the support band that evening, what a night! Sail On Geoff... Great player.

Great interview! I had never heard of Geoff, it was a pleasure to get to know him a bit!! I bet he was a blast on a tour bus!! I fell out of my top bunk once, when I was sound asleep at 4am. The driver swerved to miss a hurd of deer. That's about the last time I slept on a tour bus!! If I did sleep after that it was due to over-libation. LOL I didn't break anything but I was really sore for days!! Cheers, --gary

Loved that. I think I'm about five years older than Lee, so his memories and references to music/culture when growing up, are (reasonably) similar to mine, including Geoff Whitehorn! Saw Geoff at guitar shows, and followed his articles in Guitar Techniques - still get lots of mileage out of 'Two Tone Blues' from the tenth edition (and only the second to include a CD!). Thank you Geoff and thank you Lee! 😎

Not many years ago, despite Geoff being very active at the time with various big acts, he played every Thursday at a pub near us in Crayford. It was great to see such a pro just having a blow through a small rig , an amp you could take on the bus, and he still sounded the business. Thoroughly enjoyed this chat, very entertaining.

I remember seeing Geoff doing a Marshall launch in the late 1980s, it was in Leeds, for the launch of the JCM900 series. It was a great day out 🙂👌

Geoff made an incredible contribution to Procol Harum that I'm sure he's unbelievably proud of and will be for the rest of his life. He was absolutely amazing in that band and I for one will always respect and admire him and his incredible talent. I will miss forever seeing Geoff obviousy love playing with Procol and Gary....The Denmark Procol Harum DVD that Geoff references has become THE definitive Procol concert of all time I believe, as it's quality and musicianship is amazing. He could play a $ 5 plastic guitar and make it sound incredible. He is a fantastic talented guitarist.

Wow what a great interview. I discovered Geoff when I was living in the UK and the Paul Rodgers "Now" record had just been released. That band configuration Paul had was one of the best bands since The Firm. As a young man I was reinventing how I played guitar and the inspiration I received from Geoff was part of that reinvention. I had a Marshall JCM900 and Les Paul, but in order to achieve a lot of the tones on "Now" I built a stereo rig consisting of a Digitech 2112, Marshall EL84 20x20 and two Marshall 1x12's. I could get those shimmering cleans, and transition to the Marshall "dig in" sound. My band performed several cuts from the Now record. I got to see Geoff with Paul at the Cambridge Corn Exchange and come hell or high water, with a 101 degree fever I took the tube into London to see them at Royal Albert Hall. I searched and searched the internet on what gear was used on Now, but no info was found. I have about a dozen questions for Geoff, perhaps you'll have him on again and discuss more of the tones he got on the Now record. The playing was amazingly brilliant on that record. Lots of soul and feeling mixed with a lot of good tone!

Captain, thank you for having Geof on board! :-) On Geof: I had never heard of him, but I have the "Live at the Union Chapel" DVD by Procol Harum, and Geof particularly impressed me. On jazz: well, there is the repertoire and there's the (in just one word) "format". If someone should insist in the instruments (including vocals) considered a separate property, I can see it that way. - Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing" tells me of a period in my life (in Amsterdam, the Netherlands), and I hadn't known that song until my co-founder of our short-lived rock group put it on our repertoire. We had met in that jazz club. (Anyone remembering the Joseph Lam Jazz Club around?) Among the other regulars were two members of a blues band. That band recently came to my mind as my own improvisations at home reminded me of two of their songs. On effects: I hadn't used a "real" guitar amp for a long time (if at all, depending on one's standards). For a few months, I have had a Marshall Code and a Boss Katana, so two amps with "the effects inside". I don't at all regret buying the (multi-)effect pedals I have, but I find myself hardly using them. On guitars: the two most versatile guitars I have are by Godin (in Canada). I had never heard of that brand, but in the early 90s I was rather into MIDI, and my then default music shop introduced me to the Roland GR-30 guitar synthesizer and a guitar that had the required "13-pin" stuff built in: the Godin LGX-SA. It features two humbuckers, but the pre-MIDI signals come from a piëzo bridge pick-up. The acoustic sound available from the piëzo really caught me. A year ago, I watched somebody demonstrate a Godin xtSA on KZbin. Again: great piëzo sound (apart from the HSH pick-ups), and I couldn't reproduce it on my LGX-SA (remember: without a "real" guitar amp). Purchased. In my perception, the Godin xtSA must be the most versatile guitar I have, with the LGX-SA in second place. I'm currently defaulting to the LGX-SA as my acting guitar. I currently find switching pick-ups (and a bit of Tone turning on the guitar) enough of a change of sound. - Additionally, I try to please (or "not-irritate") those in adjacent apartments by switching keys, styles and tempo.

His secret is not his ability to play- which is off the charts, no doubt- but that's not why he sounds so good without pedals. He sounds great without pedals because he's playing pentatonic blues on a high-end tube amp head and cab- which is exactly what ppl used to make this style of blues popular in the first place. I played this style of music for over 10 years, and I never used a single pedal. No one did, we didn't need them. I started getting into pedals when I stopped gigging and started playing at home by myself- and I love them. I can be a whole band all by myself now- and with a good DAW I can layer tracks and edit and all that good stuff- create anything I want. Technology doesn't take away from the experience in anyway- it enriches it, makes it more fun.

Love his playing, especially with Roger Chapman (Markthalle 1979 live is exceptional). The Eric Burdon Survivor record is almost a Geoff solo record, highly recommended!

Geoff gave me a few tips on guitar playing about 30 years ago at the old Tiger Music. I knew the square root of bugger all but he was a total all round good bloke.

I was in a band that played the West London Pub Rock circuit in the early ‘80’s and we regularly saw or supported Chuck Farley….a band that Geoff played in along with the likes of Simon Kirke (Free, Bad Company) and Steve Simpson (Meal Ticket, Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance). They were brilliant and Geoff’s playing was always stellar and impromptu guests like Mick Ralph’s would often turn up and sit in. Proving that it’s the player and not necessarily the gear, Geoff used to play through two little Roland Cubes wired in stereo, which inspired Stuart Ward to make him the original solid state Session amps. I have an early ‘80’s 2x10 Sessionette 75 which is actually a great amp….but doesn’t help me to sound like Geoff unfortunately. He would sound good plugged into anything…..
