This is why I respect Mick Thomson so much and hes one of the reasons Im going to learn how to play the guitar. Not only hes a beast of a guitar player, but also very humble and doesnt try to act as a high ego wannabe rockstar on interviews. Also hes a tech nerd that knows about gear and cares about it whether the quality, the specs and the price so it can allow us to have an amazing guitar at lower prices. Not like those guitar players that choose a guitar to be their signature without knowing about the purpose of its specs, and put a ridiculous price just to make money. Damn Mick is so underrated. Really nice interview Andertons! Maybe interview James Root (Jim Root) next time since hes also an amazing player like Mick, humble and cares about his gear too.

Oh how I wish that I were rich enough pretend to give a shit about tone wood. It's the placebo of the guitar world. I would surround myself with maple, ash, and rosewood and all of my water would have a tiny dose of CBD just in case that ends up being real. Jokes aside: Much respect to Mick Thomson for taking the time to give such detailed information about all of his guitars. It's really great to here successful musicians share their opinions even when I disagree with them.

I'm sure that when you've been doing this for as long as Slipknot has, the questions you get asked during press tours becomes samey. And for each time he gets a repetitive question, the amount of syllables in his answer gets shorter. I have an unfounded feeling that very few of those questions are about the gear, especially to this detail, because it can be very dry to non-gearheads, so it's not often he gets to geek about how his stuff. And obviously you have El Capitan sitting next to him, visibly over the moon from getting to do this interview, as opposed to your average reporter with a stoic set of questions.

"What I do is... I beat the shit out of my strings... just stretch the shit out of 'em. Then you lock them down and you've got your fine tuners". That is so refreshing to hear that from Mick. I've been playing Floyd Roses since the late 80's and it was a guy who roadied for GnR that told me that trick. Stretch and stretch and stretch again your new strings as you put them on. Then not only will you stay in tune (cos you do) you seldom break strings. Last string I broke was back in 1991. Not broken one single string since I started "stretching the shit out of 'em". But don't take my word for it. Listen to Mr Thomson.
@DrumGuitarDude
@DrumGuitarDude 4 жыл бұрын
So by stretching the shit out them means tunning it very high and let it sit? And afterwards tune it to the preferred pitch?
@dingdong6069
@dingdong6069 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrumGuitarDude No. Tune to pitch and then stretch them like crazy so they will inevitably go flat. Then re-tune them back up to pitch. Repeat as many times as you've got the strength/patience for. But don't be gentle! Really yank them hard up off the fretboard around the highest fret/neck pickup area. It settles them in so once you have them in tune and you've locked the Floyd Rose they'll pretty much stay in tune. I was taught this by a guy who has often roadied for Slash and I haven't (touch wood) broken a string since the early 90's using this method. Not one single string.
@ericsgarage9933
@ericsgarage9933 4 жыл бұрын
I do the exact same thing. I figured it out through trial and error but man my Floyds stay in perfect tune no matter what and I haven’t broken a string in over a year. Hell I have strings on an Ibanez that haven’t been changed in a year or so out of laziness and it’s still in perfect tune.

Mick and Jim honestly have some of the best signature stuff especially for metal players. Both of their guitars are made for them yet they don’t have crazy Slipknot symbols or anything. I love Jackson’s and I love Fenders so both Jim’s and Mick’s signatures are really cool. I want to own them all. Lol
