My favorite luffy and zoro moment is at skypiea. After enel zaps everyone, zoro included, and luffy shows up and says something to the effect of “How could this happen?! Zoro! How did this happen while YOU were here?!” There are many great moments though.

I loved that moment and infact something similar happened previously on Skypiea itself. When nami, zoro, Robin, and chopper are abducted, Luffy basically scoffs at the situation, and even tells Conis/Sanji not to worry since Zoro was with them. It sometimes irks me how every reactor ignores it since I am an absolute Zoro fan.

Luffy finding Zoro when he gets to Wano is their relationship summed up for me. Luffy hugs zoro in a way that he hugs Sabo. We've seen Luffy hug other people before but not with that kind of suffocating gusto. Luffy sees Zoro as a brother and if anything was to ever happen to Zoro, Luffy would be DEVESTATED and while he would be hurt to lose anyone else I don't think it would hurt as much as Zoro. And Zoro smiled one of the widest smiles he was SO happy to see Luffy and openly welcomed the suffocating hug. I don't think Zoro would do that for any other comrade. He would do that cool little closed smile and probably lower his head cause he's 2 kool 4 skool. Luffy and Zoro are basically real brothers at this point and it's my favorite relationship. I often think of the parallels of Zoro and Rayleigh and thinking of if Luffy dies early like Roger what would happen to Zoro and I 100% think Zoro would cry like Rayleigh remembering that first meeting. Now i've made myself sad.

i think the part that made me smile was that zoro smiled and like sabo(who got drenched with luffy's tears when they reunited.) didn't mind in the slightest,there was no moment of him getting annoyed by getting glomped.they are pretty similar with how blunt they can be(in zoro's case his brutal honesty and how he wants in a way his friends to be open and not hide secrets as he feels it could lose the crews focus.)and i like how pretty trusting and willing to let their lives be forfeit to protect each others desires,(that would be interesting to see a big crisis showing each of the strawhats loyalty/family love for each other and their captain sorta like movie 6 if it's conflict stuck.)

Zoro is not nor ever was the vice captain. Nami has more claim to that role than Zoro in terms of leading the crew and Usopp has more of a claim to it in terms of what was actually stated in the manga

One extremely underrated bond in the series has to be Zoro and Chopper. Zoro is kind of like an older brother to chopper who he looks up to. One really good example of Chopper learning from Zoro is a moment from Alabasta where they talked about why they joined the crew and what they thought of Luffy, I loved their dynamic in that moment and the interaction just felt so authentic. Another one is in the long ring long land arc when Zoro scolds Chopper for crying after being taken by Foxy's crew

The greatest show of trust between these two, in my personal opinion, was on Skypiea when Luffy was genuinly surprised that Eneru could beat everyone with Zoro there. That sums up just how much Luffy trusts Zoro's skills.

Another great moment is during the 3D2Y reveal where all the crew members were having existential reflections on their relationships with Luffy and his feelings EXCEPT for Zoro. He's the only character that threw himself into training immediately without a second thought.

nvmffs Zoro isn’t emotionless, he still argues with Sanji, calls out bullshit during fights, enjoys spending time with other crewmates, etc. He does worry about the crew but not in the New World. When was the last time he was worried about anyone? Because after 2 years, he has absolute confidence that his crew members wouldn’t be done in by their opponents. It’s either that he worries about everyone or that he’s not worried at all.

When luffy and others wants to accept usopp back in the crew, zoro refused. Usopp blatantly disrespects the captain by disobeying captain's order to leave merry, leaving the crew and challenge the captain to a duel, that was unacceptable. To have usopp back means luffy is no longer a man to be respected. And without respect for the captain, strawhats would collapsed from within. Zoro reminds luffy that luffy needs to be respected by the crew, even though it means zoro has to defy luffy's wish to accept usopp back. It was at this moment when i realise zoro is equal to luffy, not just his subordinate.

He's still his subordinate. Zoro is also the first mate and the person who directly has luffy's back while luffy has everyone elses back. Everyone in the crew is crucial but without Zoro luffy wouldn't have been able to even reach the other strawhats because of the 2nd strongest getting in his way.

I’ve seen people say Nami is the vice captain but I completely disagree. In most important situations Nami let’s her feelings take advantage of her( when she slapped Sanji). Remember when Zoro told Luffy , Chopper, and Nami that he wouldn’t accept Usopp until he apologizes ? Nami got all confident and tried to talk back to him until he told her to shut up.

Zoro is the right hand and Nami is the left hand for Luffy. So yes, both of them can be considered as the vice captain. He needs both of their support. Even Oda has stated that Luffy, Nami and Zoro are the main triggers of this series. They're the most important characters.

I disagree, I believe that luffy was the one who first showed the support first I mean during the baratie arc when zoro fought mihawk Jonny and yosakku wanted to intervene but luffy despite wanting to do so not only stayed behind but also held them back untill zoro fell showing not integrity but also respect towards zoro’s ambition and dreams. In fact mihawk praised this by saying that luffy and zoro are a wonderful combination

That's a good point, it shows that Luffy does actively care about Zoros dream even though Zoro falling to Mihawk meant a lower chance of defeating Krieg and a lower chance of recruiting Sanji. He knew what that fight meant to Zoro so he let it happen.

I love that you made this video. I’ve been saying how much this partnership is the nucleus of the Strawhats, especially when you add in Nami. You see moments of complete trust in the other like when Luffy hears Mr. 3 and company have captured Zoro, he says “Oh, then you’re doomed.” And vice versa when Zoro finds out they’ve “taken out Luffy,” he simply says “Oh yeah?” With a smile on his face. And the whole sea train business where they show faith in each other’s abilities. And when Luffy is fighting Aokiji and Sanji and Usopp get into a fight, Zoro is the one to stop it. And even Sanji respects that with Luffy missing, Zoro is in charge.

I found the encounter with Kuma at the end of Thriller Bark to be one of the most powerful scenes ever. And I would say it illustrated Luffy's sacrifices for Zoro. Zoro directly experienced the pain that Luffy had endured for his crew, and it nearly killed him. IMO, it took their bond to an entirely new level.

He's had no moments like Thriller Bark, he doesn't seem to do anything but run around aimlessly, he's so overpowered that there's no tension to any of his fights like there was in the pre-time skip, because of all that it just feels like he's just kind of there. Fishman Island he's about to poop on the main villain easy. Punk Hazard I don't even remember what he did other than walk around with Luffy, watch Sanji save Kinnemon, run away from the dragon thing, scold Tashigi and not contribute anything to the endeavors of the crew's time on there. Dressrosa he ran around aimlessly, delivered a message to Luffy I think, gut Pica easily, and tried to push back the bird cage. On Zou he talked some shit about Sanji, sliced some bees, sat away from everyone and didn't give a care, left to Wano. In Wano he's gotten lost, fought some people and had no challenge during any of those fights, now he's with everyone to guess what, go fight some more people. In all of his time post time skip he's had no character building/shining moments. Like I said, I don't dislike him, but I find him boring with the exception of his occasional comedy bits. I feel like him being trained by Mihawk was the worst thing. Now he's OP because he was trained by the world's best (makes sense) or if he loses it's a risk because it ends up not making sense or it makes Mihawk look bad in training chumps. It's like a no win situation in some way. Anyway, that's how I see him. If he's yours or anyone else's favorite character, I respect it.

@@forsterjurgen he got like scratched and he treated it like nothing, it wasn't a challenge for him. I say he's OP because he's had nothing to challenge him so far. Pre-time skip he pushed himself against Das Bones, Enel, the other guy on Skyliea, Kaku (giraffe guy), the pacifistas, Ryuma (kind of at least) but not once in the post time skip. It's not like he doesn't get a decent amount of screentime. He's gotten more than Robin but has still managed to not do much. I didn't bring up wholecake because he wasn't there. Still, Robin has done less than him but has still been more compelling by revealing new sides of herself in how much more she's open and quirky post time skip, Zoro is the same as he was pre-time skip just stronger. You don't have to agree with me, just wrote this all out just to show you that I don't think what I think for no reason haha. I respect your opinions.

Okie so My boyfriend is a one piece fanboy for 2-3 years He would always tell me to watch or read the Manga since I’m an anime fan like him His favorite character is zoro and He would always tell me “If i am zoro then you will be my luffy Ill be the one to swim for you when you need me to you’ll be the one to fly to me when I call for you I’ll be the one to slice the fog away from your path And you’ll be the one to remind me to strengthen what I have” There’s more but I’ll leave it at that This year (thanks to quarantine) I finally watched and caught up to one piece I finally understood what he meant and honestly I never felt so special in my whole life At first I thought he ships luffy and zoro together but he’s just pointing at the strong bond between the two I just wanted to share since it’s the appropriate video to tell this story Oh and Please do a video about misconceptions in one piece characters

Rectify kuma was fighting the straw hats, and luffy was being tortured or something and instead of letting luffy take all the pain by himself zoro let kuma take all the pain he did to luffy and out it on zoro. Pretty sure that what’s happened Atleast it’s been awhile since I’ve seen thriller bark

Thank you for making a video about these two! They are hands down my favourite pair in the series and yes they are an iconic partnership in fiction to me similar to Captain Kirk & Spock, Sherlock & Watson, Frodo & Sam etc. Yet I feel like many people maybe don't even notice the extent Oda goes to in order to show their bond. You mentioned a lot of the stand out moments in the series, but there's countless little moments where Oda puts in effort to show parallels and the relationship between the two. Like all the times they make the same expressions or say the same or similar lines, completely on eachother's wavelength. Or moments like when he made Bon Clay chose to transform into Zoro in Impel Down and Luffy's reaction to seeing him, or when they reunited after two years and in the back of a panel started having a conversation about what they did over the timeskip (I don't recall any other Strawhats having that conversation) or Luffy hugging Zoro in Wano, these completely unnecessary moments that make no difference to the story itself but Oda chose to put them in on purpose just to show their friendship. He even often creates similarities in some of their clothing designs and the very basic fact that red compliments green on the colour chart so even their designs are made in consideration of eachother (as an artist myself these things are not just done thoughtlessly with character designing). Oda puts all these small reminders throughout the series to make sure we don't forget about their relationship. Don't be surprised if theres going to be a big Zoro Luffy moment to rival Thriller Bark upcoming in the series or towards the end of the series because I feel like Oda has planning something for a long time with them.

The one of the powerful relationship among them can be seen in punk hazard zoro said luffy that we do not trained for losing. It was great to see that there were someone who has boosted himself for the sake of luffy, it was the particular scene when luffy started improving his haki. He felt that everyone struggled through for 2 years and he needs to make his skills over the top.

The fight that happened on top of onigashima rooftop shows how much thriller bark arc and sabaody archipelago arc affected Zoro, He understood that he needed to share his captains burden during fights and help as much as he can.

Luffy doesn't really listen to people, but when Zoro says something, most of the times he will listen. Zoro too, he doesn't like to take orders, but when Captain give his order, he will do it. Like when Luffy said don't fight with Bellamy, when Luffy asked him to take Nami back, and when he asked him to save Smoker. And how by just looking at each other, they already know what to do next.

Very well said. Also, notice that in Wano, Luffy and Zoro were always going off on their own doing their own thing. First is Zoro getting lost, then Luffy gets thrown into Udon. Second, is Luffy rushing ahead into the Fire Festival himself whilst Zoro gets lost again finding Luffy LOL.

When Zoro asks Luffy if that is okay while calling him King of Pirates, it's my favourite moment in the entire series. I see Luffy, Zoro and Sanji all being close and equals in powers, and what I love is even if Luffy and Zoro have this connect, Luffy also seems to have this connection with almost everyone else and them with someone else on the crew. The crew itself is family as they say and it's really shown, a video like this could be made for almost any Duo and that's what I truely love about the straw hats. It's built on Luffy and Zoros realtionship, which blends into every other relationship in the crew. Amazing video.

One more example that can easily be missed - At the very beginning of the Thrill Bark Arc, Luffy, Nami, and Sanji take an adventure to Brook's ship and when they return to Sunny, Brook is already a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. So Zoro asks "Why you two followed Luffy? Weren't you guys supposed to stop him from doing something stupid?".

i think one of the defining moments for zoro (when asking mihawk for help) was his realisation that none of his goals mattered if he couldnt protect his friends.. something he probably subtly learned from luffy. zoro swallowed his pride and realised that even if he attained the title of worlds greatest swordsman, it wouldn't have much meaning or weight if he lost the people he cared for. a stark contrast to when they first met and zoro said something like 'he wouldn't think twice about abandoning luffy or letting him die if it came between him and his dreams'.. we see what zoro can offer luffy in moments like water seven and thrillerbark and we see the way luffy offers help to the rest of the crew. but i think the one thing luffy helped zoro was giving his dreams a purpose beyond the dream itself (and the promise he made) that protecting his friends was a real motivation for achieving it at all..

To me they are a liitle bit like Star Trek's golden trio (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) and feature the pathos, ehtos, logos triade well (e.g. arguing on Zou after hearing of the deal with Sanji) only that Zoro argues more with Sanji, but he argues also with Nami a lot (esp. pre-ts).

Another prominent moment of first mate/vice captain Zoro is when he took on the whole lots of Baroque's members on his on, stating that he'd like them to let his crew members have a good rest and after he finished them off, he just sat down there on the roof all by himself to enjoy a bottle of rum. Despite his lacking sense for direction, his bold and straight forward attitude, his bickerings with Sanji and his seemingly carefree nature he's actually quite attentive when he needs to be and always silently looks out for his crew. On Whiskey Peak, while everyone else were partying without a care, he actually noticed that things were fishy so he stayed alerted while also letting the others have their fun regardless because he knows he'll be there to cover them. And already back then we could see that he was someone who doesn't need to tell anyone what he did for them, just like on Thriller Bark.

Great video. I really love their relationship and how Oda doesn’t outright say that Zoro is Luffy’s first mate but it’s more of an unspoken truth. It’s evident when Zoro was left in charge of half the crew when they first left for Wano and he always holds Luffy to a higher standard.

See, I think this video really hits upon what sets the group dynamics of the Straw Hats apart from other groups in similar series. They're not a group forced together by forces outside of their control, or just a bunch of buddies having fun on an adventure. There's this serious gravity to the bonds that the Straw Hats share, and those bonds run deeper than friendship or, in my opinion, even family. "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." The Straw Hats almost have something that reminds me of a blood pact going on. It reminds me of something Meliodas said to Elizabeth very early on in Seven Deadly Sins. "Even if you die somewhere along the way, I'll see this through to the end." Something to that effect. And I think the Straw Hats share a bond that transcends life and death, that it centers on their will to make Luffy the Pirate King, and that Zoro embodies this the best in some respects. But you can see it in the way Sanji throws away his dream to marry Pudding partly so that he doesn't obstruct Luffy's ambitions. It reminds me of the kinds of things you read about borderline mythical figures, like Alexander the Great, and I think it really enhances their dynamics in a group that no other Shonen manga I can think of achieve.

I can’t honestly imagine anyone else as a vice captain of the Straw Hats other than Zoro. Sure the guy isn’t the brightest of the crew but he doesn’t need to. His moments of taking lead whenever Luffy seems to get overwhelmed or fall apart r subtle but I love it. In my opinion, Zoro seems to respect Luffy the most (ofc everybody does too) & maybe Oda wants to highlight the fact that its the loyalty Luffy the main character is receiving but Zoro is usually the one who calls him “Captain” the most amongst the Straw Hats. Don’t remember when but I remember Zoro saying smthng like “altho he doesn’t seem like it, this guy is our Captain & we need to give him that respect & loyalty.” The first time a Straw Hats said “Captain’s orders” was Zoro when Luffy told him to save Smoker from drowning at the Alabasta arc. The relation they have is of a typical Boss & Underboss or the Alpha & the Beta Zoro’s loyalty & respect shows in his actions & Luffy trusts Zoro 😊

I think Zoro's importance to the crew becomes most obvious when you imagine what would happen if he died. I actually thought about this on Sabaody when it happened, because when Zoro disappears... I'm just left stunned and horrified. He was weakened, so it wasn't shocking that Zoro "lost", it's that he was gone and I could feel Luffy's overwhelming insecurity/uncertainty. Zoro might get lost and charge head-long into extreme circumstances, but if someone else had disappeared first, then I imagine he would've known how to respond. I also think he could've gotten the others to flee instead of fight, which is something Luffy couldn't do.

I've always liked their dynamic and their relationship since the beginning of the series since the beginning of when I started watching One piece last year their dynamic has always been just amazing to me and I've always noticed it I think Zoro is the official unofficial vice captain of the crew. Now that being said if there was a difference between vice Captain and first mate then I'd say Zorro is first mate and nami is vice Captain. But I'm still biased and even if that was the case I would still prefer Zorro be vice Captain and first mate.

I did think there was some overlooked symbolism in the very early anime when we have the Shanks flashback. It transitions from Zoro holding the strawhat to a closeup on the hat, to Shanks putting that hat on his head in the flashback. When i first started watching the series I saw this as Zoro taking on an almost bigger-brother role for Luffy in those early days, much like Shanks had been.

My favorite Luffy and Zoro moment is when Bellamy was making fun of their dreams and beating them down at the same time. Usually Zoro doesn’t take beatings like that from anyone, much less take orders that include letting someone beat you’re ass. And the fact that Luffy pulled a Shanks throughout that entire scene, for me. It’s the cherry on top. The bond between Captain And Vice captain is incomparable.

Zoro is confirmed as second in command in the manga numerous times and in one of the Vivre cards. For example in the chapter where Zoro almost slashed a CD, Urouge made a comment like: "A second in command worth 120 mil, he doesn't seem like the type to take orders. Guess that says a lot about his captain." Another example is when Zoro said in FI if Luffy didn't have Conquerors' haki, he would need to step down as a captain.

Their dynamic is actually one of my favorite things in One Piece, and I had forgotten I loved it until their reunion in Wano. I can't think of any of their time Zoro was smiling so widely and so obviously happy. That was the cheeriest we'd ever seen him (that I recall anyway) and Luffy gave him his signature Giant GlopTM that I forgot I adored and Zoro hugged him back just as fiercely. It was so sweet and happy and it'd also been a long ass time since we'd been with Zoro so I also missed him specifically. They are on so many of the same wavelengths, and funnily enough, they're also hilariously dumb or ignorant in a lot of the same ways. They both are destructive agents of chaos (Zoro's more aware of it, and as shown in the most recent chapters of the manga, he calls out Luffy for it, but is often oblivious to his own destruction); they're awful at being subtle (though Zoro tries and can understand the value of it, he just sucks and doesn't realize he ISN'T subtle -- again, see the most recent chapters); like seen at 7:02 they often don't understand/don't know some of the same things; both have a hard time following plans (at least Zoro tries sometimes, Luffy doesn't even bother to listen); and when it comes to food or alcohol, there's almost nothing else that they can think about; and they honestly just don't understand most other people often (ie anytime Zoro makes a comment about not getting the big deal about a beautiful woman and Sanji of course tries to strangle him, or both he and Luffy wondering why they should care about some authority figure). This said, Zoro does have more sense than Luffy, considering all of the times he's scolded him for getting in trouble or doing something stupid, for example. Just in case you doubted I thought so. They're equals and remind me of those two little shits you'd see in school that always get into so much trouble. They're nice guys but low-key little shits, dumb af, but aren't scared of anything and laugh in the face of danger. They have the utmost faith and trust in each other. The bond these two have are tight and fun and warm, and I can't wait to see more of it. It's genuinely such a joy to witness. Like them, it's very pure and straightforward.

I think it's more important than "be the second" (i think that Nami is the second in comand, for administrative reasons), Zoro is the only one who KNEW WHAT IS TO BE A PIRATE. when usopp left the crew, that was clear. he knew that Luffy and others couldnt just let usopp came back like nothing really happens. he said "if the crew didnt respect his capitain, they will respect nothing" (or something like that). he is serious and loyal like no other. he didnt want to become a pirate, but will give his life to mantain the bond in the crew. and that it's what is important about zoro, he is the one who know what he is doing.

On the point of re-accepting Usopp back, Zoro is the one that makes it clear to Luffy and the crew how serious and unacceptable the matter of defying your captain and leaving the crew is. And even though they all know Usopp will want to join them, Zoro instructs that they won't if he doesn't apologize and show respect, otherwise he himself can't follow Luffy. There's no other character that could enforce the importance of the position of captain onto Luffy as strong as Zoro can.

I think Zoro is always Luffy's second in command, it's just that on the other hand when selecting someone to lead in Luffy's stead, I'd argue that he's only above Franky, Chopper, and Usopp in terms of actually doing a good job at that. Nami, Sanji, and Robin are all better long-term tacticians, Brook and Jinbe are ex-captains themselves, and for every moment Zoro has acted as the de facto second in command, like when he gave advice about Usopp leaving and what it takes to be a pirate crew in Water 7, you can find a decent amount of similar moments for other characters, like Sanji kicking Luffy into a table when he realises Luffy's about to tell Usopp to leave. Zoro doesn't always function as the second in command of the crew, but he is always the captain's partner. The more significant thing to note about Zoro is that he's the only one of the members who joined in East Blue who has never left the crew at any point. That says a lot about his loyalty and dedication to Luffy, and is probably the most convincing argument that he deserves the title of second in command. I just think that there's decent arguments for Sanji and especially Nami to have claims to the title, especially with the latter being literally the only person Luffy trusts with his most valued possession as well as the person who takes umbrage with a lot of Luffy's decisions but ultimately trusts him, which feels more close to a first mate than Zoro.

Luffy has absolute trust in Zoro. In the Sky island arc, on the train to Enies Lobby and in many other situations once Zoro steps up Luffy sits back. Luffy who values his crew more than anything was not taking the rescue of Nami, Robin and Chopper seriously because in his words Zoro was with them.

So you shared some of the examples let me add to them. 1) whiskey peak Luffy is sleeping after eating and partying. 2)Aokiji fighting Luffy and both sanji and ussop starts arguing. 3) Thriller bark where Zoro starts fighting oars and explains ussop how Luffy is prone to tricks and stuff so oars needs to be defeated to take back Luffy's shadow atleast. 4) tells Luffy about not starting fight with big mom as they are already in war with kaidou... therefore Luffy repeatedly telling big mom he will come back later to take her down
