Yep! And I love how readily he amdits to needing help right from the start. His whole speech in Arlong Park about not knowing how to navigate, cook etc. And how he has his friends to help him for that really set this defining character trait in stone. Not only does it differentiate him from Ace but also a lot of other Shounen (or other action media) protagonists as well, who think they have to do everything on their own.

How is that true? I literally just watched an episode where Zoro prevented any of the crew to help Luffy fight when he was getting his ass beat, because "you don't interfere with a warriors battle". Sure Luffy had more help getting away from enemies that were too strong or after the big fight. But luffy never ran away or let others help once he decided to fight someone. He just got plot armor and was able to win or survive unlike ace

Ace at age 20 was only at sea for about 3 years, I think had he been at sea for 3 more, and hence 3 years older, he would have been substantially stronger. But also, age is def a key factor. Why do you think almost all the admirals are in their 50s? Aokji, the youngest, was 44. You really think garp at age 19 would have been strong enough to become the "hero of the marines"? "By that logic, shouldn't i just wait till i'm at least 40 before continuing my journey of becoming the pirate king?" Not necessarily a bad idea. Roger didn't really begin his journey to conquer the grand line until he was 49 years old, and already one of, if not _the_ strongest men in the world.

Ace getting more experienced in age wouldn't change the results too much in terms of strength because they would also be experienced and stronger. Especially against blackbeard because his fruit will still guaranteed his victory. Ace's flaws wasn't his age or strength but the kind person he was. He won't back down from a fight even if he has no chance of winning. Since Oda showed Ace was unable learn from his mistakes properly, it's almost like he was destined to go out this way.

This is actually really important on what makes Luffy and Ace different from one another. Shanks taught Luffy the importance of laughing off insults like that. In Fushia village, when the bandit insulted and poured beer on Shanks, Luffy is the one that got insulted on Shanks behalf. But Luffy learned. Ace was never taught that. This is also why Usopp's cowardice is important! Continuesly, Usopp rants about how running away so that you can live another day to fight is his way of life. I think usopp's character is hammering hone just how important it is to value your life over honor.

Two things: One is that once Ace learns that Blackbeard's plan is to go after Luffy, he kind of loses the option to run away. If he runs away then he is leaving his younger brother vulnerable. It's more than just revenge for Thatcher or Whitebeard's honor. If he runs then his younger brother would be the one taking his place. He had to stay to the bitter end at that point win or lose. The second is that Luffy knows when he is beat. He has that animal instinct that just tells him when the enemy is stronger, or not within his reach of beating, and he has run on a number of occasions. More importantly, he will run if he knows he can't protect his crew. Luffy has been the strong, the brave, and the cowardly depending on circumstances. He doesn't care who he has to be as long as he can continue after the one piece with his crew intact.

He's heard of him but I don't think he would let any of his sons(maybe he would let ace go) go to help him out cause again, he only cares for the safety of his sons. He barely knows who Luffy is so why would he send men to a person he doesn't really know? Anyone would have the same mindset. Plus he only met him at Marineford as the war was beginning. Think about it, if Ace got away, informed whitebeard and was allowed to go to Luffy, it could have been an even worse outcome that could've lead to Luffy or Ace dying. Also, even if whitebeard was afraid of protectting luffy, forbiding ace from protecting luffy would result in Ace feeling betrayed and leaving whitebeard crews... no doubt about this.

Probably every viewer knew Akainu was playing him, and Ace knew that too so he arrogantly threw everything away what the whole saga built up to...but most critically, he absolutely solidified his father sacrificing himself to make up for that mistake. Bluejam words were directly aimed at Ace, but more subtly so was Pekoms in saying "Logias who think they're invincible won't last in the New World" but even more so Whitebeard saying "(SQUARRRRDO!!!) Do you know how disgraceful it is for a child to die before his parent?" I don't dislike Ace as a whole, but that one flaw he had was as gaping as a burning hole in your chest

The strong/cowardly/brave rule is used well in the narrative, but realistically, it isn't true. Don't the lucky also sometimes survive? Don't some of the strong die anyway? Don't cowards often ensure their own death by being cowards? There are a lot of factors in battle that result in seemingly random deaths, but the actual rule is that the survivors are those that do not fight unless they know they're going to win, which is historically the lesson taught in warfare, business, etc. Coincidentally, Ace entered into battle without doing any reconnaissance or knowing what he was getting into. And Blackbeard is the kind of man who avoids conflict entirely unless he feels almost certain of victory.

Then Impel Down and Marineford came, Luffy uses his Gears constantly and recklessly pushes his body well past its breaking point on several occasions. While his determination keeps him alive against *significantly* stronger forces, his fatigue finally catches up with him at the worst possible moment, then boom, directly leads to Ace's death.

I wouldn't say Luffy is ENTIRELY protected by fate. Yes, in a lot of instances fate protects him. But there's been villains where he has initially fought and then decided to retreat or was forced to retreat when his initial fight failed or he needed time to recharge. The 3 fights with crocodiles... ok those were pretty much fate driven as Luffy got lucky that Robin saved him the first time. But, the fight with Lucci when he got small due to gear third. He didn't face him. He tried to run and hide whilst waiting to return to normal size. Same with Cracker where he had to run away to wait for 10 minutes to pass. And the final and i think most defining difference is at Sabaody archipelago. Where Luffy realised that he couldn't defeat the pacifistas and he told everyone to run! Including himself. He didn't sacrifice himself, he just gave the order to scatter. Part of this is probably because his devil fruit is not like Ace's. He has to be creative in how he uses it, unlike Ace who relied on the raw power of his logia fruit and like many grew overconfident in his ability and to an extent thought himself invincible which added to his downfall. He never saw a need to have to retreat and think of another solution because his skills from before and devil fruit never gave him that need.

it's not his logia fruit that did that. it's a trait he inherited from roger, hence why he refused to run from bluejam, long before he ever got a devil fruit. And it wasn't shown well in the anime but ace is stated to have all 3 forms of haki. So it's not that he just got complacent due to having a logia. He continued to get stronger.

Augur, while observing the fight, said that most devil fruit users are helpless when their powers are disabled by his captain, but that ace's basic fighting skills are quite strong so he isn't, which is to be expected of one of whitebeard's commanders. Though I guess blackbeard did point out that ace likely hadn't been hurt in a long time, but that's not necessarily about ace being overly reliant on his devil fruit.

It really is a shame that Ace had to die like that. The worst part really was the very end of his life. Both Ace and Luffy could've gotten away, but his own complexes became the end of him. It's sad, really, but I guess that's just the path he laid out for himself. In contrast, yes Luffy is stubborn and strong willed too, but he doesn't endanger everyone and everything in the same way as Ace. Luffy actually knows when to run away, which he eventually had to learn the hard way.

I think that the third mistake is the one that I can forgive the most. He made a wrong emotional decision in a highly emotional moment. He had been for one week in Impel Down, Sengoku had revealed to the world who was his father and mother (meaning that even if he had escaped his life would be a hellhole from now on), all his feelings of not deserving to live came to the surface again, all the people he loved (and to his surprise; loved him back) were risking their lifes to save him, Luffy was in the middle on the battle almost getting killed constantly and Whitebeard had decided to give away his life to protect their children. I dont't blame him for getting manipulated by Akainu, he got manipulated by the best at that game after all. Not only that, but it was a very unlucky death. Akainu is extreamely powerful, but in no way shape or form he would have been able to one shot Ace in any other given situation. If Ace was quick enough to put himself between Luffy and the fist, he was also quick enough to dodge it. Jinbei was there too, and if he noticed that Ace was in trouble he would've taken Ace place in the fight without any hesitation. It was really unfortunate that Luffy was down in that single moment and Akainu took notice of that, there is a reason why he chose to focus his attack on Luffy even tho Ace was down too (and Ace was his actual objective), he knew that the best way to kill Ace was to attack Luffy, because only two things could happen; Ace took the hit for Luffy and died, or Luffy took the hit and Ace went crazy and most likely died too. Thats why I don't like Ace death, it felt like everything that could wrong for him went wrong and was forced into a no way out situation by Oda.

Honestly I don't think luffy is the brave like ace. I believe he knows how to pick and choose when to be the strong and the coward. For example he ran from big mom because he knew he couldn't beat her. Even during the katakuri fight he ran away when he couldn't fight. He did exactly what white beard did and told everyone to run when they were fighting kuma and the admiral as well. Luffy knows when he is in a losing battle for the most part. Ace and Luffy are different in the part about running away. Ace would fight an already won battle simply because he won't run (Bluejam and Akainu) while Luffy readily admits when he's at a disadvantage and runs. Creating a hostage situation with Brulee is the best example. It's outright dishonourable to do that, maybe cowardly, but it allows him to win. You can also use other examples with Luffy in the series. Luffy wins in whatever dirty and unrefined way he can, Ace doesn't

Luffy fights the battles that needs to be fought. Like with Crocodile, the Croc needs to go down and out of the crew Luffy is most capable of taking him down therefore Luffy must fight. However if there's no need to fight Luffy is more than willing to peace out like with the citizen of Water 7 when they suspected them of attacking Iceberg. They were hostile but they didn't need to fight them so he evaded them.

I actually think that the way the story is set up, Ace was doomed to die regardless of if he pursued Blackbeard or not, by virtue of who he and Luffy are as individuals. If Ace hadn't caught up to Blackbeard when he did, it's outright stated: Blackbeard's next target was Luffy himself. If it hadn't been Ace that had fought and lost against Blackbeard, then it would have been Luffy and the Strawhats. And it's made abundantly clear multiple times, until the moment Ace dies, that he isn't going to let anyone kill Luffy. So even if he had obeyed Whitebeard's orders, then Luffy would have been captured instead, and Marineford would still have likely occurred regardless, only this time Ace instigates it by likely convincing Whitebeard to participate, because Whitebeard likely wouldn't have allowed Ace to storm Marineford alone, and would likely feel some responsibility for allowing Blackbeard onto the world and against Luffy. And ultimately, Ace still dies protecting Luffy, as he's required to by him playing the retrospective role of the "false" Joyboy. And it would possibly have even had the added impact of forcing Rayleigh and Shanks, both of whom speculated that Luffy was to be Roger's successor, into acting at Marineford as well (at least, sooner than Shanks did act). In addition to likely changing how Garp acted, and possibly causing Dragon to act. All of which further points towards Whitebeard still arriving, as he's not likely the person to see several of the most important figures in the world begin to move and do nothing in response. It's like one of those self-fulfilling, self-correcting timelines and prophecies: Marineford always happens, Whitebeard always confirms the One Piece exists, Ace always dies, and Luffy is always revealed to the world at the stage of the most significant conflict in recent history. The brothers were just too headstrong, too predictable, and too important for Ace to not die, and Marineford to not occur.

Portgas D Ace will always be one of my favorite characters... I'm not too scared to admit I cried like a baby when Ace died! It was an emotional roller coaster that gives the story heart, meaning, and character development for his little brother and main character of the show Monkey D Luffy! It gives Luffy more reason to follow his dream of being "King of the Pirates" and to bring freedom to the world of One Piece against the tyrant Celestial Dragons, the World Government, and the "Morganeers" that only bring misery and destruction... I'm still holding on to the hope that Luffy will avenge his big brother Ace by taking down the corrupt system!!

Ace is Oda's use of depression. even though he has all the talent and love in the world, he cant truly functionally accept that, and because of this he causes a heap of trouble for himself and others, which spirals back to why he believes the things about him that he does. essentially ace made up his mind, had an emotional disorder for whatever reason, and (non intentionally) did any and everything to prove his self doubt correct. I personally have never seen a character like this and I love how Oda doesn't take the time to spell it out to the audience because that would kind of negate how no one can truly understand him unless they too understand why he makes that decisions that he does. Oda does the same thing with white-beard. Robin is a similar story to Ace but was more clearly laid out because she had a more reasonable depression that stemmed from literally everyone. I wouldn't be surprised his Oda said ace actually had some sort of disorder. Maybe have grand line waifu do a video on this.

emotional disorder is an interesting way to put it. He seemed like an aggressive kid who definitely could be diagnosed with a conduct disorder. I think a lot of it could be the conditions of his upbringing, combined with his natural temperament. Real world studies show that many kids raised in understaffed orphanages have behavioral problems later in life, even if they are adopted into a good enough family. In theory it's because they didn't get enough nurturing contact to develop good attachment to a caregiver.

Ace never believed that his life had value because he grew up hearing people say "Roger's son is trash and is the devil incarnate". He never cared or accepted his father, nor did he have a real family to lean back on. So all of the bond he did have came from the brother bond with Luffy and Sabo (who found their own families out in the sea) and Whitebeard. And then he felt the need to defend the honor of the Whitebeard family, probably because that's all he had and it meant so much to him. And he was willing to save that honor by sacrificing himself because he saw no value in himself, which is why he was constantly surprised during the Paramount War when so many people came to save him.

I think luffy is brave when it comes to testing his strength or fighting against something that is rotten to the core like doffy or crocodile or kaido. But luffy also knows when to run to save his crew. He could have kept going for revenge of ace's death like ace did for thatch's but luffy went on a two year break. In other words he fled the battlefield that was forcing him to be brave only to come back and fight as a Strong. From what i believe ace never knew how to be a coward because he never really was the captain of the crew. When you are the captain you realise that being brave means nothing if you let your crew die. Just like whitebeard understood from the beginning till his last wish and like luffy understood on sabaody and while fleeing whole cake. The final flaw with ace was he was the eldest brother in the trio. Ace was conditioned to save everyone around him and never to expect help. Luffy was always used to being helped to survive. Thats the main reason why ace gave up while he was at impel down and luffy kept fighting and training while he was at udon. Or you can say it was fate that always saved luffy and isolated ace. He never felt he needed to be saved because he had the blood of gol d roger. Such a sad ending to such a good character.

Actually it feels more like he knew at one point his dad was the main character, one that made it to the top despite how people saw him - that was how he saw his dad and emulated that aspect. With this in mind Ace had a perspective on what a winner is, you don't run away from a fight or act cowardly otherwise you'd rather die. In the end, he accepted the love people had for him but then still choose to not run away bc it turns out that's actually who he is not just what he emulates from his father's life. He is grateful but still wants to selfishly repay that love he got by facing Akainu, im sure he didn't want people melting for shielding him as he ran off plus he knew Luffy would be the next target, his little brother would pay the cost. Ace had such a strong presence, it shaped who Luffy is today. Without Ace, Luffy wouldn't be who he is. Somethings you can't run away from. Personal relationships are more important than blood. A life of freedom or death. To chase one's dreams. To face the world. Sure Shanks gave Luffy the Strawhat but Ace gave him the fire in his eyes.

If Ace survived the paramount war, I think Marco would more likely be in command of all the Whitebeard Pirates and honestly he deserves it more than Ace. Ace may be a second division commander but first off, Marco has been with Whitebeard even before Oden(who Whitebeard called brother) was in the crew, he is overall the most revered in the crew just below Whitebeard himself, he's much stronger than Ace(even if Ace does have a logia. Marco showed lots of times that he could hold his own, hit and take hits from them whereas Ace can hold his own with Kuzan and maybe Kizaru just fine but not Akainu). Yes, Ace respects and loves whitebeard so much that he would want to do this but I don't think he will be, let alone be deserving of the position. @@KingJH0510 , the Paramount War would have still happened if Black Beard caught Luffy after Thriller Bark, but the war would have ended with all the Marines dead except for Garp and Sengoku, and Dragon along with the rest of his Revolutionary Army, and Ace and the White Beard Pirates would have been alive with the exception of White Beard dying along side by side all the other World Government officials in an alternate Paramount War.

The moment BB threatened Luffy, Ace was NEVER going to run from that fight. He believed he was protecting his brother. Luffy's plot armor is irrelevant. Obviously Ace doesn't know Luffy is the MC lol

The difference is that Luffy is fighting alongside others, and knows that he can't achieve everything alone. Ace on the other hand trusted his own strength more than anything else, and he tackled everything alone without regard for others.

Bravery is part of Ace's character, but Whitebeard also plays a role in this, he is a man that doesn't run away, that has no scars on his back. Ace idolises Whitebeard, he doesn't just see him a father figure. Ace's third mistake wasn't his bravery, he was defending Whitebeard honour, a man he looks up to. In this instance he really is thinking about Whitebeard's honour and not just acting out of self interest, as he did when he was chasing down Blackbeard.

There's a large fat chance that when Blackbeard arrives in Water7 will coincide with Garp's visit. I made a fanfic about it once I realized that. Oda didn't just make Ace to be the wall between BB and Luffy, Garp is there as well. You can argue BB won't succeed anyway if when he got to Luffy and suddenly Garp barged in out of nowhere and thrashed him. The timing is just too beautiful. Luffy is exhausted and probably will lose in a minute against BB, BAM, Garp arrived and got pissed when he saw his grandson losing against this nameless nobody. The theme of family in Water7 is also very big. Not only we got introduced to Garp- Luffy's grandpa, but also a mention of Luffy's father, Dragon. Meanwhile, somewhere in Banaro, Luffy's sworn brother was fighting BB to keep Luffy safe. Perhaps it was Oda's way to tell us that Luffy is protected from many angles. Ace- who fought till he can't anymore so BB can't pursue his brother. Garp- who didn't capture Luffy despite his position in the Marine. And the flashback with Dragon- where he prevented Smoker from capturing Luffy in Logue Town.

Yes, Ace is incredibly stupid if he thinks Blackbeard killed the 4th Commander and stole his devil fruit and would be an easy target for one weak Ace who only relied on his devil fruit. Also no matter if you see it from the retconned perspective or the original one. Either Ace was weak in Haki/did not use it (because he never counted on it) or he knew it existed and did not think Blackbeard might have Haki. Both show that he is not very smart. Blackbeard even had a strong crew. Ace wanted to kill them all alone. Arrogance is Ace's trademark and even the retcon did not change this fact. In the flashbacks he was always too cocky. He got what he deserved out of arrogance. Finally I only gave one way of how he could have handled it better, he had many more options. Like taking a few of his fellow WB members with him or just secretly follow Blackbeard until he found out more about him. He could have faked to join Blackbeard and convince him to target some other rookie (I bet the other Supernovae were pretty famous aswell, considering Kid's bounty was even higher than Luffy's). He pretty much just sacrificed his own life, hundreds of his crew's allies, his own captain and father and almost even Luffy, the one he wanted to "protect". He had so many chances to deal with Blackbeard. Ace is stupid and arrogant.

Ace had all 3 type of haki in 17 and his haki was so strong that Shanks, Ben Beckman, WB and Thatch admitted it. He already confirmed to be user of observation haki even before he joined Wb crew. And 2 other higly likely to be advanced too because Thatch said that you shouldn't focus on type of haki you are best at and after that he started to train pbs and made it advanced. What? No. I would consider Luffy as the strong before Sabaody and cowardly from Impel Down onwards. He did get lucky with Robin helping him in Alabasta, but that's the only instance I can think of for fate helping him. He even showed hints of being a coward pre time skip. He hid until his chibi mode runs out againstn Lucci, used the broken mirror stuck in his wig against Foxy, and used the 100 shadows against Oars. His willingness to run helped him out tremendously in the New World. He needed to recharge until he can access Gear 4th again and he accepted Sabo's help without hesitation. Ace would've continued the fight. Whole Cake Island's ending was basically them running away from Big Mom. This tendency was even shown in Sabaody where he told the crew to run for their lives. He also ran away from Blackbeard who put his brother into the mess that ultimately killed him. Luffy is an idiot like Ace, but he's willing to run to save his skin, unlike his older brother.

I think there is a difference between ace and Luffy that, much like the character flaws you listed in the video, is small but has a meaningful difference in the outcome of the story. Since a young age, ace knew about his lineage and was told that made him a continuation of the plauge that was Gol D Rodger ; since a young age, Luffy was ignorant to his birth parents identity, but didn't care since he had a different type of family who he cherished. This means that despite his initial intention to be a captain of his own crew, ace was willing to act as a subordinate to someone else who showed him the type parental affection he wanted for so long. Luffy never felt like he needed that, and thefore didn't think he would gain anything by joining someone elses crew. There's also the fact that what happend with teach is unlikely to happen with luffy since he really wouldn't want someone like that on his crew(we even have a scene of them disagreeing on something as simple as pie). In the end luffys bravery is a course of action he can stear away from, but for ace, doing so only validates the feeling of inadequacy he's felt since he was a child.

I wouldnt say thats the difference between the two. Theyre both very different in a good amount of ways, Ace's will is very determined and fixed while Luffy's more malleable (Didnt phrase that well but what I mean is that Ace will never give up no matter what and luffy was similar at the start like when he faced aokiji but after that he learned and had the crew attempt to run away in Saobondy.). But theyre also very similar. They want to protect what they have no matter the difficulty whether it be challenging the world or a lava boi. Ace even managed to abandon his never show his back mentality against Akainu for Luffy, when Akainu attacked luffy, he voluntarily showed his back to him while diving to save luffy and passed on his will to Luffy. Also Ace was likely considered as a joyboy of sorts before his death (WB wanted him to become PK and Kaido had some interest in him and even referenced joyboy(and likely ace in that same thing as well) recently). This is all written so masterfully.

Outside of all the jokes you're making this is honestly an extremely well thought out analysis of Ace as a character. True enough a lot of people have already pointed out how flawed Ace was as a character, but I think you're the first one that really meshed it all together by highlighting how Ace's backstory added to the depth of his flaws. I would add that Roger has been described to have this kind of personality as well and it transitions really well into how Ace hinted at his captain's flaws and that Luffy should not follow that same path. This is reflected in Luffy's growth as a character as well. If Luffy had been the same type of character like Roger/ACe, he would never have run away from Big Mom in Whole Cake Island and that would've probably cost him his crew.

Speaking from personal experience, even if you learn a given lesson, until you temper your emotions to properly apply said lesson, it's all for naught. Reading over his actions was tough, knowing how making decisions out of anger or posturing rarely leads to anything positive. Tough to read, but I'm glad a character like him was in the story.

How do you think the Whitebeard Pirates would have functioned if Ace survived? I think there would have been a split in the crew. Some would have blamed him for Pops death while others would've tried to protect him from those thoughts. The fighting could've gotten severe enough to start an internal war

The fights during Naruto were some of the best and yeah One Piece probably can’t top those, but Shippuden is another story. Shippuden has some pretty good fights early on, but I feel like after Pain vs Konoha, it goes down from there. I mean I wish Naruto did something a little more interesting instead of different versions than of Rasengan, or talking his enemies to death (although that last thing seems to plague most shonen).
