What a cast, Alec Guinness, excellent as always. I laughed near the end when they played the Colonel Bogey March which would become quite popular a few years later as the theme of another Guinness movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai. And there's Glynis Johns, who died earlier this year at the age of 100, and Petula Clark, one of the queens of pop music, who is still with us at 91. And last, but not least, Wilfrid Hyde-White, who never ceased to be entertaining in any role he was given.

Alec Guinness was one of the most under-rated actors of his generation but thank Goodness his legacy lives on through his films. ‘Kind Hearts & Coronets’ (also starring the wonderful Valerie Hobson) is one of the best films of our time - a true classic.

My favorite Alec Guinness film... and the lucky stiff gets to dance with Valerie Hobson....The music is so perfect, especially the Clarinet. Happy ending too, and in a way, they all got what they wanted... Took him long enough to get the proper girl.... just the type of suspense that makes a great film.

Machin's bookkeeping or path to success are not clear. So much of the story resembles the perils of spending money that's not yours or which you may never collect from debtors already in arrears. A funny tale, indeed, perhaps because a lot of it defies belief. If tragedy is comedy gone bad, then comedy is tragedy gone bad. The two comingle, ambiguously. Not so?
