Such a tragedy. Karen had accomplished so much in her short life. You see everyone(including myself) having opinions on who should have done more or placing blame. Obviously Richard loves his sister, and you can see the pain he is in. I only wish, something in her life was different and she would still be here. I wish I could just hug her and make her feel better. You just have to wonder how painful and alone she must have felt. That disease is just a horrible thing to see. So drastically devastating the body and I imagine also the mind. I think the whole solo album would have been a positive thing for her. There’s a few songs that could have been hits. And Richard only released those songs after mother passed. I can only imagine what else she could have done in life. I think she would have been even greater! I’m glad they got their Hollywood star, Carpenters definitely deserved it. Thanks Karen for your gift of all your beautiful songs you left us with!!! Love and miss u!!💜💜

The knowledge about anorexia was in early stages, when Karen died...maybe nowdays doctors know more about it, but despite this....it is still quite hard to cure it....and sadly, till to this day...many victims are dying from it 😞

Hi Vinny--2.4.1983 is the date Karen Carpenter died. Although this story may not pertain exactly to Karen's passing, the video is time stamped and dated from my old collection. Hope I didn't cause you confusion. Cheers!

When Someone gets notice and becomes a star in the music or TV, there’s a flip side, drugs and stress plays out . It in the songs they sing or like Robin Williams the laughter they brought to us,it’s a shame that money can ether make you a star or break you!!

The look on David Hartman's face at the end said it all. He asked all the right questions and couldn't get a definitive answer on why a young, 32 year old woman who was seemingly on top of the world was gone.

All because Society demands you look like a Death Camp or Gulag survivor. You have to be thin to look attractive. Yuk! Some girls and women are so thin you can,t see them when they stand sideways. You shove that you have to thin attitude, into your teenage daughter your going to give her a serious complex. Karen,s brother and mother were 2 of the major thorns in Karen,s side as were some aquaitances who would tell her she was fat because she filled out some dresses.

That star is only for Karen...she deserved to had that in her own because she can do her solo without her brother...her boring brother...a brother that under his mother's dress..they control her life that wasn't supposed to be...sorry,just making comment...i missed my lady Karen.

Its the use of ipecac syrup that did it. We can talk about anorexia all day and yes that affects the heart and health but the vomit inducing drug made her heart just give out. Had she not done that i think she would probably still be alive even with her illness. So sad.

@@cimarronhopper4605 The families denial is obvious. Always wondered if there was an incest angle to their relationship. From my understanding of anorexia it's mostly an urge for control. If the person feels they can't control anything else in their life they damn sure can control what food stays in their body. But it WAS a period of time when famous woman were held to ridiculous standards for body type. I still believe the family was ultimately responsible for starting her down that path. Much like Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears. The cash cow must perform. Have ZERO empathy for their families. THEY did this.

Karen is the only who made Richard famous. He was a spoiled selfish person.
@nealbraatz39113 жыл бұрын
Maryann, regardless of how you feel about Richard as a person, he was just as responsible for the Carpenter's success as Karen. Karen was a great singer, possibly the greatest, but she was just the singer. EVERYTHING else on those Carpenter recordings, the song choices, the writing, arranging, producing, multi tracking, keyboard playing, etc...was ALL Richard. Karen sang like an angel, but Richard was the one who created all those big, puffy, white clouds that Karen floated on.

@GoTeam You can laugh all you want, but, technically, I'm correct. "Just the singer" isn't a slam, it's fact. I'm as big of a Karen Carpenter fan as anyone, but on their (and her) albums, she was the singer. She didn't play any of the instruments, she didn't write or arrange any of the songs, and she didn't produce or engineer any of the recording sessions. Richard did most of that stuff (with some help, of course). So when you say it was 90% Karen and 10% Richard, I'm the one who's laughing. Actually, I'm shaking my head in disbelief. 😟
@nealbraatz39112 жыл бұрын
@GoTeam Since I can't seem to convince you, here is an excerpt from the description of a Master Class in Arranging that was offered by Stanford University (you've heard of Stanford, right?) "While Karen drew most of the attention as the vocalist, Richard's behind the scenes contributions to the Carpenters' success is immeasurable. He acted as A&R man, selecting tunes, he wrote many of their hits (such as Yesterday Once More and Top of the World), and he played keyboards. In addition to these roles, he also arranged and orchestrated nearly all of their recorded output. It is these contributions as an arranger that have earned him a reputation among insiders as one of the best pop arrangers of all time. Five nominations for a "best arrangement" grammy testify to this."

@Neal Braatz what??? Get your facts straight. First of all, she played drums AND bass guitar on a couple of their songs on the Offering/Ticket To Ride album AND she did co-produce on some of their albums (the album covers themselves list her as one of the co-producers, duh! Because she was!) AND she was stiffled by TPTB around her to stay with A&M only, AND God forbid that Quincy Jones himself came in on the last week before her solo album was to be released, AND did some rearranging to some of the songs on her album, less than 24 hrs before it would have been released, BUT she was STILL pressured to shelve the album, even after Quincy was 100% behind it and lent a helping hand to get it out there to the fans, AND I could go on and on... Your comments are inaccurate, to be kind. I could go on and on but, ha. Not worth the time or trouble. But honestly, the information is out there, and much, much more than these few tidbits I've mentioned here in this comment. But she was NOT JUST THE SINGER. Wow. How ignorant. She played drums and/or some form of percussion on some songs on EVERY album they recorded through at least 1976, and did some sort of percussion work on all of their albums. She played 100% of the percussion on the "Offering/Ticket To Ride" album, more than half on the "Close To You" album, the "Carpenters" album, and the "A Song For You" album, and played 100% of the drums and percussion on the "Now And Then" album (Yes! 100%! Richard talks about this in one of his interviews, including her drumming and how perfect her timing was on "Yesterday Once More") AND most of the percussion for the "Horizon" album including the hit single "Please, Mr. Postman." Good grief. The information is out there, available for anyone to look up. And I guarantee you if she were still alive, she'd still be singing and producing records if she wanted to with or without Richard. The two of them created the Carpenters' sound. Richard is a genius at arranging and producing, but if Richard had passed first Karen would still be singing and possibly even been starring on Broadway if she wanted to. I give credit to Richard, understanding what they had together with her voice. And he knew how to utilize her deep, low alto in their music. But others could have produced her down the road, too. The main reason she went for the higher pitch for her solo album was to not be accused of trying to sound Carpenterish. She deliberately did that, sang in a higher key, to avoid the Carpenterish sound. But, it seemed to backfire on her anyway. With some, it didn't matter what she did on the solo album; it was going to be wrong and mediocre in their eyes. Sad. Anyway. Just get the facts straight, claiming she was just the singer. That is outrageously and factually wrong.
