Karen Carpenter died on February 04, ,1983. It was my wife's thirtieth birthday. We were planning on going out for dinner to celebrate her big three-oh Instead we stayed home and listened to that amazing voice as we played our Carpenter albums on our stereo's turntable.

I wish her family, incl brother Richard here, staged a family intervention to get her medical and psychological help. Anorexia is a "mental" illness as well. But, as has been well documented, her family did not like to talk about such things openly thus Karen was left out to dry

Pablo Malaga Yes. I’ve seen a lot of documentaries, interviews. I don’t believe it was Richard in the slightest. They were very close. He was the absolute best at producing his sister, knowing what was right for her particular sound. Her Mom on the other hand? Totally favored Richard and from interviews seemed quite abrasive and curt with Karen. Just a tragedy all around.

I love all songs from The Carpenters absolutely but this one especifically has a special place in my heart because they had been to Rio/Brazil in 1981 in order to release it in the Brazilian market and performed a beautiful videoclip on top of the Corcovado Mountain with Christ the Redeemer as witness. It was simply majestic! Devastating her premature death and I don't know why her family allowed that to happen, they had to try fiercely everything they could to avoid it!

This was one story that I always wish could've been rewritten... 🕯 A Beautiful woman with one of the greatest distinctive three-octave vocal contralto voices ever heard. Who gave the world this wonderful, special gift of a lifetime. That will echo on forever in our hearts and in our souls. May You Rest In Peace 🕊 Karen. 🕊~❤️~🕊

La voz más dulce que escuché en mi vida. Siempre lo dije y lo diré. Tengo 60 años, y para mí Karen ha sido una gran pérdida para el canto. Siempre amaré esa melodiosa voz!!!

Just one year earlier she looked so great. At her wedding she was glowing! The marriage and rejection of her solo album must have damaged her self esteem in a big way for her to go back to damaging herself like this. It's so sad yet her voice sounds better than ever here. The carpenters must have been pretty unpopular in 81 yet this song proved to be a hit.

Karens mother was her problem with Anorexia. The mother always doted on Richard , while Karen was never good enough. She only wanted her mothers approval and love. This is why she starved herself. It was the only thing she had control over. She seen herself as imperfect , and kept trying to be perfect . Her mother controlled her life , even forcing Karen to marry after Karen wanted to back out , when she found out that he had a vasectomy. She knew that she would never have the children and happy life she longed for. Such a sad life!

She wanted to go in a different direction to Richard so he leaned on the record company not to release it, thus allowing him to control her and make her do the music he wanted. After all, without her he would be nothing.

@@jonathanhindson4580 You would not even know Karen as you do except for Richard! Yes, he was very protective of the Carpenter sound. But he also felt responsible for it. Do you know how many songs Richard picked and even wrote-- even specifically for Karen (like "Because We Are in Love")? How many albums did he produce? Who asked Karen to sing in her gorgeous lower range and arranged everything for that? A&M executives asked Karen that the album not be released-- and she complied. Many songs were not even completed and were only work leads.

@@jonathanhindson4580 That may well have been so. Additionally to that, her brother sank into his own qualude-abyss instead of helping his anorectic sister. Shame.

She is beautiful in my eyes in this video, not only her voice and with her standing despite her ilness. Only 30 years old, struggling with the disease anorexia nervosa and still performing with that angelic voice. She was also a world-class drummer, percussionist. Read in one of the comments that she bested out John Bonham in a drummers poll, she was # 10 & Bonham was #11. I also read in her life story that in her family brother Richard was Mommy's favorite, her golden boy. Karen didn't have much choices but to sing with her brother. Stardom brought on physiological stresses about her appearance, she had shy nature and the disease which was not well known then "anorexia nervosa" weakened her heart, body and she suffered a deadly heart attack at a young age of 32 years old. May she rest in peace..
