He is the least talked about so many probably don't know that, aside from being the only previously successful musician (Ric thought 'he'd be their claim to fame') and was the one who arranged all of the LP cover art and designed the band's wardrobe. That's a lot of talent.

In 1979 this was my favorite band. I just rediscovered them after a 30+year absence and they sound better now then back then. In 1979 I was a 15 year old kid and I knew they were good but now I hear exactly how good they were and man were they tight. Thank God for the Cars.

I love your comment. So nice said.

Tell me about rediscovering things. I'm not a Cars fans and I completely ignored Benjamin's singing! (except in "Drive", of course, smh). Great songs before all this MTV era where you thaught Ric was the only lead singer and the other members were almost nonexistent.
@rickr20295 жыл бұрын
@@sheylishka. Somewhat misleading. Before MTV, there were other shows like The Midnight Special and Don Kirscher's Rock Concert. These programs were broadcast on Free local channels that you could pick up on your rabbit ear antenna. MTV, on the other hand, came out later (early 80's) was on cable of which you pay for. The point is, that The Cars had made a BIG splash well before MTV,.and featured on The Midnight Special. There they showcased their mega hit "Just What I Needed" and later I believe 'Let's Go" from The CandyO album. So America was well informed that Orr was a "co" lead-singer. The one with the nice voice so-to-speak. I just wanted to state this because although The Cars were Perfect for and heavily played on MTV, especially the "Heartbreak City" album, that music was played on TV before MTV.
@sheylishka.5 жыл бұрын
@@rickr2029 Good to know, really, because I've seen so many, MANY comments about not knowing Benjamin sang almost half of the songa in the albums, or even popular ones like "Just What I Needed". Probably comments from younger generarions that grew with MTV or not american people. But I remember reading an interview with Benjamin, maybe made in 1985, where he said that many people didn't know who he was. Or another recent interview (2011 or 2012, don't remember) where Ric said that he thought Ben was kind of jelous of him because he had all the attention. Anyway,, personally, I always overlooked The Cars because I prefer heavier sruff, BUT if I had known how Benjamin Orr looked, I probably would had been more interested in them, lol.
@rickr20295 жыл бұрын
@@sheylishka. Thanks for your reply. I, too was more into harder Rock when The Cars broke the scene. And I began listening to music in my car on 8 track tape if that tells ya my generation. When The Cars came out it was the era of "The New Wave" bands. The Cars, The Police, Blondie etc. So there was a sense for being unique if you will. Ric Ocasek's 6'4 thin frame Jet Black hair and sunglasses image was as iconic as Gene Simmon's demon persona make-up was to Kiss. Ocasek also had that dopey voice and for me, at first, I didn't take his singing terribly serious. My taste aligned more with the Orr sung tunes. So The Cars knocked down the barriers to a new "sound" if you will. And Ocasek's image would be etched into people's mind especially the casual fan. Or the Non fan. So there was a sort of a divide in followers of the band. Those that came from Rock liked them for Orr and those that liked the modern New Age sound of the early eighties for the entire band. If they makes sense.

"The Cars"...is a band that, mostly falls into the category of "either one loves them or just don't get the vibe" Not many music buffs will say..."oh..they're okay". My older brother caught their performance in Toronto at The El Mocambo (I believe) way back in the late 60's. What a glorious opportunity I missed. He told me that, there were about Only A Dozen People at the event. They were ahead of their time....(we first thought that, their music was only a computerized production when we heard their first album.) I Love The Cars. Maybe you won't appreciate their style...At First. Give their tunes a few spins to see if the groove sinks in. I say to people....just like fungus...it grows on you. Spread baby spread...loving it Forever!! Thank You. "Strickly" 60's

Great song. The three chords resemble Heart Shaped Box now that I noticed it. There are only so many chord progressions one can use before it’s redundant. Ric would give Ben the songs he thought had a chance to become hits with his smooth vocals on them. He was usually right. Drive was a big hit because of Orrs voice.

I put this sound by Orr/Ocasek along with the nascent Romeo Void, Elvis Costello, Crowded House, and so many others of the MTV 80s. While reminiscent of British invasion/Merseybeat Brits, but still unlike anything heretofore heard, Now, Ric and Ben both dead - but this song won't go away. The clothes and music during this era changed big time - and New Wave brought great times for the clubs and music.

Ben was such an original, natural rock performer, as opposed to the other awkward-on-stage band members. He was never arrogant about it, and shy in interviews. Blue collar roots. And, in the pre-MTV era, who could have known The Cars had another lead singer(Ben!!) other than Ric! Just so you know, some say that all The Cars songs are great stoners ... not that I would know ... I'm just sayin'. There is one other video that you must see ... Initially, Very Few Music Lovers Were "In Tune" With Their Sound...However, Only 2 Years Later...In 1980 When "The Police" Played "Massey Hall" Which Had Many More Seats...There Were Hundreds Of Fans Outside The Venue On That Night Crying For Tickets.
