I’m 66, and enjoyed this. As a graphic designer creative director, my job has been to stay. On top and predict trends. One reason I never would have considered a tattoo. I would be sick of it in a year, just as I was of my own work. I find nothing sadder than a beautiful young lady who looks like she was thrown into a dumpster full of uncapped colored markers and rolled down a rocky hill.

That last paragraph was so much more artistic than any tattoo I've ever seen. You made a better case just there than the guy in the video. Do you write? If not, you should. You have a good imagination. And, the thing is, tattoos are a sign of vanity. What they indicate in their wearers is a valuation of the physical over the mental. Oddly, it's also a trashing of the physical. They are making themselves ugly for the sake of VANITY! What a strange idea. Yet it is so.

Can you explain why tattoos have exploded in advertising? I don't mean the Mad Men, I mean the models in the ads. Are those tattoos done in Photoshop? Are brands trying to be trendy? I just don't get it. I thought models had to be relatable. Yesterday I saw an ad for underwear, the model had tattoos all over. How can I relate to that?

I have had women who don't know what they want, only a tattoo and they change their mind from one design to the next. I find that worrisome and not far thinking. I'm sure, that people judging people with tattoos is not as severe nowadays, as when I grew up. In the '60's & '70's, a tattoo meant, that you'd almost instantaneously cut your job prospects in half, & if & when you got a job, you'd never be promoted more than a notch or two up the ladder over a 40 year career, if you had a visible tattoo. ...Even people, who had tattoo, always advised kids to never get them. In those days, if a woman had a tattoo, it meant, that they had worked as a drug addicted prostitute a some point in their life. There may have been an outside chance, that they'd worked in a circus freak show, but you just didn't see woman with them. I am 44 years old and have no tattoos. I thought seriously about it when I was younger and then again about a year ago. One thing that I've learned is that life, circumstances and situations are always changing. I've got a motorcycle,I love my wife,I have two kids. I don't have to have those things permanently drawn into my skin. Looking back over the last 20 years and looking forward I can honestly say that having tattoos covering my arms and other visible parts of my body would have and still make me miss out on certain opportunities in my life. I totally agree with everything this man is saying. I have nothing against people who have tattoos but no thanks for me. Hey to all the young folks. If you are dead set on getting a tattoo get temporary one's. That way you can wash it off before you go to that job interview or apply for the college you have been working so hard to get into. When I was 20 I had a good job making good money in the steel mills. This was 1976 and most of the guys in the mills were tough guys, vets and outliers, so most had tattoos. One night after some heavy drinking my buddies and I went to a tattoo parlor. My buddies already had tattoos so getting another was not a big deal for them. Me I was afraid of needles but this night was liquored up enough to get not one but two. The artists had me pick out what I wanted, gave me paper copies and said to put them on my bathroom mirror for a month. If I still wanted ink he was my guy... Thanks to that very smart and kind artists I do not have any tattoos. My kids heard my story but hey for them it was the 90's and they began their tattoo journey, they "feel the need for ink" and of course it shows the world how crazy and wild they are... So I think one day the "uninked" will be the outliers and will be considered the coolest of the cool and the wildest of the wild.

Your So right. The tattoo'd are no longer the unique ones it's the untattoo'd the more disciplined ones who are most rare of all. But everyone is guilty of sins just some are more plain to see. I tried to walk the narrow road but only on the outside. I have many dark secrets that my outward appearance hides. Likewise many tattoo'd individuals have the vice versa looking bad but being pure and good hearted on the inside. Many good people turn to various forms of self expression and or tormenting due to their sensitivities to the brutalities of the world. I have heard of tattoos being very therapeutic for people especially war veterans and others who have suffered intense emotional pains. When I was growing up, my Dad always told us, that if someone had a tattoo, it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, it just meant that at some point in their life, they had a lapse & used poor judgment. Some how, Dad pointing out, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, was what did the trick. If he had said, that it meant, that they were a bad person, somehow, I don't know if it would have worked. ...I, nor any of my 4 brothers & 1 sister ever even thought of getting a tattoo. Maybe by saying, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, made us pity the person with the tattoo, rather than admiring them. Seems like others in my generation were told w similar thing. Maybe it was in "Dear Abby" in the newspaper? I don't imagine, that Dad came up with it on his own, but maybe he did?

In the UK where i lived for years, it was over half of young girls had tattoos (plural). On normally visible places. Now I am back in central (what you call eastern) Europe and Tattoo is considered something losers, criminals and drug addicts have. Not normal people. Yes, there is a tiny group of artists and soldiers as well, but those are just few individuals. It might have been considered edgy and cool in the 90's, but it fell out of fashion quickly. It is btw why Czech and Hungarian porn stars are so popular - many of them are natural, no silicone, no tattoos. I wonder if that has something to do with - And I travelled a lot through the USA and Europe and it matches perfectly - with neomarxism (SJW trend). We do have SJW's here, but it is just a tiny fraction of what exists in the west. It is rare to see a person, who ha tattoos and has right wing ideas (libertarianism, small government, low taxes), and it is hard to find a SJW without tattoos. Just a thought. I believe in freedom of choice and I couldn't care less what you do with your skin, but unless a person is a member of a tribe, unit, brotherhood (sisterhood), needs to cower a nasty scar or has an important message to tell people (A-, allergy to penicillin), I consider said person an idiot. No, you are not edgy, if you have a "fried rice" Chinese character on your shoulder, barbed wire around your arm or a dolphin on your ankle. I do not see a rebel, I do not see an individual, I see an idiot, serial number 482649572.

SJW is short for "social justice warrior", someone, who takes neo-marxists ideas to modern issues, someone, who sees the society as a class struggle. Although a class now is not only "proletariate" or "bourgeoisie", but it is defined by various standards, sex, sexual orientation, skin colour, religion etc. SJW believes that there is a struggle between a group that holds power and a group that is oppressed. No middle ground. Whatever bad happens to women (they make on average less than men) is caused by patriarchy, evil society dominated by men (and not by the fact that women raise babies and thus stay at home for several years during their lives). An SJW has usually a very clear ladder of oppression, where the worst opressor is a combination of certain characteristics (white heterosexual non-trans male, either christian or atheist, with no disabilities and from non-immigrant background). Changing any of the characteristics "earns" you points on something that is by evil people like us called "the oppression olympics" - according to wiki: Oppression Olympics is a term used to describe verbal banter between allegedly marginalized groups, who are trying to determine the weight of their overall oppression, often by comparing race, gender, socioeconomic status or disabilities, in order to determine who is the worst off, and the most oppressed.

+newagetojo That is your opinion. Having children is usually a lifetime of happiness, along with it's ups and downs. People who have children and parent them well are contributing to society on a whole. We all need to be replaced one day, and two good kids per family takes on a new society and the elderly people in it, quite well.(Studies prove this!) It is actually selfish to not have kids, unless you are a sociopathic person. What, all the people who chose to have kids, must have their kids support you with their taxes as you become elderly? You do not have to contribute at all, except for your vacations, wardrobes and gardens??

@@zazaaziella16 Perhaps some people choose not to have children because there are so many misguided people in society like yourself. People who see human beings as cogs in a machine, there only to serve the will of the ignorant, brainwashed masses in a pitiful display of primitive herd mentality. Instead of living the human experience to learn and come to a greater understanding of reality - as it should be.. They exist to perpetuate the misguided clusterfuck of greed, status-seeking and war which is the status quo of humanity. I have no qualms about telling you straight. Your pathetic little ape society isn't fit for or deserving of any child of mine. If I were to have a child in this twisted society at this time, I would not be doing them any favours. It would be selfish of me to bring a child into this shitstorm humanity has created for itself, through the careless and deliberate cultivation of our worst failings. The idea that I would have any inclination to 'contribute' toward such a backward and self-destructive species is frankly, laughable. Or it would be if it weren't so tragic. Besides, the way humanity is going, they will destroy themselves soon anyway.

She graduated third in her HS class, an elite private school. She received an academic scholarship to a top 30 school. She works for a fortune 100 company and her fiancée graduates this spring from Georgetown Law School. I asked her back then if she thought the CEO of a company, partner at a law firm or even the wife of one of these people would have tattoos. I pledged to pay for any tattoo upon her graduation from Graduate School. We recently spoke about this conversation now 7 years later. She thanked me for being a good and firm father.

I had a beloved family member die by suicide in 2012, which affected me DEEPLY and in ways not many would (care to) understand. In 2014, on her birthday, I got my first (and so far, only) tattoo. It’s of a feather for its symbolism and just underneath is written the Portuguese word “Saudade”. So, for me, it IS a perfect personal expression, beyond that of the artist. Anyway, that’s the best way I can explain it I suppose. But I wish you (and all!) a blessed and happy new year!!!

I don't have tats, never will so long as I have agency over myself. But judging people based on choices from their past is exactly what Christ told us not to do. Judge not, lest ye be judged also, if I remember right. Some people have scars to show past errors, some have tats, some have skeletons in the closet and ruined lives in their wake. I once encountered a man at a store who had extensive face tattoos. When he walked in, I reflexively blinked, being surprised. It was a natural reaction, and not one of disgust or judgement. He walked by me, giving me a stern look that my gut instinct interpreted as; "Gotcha! You judged me! That makes me cool and morally superior to you, since you must be a prejudiced, old-fashion, uptight guy." It is my opinion that some (Not all) who get extensive tattoos all over their bodies are either screaming for attention, or get a kick seeing old school people like me do a double-take, and then feel self-righteously persecuted because we don't accept them or applaud them. Can't win if I ignore them, can't win if I look at them for a moment to study their tattoos. Maori warriors wore, and some do today, face tattoos for the sole purpose of frightening their enemies. They knew the psychological effect it has. I believe some (Again, not all, many are pretty chill folk) do such extreme tattoos for that same reason. So don't get a tattoo to compensate for your inferiority complex. If you do, don't judge people for being startled or staring. After all, that's the point of getting a tattoo in the first place, right?

The Maori facial tattoos certainly were scary and had a psychological effect. Because they were painful and difficult to get they had a rite of passage role too. They also showed your position and role within the tribe, warrior, fisherman, shaman etc. Some women also got tattoos once they were elders and had achieved senior status. After many years when they were out of favor, considered barbaric or unchristian they are making a comeback in New Zealand society. I'm 100% with you. I'm in your "bracket", and I literally shudder sometimes when I see an incredibly beautiful young woman, all tatted up. Think back as a child to the saggy, blurry runny ink that grandpa had, from his navy days in WWII. That's what they'll look like as mature women as well. Ugh. There is an old saying, paraphrasing here, that I think was attributed to Mark Twain regarding tattoos..(if I am wrong, please feel free to set me straight), Why would anyone have a picture that they wouldn't be caught dead hanging on their wall, have it PERMANENTLY etched onto their body? Happy New Year!

actually, tattoo ink has changed a lot since those years, so they tend not to become blue so much anymore. thanks for trying, though.

Oh how true. I have a tattoo I got when I was a stupid teenager. I had been drinking and my boyfriend at the time convinced me that we both should get a tattoo. His friend gave us both one. I woke up the next day with a unicorn (which looks like a three eared horse) on my shoulder. It resembles those small drawings you used to see in magazines with the caption "can you draw this?" Which if you could draw it and send it in you were given art lessons. I have hated it ever since. I haven't tried to get rid of it because it always reminds me to think before I make any decisions. At least I can't see it all the time.

The feminine body is a God designed thing of beauty. A woman's body is the art, not the canvas. A tattoo is like scribbling a moustache and glasses on you favorite work of art.

Yes, I've never seen a tattoo on a woman that made her more beautiful. In some borderline cases it comes close to not diminishing the beauty, but it never improves.

No normal man has ever looked at a woman with clear skin and thought "she's gorgeous but, she'd look better covered in tats" only "nice girl, shame about the tats", i know some guys like it, usually guys that have tats but most don't. My Dad had tattoos, he got them when he was in the RAF, he said he always regretted getting them so that has stayed with me, made it to 53 without any, just don't see the need.

@@banjotiki3910 Bullshit, most Tattoo's on females (and males) are 100% done for attention, i wouldn't gaze at a woman with tat's anyway as i think they look horrible but that's just my personal view.

When I was 20, all my friends started getting tattoos. They wanted me to join them. I told them - imagine if you were allowed to get them 10 years ago. You would have gotten ninja turtles or power rangers, and you'd hate them today. Same thing 10 years from now.

I had a friend who had Ninja Turtles and Bart Simpson tattoos right out of high school. A couple years later he had some horrible coverup tattoos over them

Totally disagree. I had my first tattoo at 22. I'm now 36 and had 3 more done in the last month. I am pretty heavily tattooed now. So 14 years on and I don't hate a single tattoo I have. I have very visible ones too - hands and neck. I'm also a teacher....Just wanted to throw that out there so people are aware that it is perfectly fine to get a real, proper and decent job being tattooed! I actually get where you're coming from with what you said and maybe it would apply to some but a lot of us that love tattoos really don't think that way whatsoever. I think there is a certain mindset with us folk that want a lot of tattooed. I feel like you either want a few or you want a LOT. The ones with a lot are usually the ones who don't regret their choices at all or are happy to cover up a tattoo they don't like and have no issue with that.

Videos like these are important because they try to help people understand exactly what they’re doing and the repercussions. If you still want a tattoo after doing your research and understanding the weight of your decision, then that is your right and no one is trying to take it away from you

@@BlueCollarLogic yeah but the way you came off was almost passive aggressive towards the ink crowd. You'r basicaly telling then, " im not calling you stupid for getting ink" and then telling those thinking of getting ink "you'r stupid if you get one". It's hard to point out but while your advise , some off it was sound, you'r delivery was not. Where my mother is from, growing up she associated them with gang members. The worst of the worst. My brother and I both have ink, but between us we have served our country 25 years , Army and Marines. Served protecting the public in the streets, law enforcement, and in cyberspace, cyber security analyst for uncle Sam. Were not rebellious nor we lack any mechanism in life. For us ink is to carry with us a memory, a remembrance, a something with us for the rest if our days.

@@ArmycAv2nd You say: "This falls more under your personal opinion than anything else." Yeah. So what? It's a video stating my opinion. The question to ask yourself is why my opinion bothers you so much. Obviously you understand that in many cases covering your body with tattoos ends up being a very bad idea. Yet, here you are trying to figure out a strategy for shutting me up. Time to start paying more attention to your inner voice of wisdom, rather than trying to prevent others from doing so.

@@BlueCollarLogic Because I think you are very informed about the topics you cover with a heavy dose of old school common sense. When I want to show my kids or whoever a good point of view about a certain topic, I come to blue collar as a good example of informed commenting. This time it came across as more of a "Don't do it its a fad, dont be a follower, its douche, because i say so type of advise." I understand not directed to my demographic but it just struck a nerve. When it comes to abuse of tattoos I just let them know, never in the neck or face and make sure you know what you want is what you gonna want 20 plus years down the road. But that the ideal of tatts is somewhat asinine or just a fad is a very arrogant statement to say.

I'm on Tinder and there are so many beautiful women in their 20's with tattoos. I don't understand the whole fad honestly. Need those likes and dopamine reward on Instagram and Facebook I guess. Saw a regular at the bar the other night. He use to be "normal", now he has a man bun and sleeve tattoo. These people, I'm telling you. Always chasing, never satisfied.
