Despite using fake skin, this is one of the best lining tutorials I have seen (and I’ve seen a lot). The key value is in the theory, which is dripped out at appropriate moments through the demonstration. Don’t be tempted to skip and watch bits and pieces, this one’s well worth being patient. I've been tattooing for over a decade, and I'd have to say that the Vaseline really isn't for the needle to be gliding. In my experience, the little Vaseline applied makes the excess ink much easier to wipe off. And that's basically the idea of the Vaseline. Technically, you need no help gliding the needle..

Ive been tattooing on practice skin for a couple of months now. I am by no means a master of straight lines, but feel like im getting better. However. No matter how steady my hand are when doing a line, it somehow always gets a bit wobbly. I noticed that a few of your lines did something that looked similar. Is that simply because it is practice skin, and it has a greater tendency to move around a bit, or is there any other explanation when it comes to practice skin vs. real? As i said, i am no master yet, but it still feels like it gets wobbly even if it felt like a “close to perfect” line. Awesome tutorial by the way! Learned so much from it!!
@TheCornDavis2 жыл бұрын
I did phlebotomy and it’s awesome to see the similarities between the two. A big game changer for a steady hand was definitely that contact. When putting a needle in someone’s arm it’s better to put some pressure on their arm than to try not to touch them (because you’re scared they will be uncomfortable by your touch). You’d have much more stability over the needle. Also one thing I learned about depth (again for phlebotomy but it applies to tattoos as well) is to imagine, in my case the vein and its shape when you check it out before poking. With tattooing, imagine the layers of skin, the type of skin your client has whether it’s more papery or elastic and imagine how far the needle will be going in. That will help you have a visual in your brain. As an artist, for sure move your arm, not your wrist. Your wrist can be wobbly but if you learn to move your arm, your lines will be so much more smoother. Hopefully that helps someone haha or even makes sense. But the pressure thing was a game changer for me. They are already uncomfortable having a needle in them, do whatever is good for you to keep a steady hand and they will be more appreciative of the ease you bring them will your steady hand vs. Not having a steady hand and constantly having to fix your mistakes.
