Why is Al Gore optimistic about climate change? In this spirited talk, Gore asks three powerful questions about the man-made forces threatening to destroy our planet - and the solutions we're designing to combat them. (Featuring Q&A with TED Curator Chris Anderson)

Hi Sticky, I just could not let Laejie get away with stupidity. Obviously, this person did not watch the video that clearly showed cost. but back to your initial question. Al Gore 'hatred' is an outgrowth of the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. You can get info on the FD from Wiki but the repeal led to bias reporting - and the creation of FOX. There have been other decisions that have allowed FOX to mislead their viewers to re-enforce their desire to influence their politics drawing a clear line that they favored GOP. The established themselves through cultural issues (against abortion, women rights,... list is endless) and distracted people from honest domestic and international policy. Instead they created tribes and they won the hate. They like to say liberals are the haters... we are just damn tired of getting run over... we are none too happy with the DNC. That's another issue. Gore was just a target and a continued target, by FOX.

Talks like this need to be publicised for animal agriculture's impact on the environment. It's great that we are switching to clean energy sources, but LARGE percentages of our carbon emissions, fresh water usage, forestry and resource depletion aren't due to the way we produce energy. We need to tackle every aspect of the problem and agriculture is a HUGE one, among others that have never gotten nearly the same attention as the fossil fuel problem, and are arguable just as impactful.

+itoohavedreams The medieval warm period (learn to spell) was most likely a result of increased sunspot activity due to changes in milankovitch cycles. However this cannot explain recent warming which has been happening faster than ever naturally recorded. You quote natural climate oscillations but these happen over a far longer scale (10s of 1000s of years) than what has been seen over the last 200.
@garith21
@garith21 8 жыл бұрын
+itoohavedreams "Then ask them what they think about the mid-evil warm period. " What about it? Northern Europe and Greenland were much warmer and relatively fertile...the rest of the world, not so much. Much of Asia and North America were experiencing mega droughts. The MWP was more than likely primarily a local phenomenon. "Then ask them what effect the Earth's positioning from the sun has on the temperature." Depends on the milankovitch factors at play, but the factors you're talking about won't be significant for thousands of years and take tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years. Which is kind of amusing when you're trying to attribute them for the cause of the last few decades. The proper way to approach the problem is ask what would be predicted patterns of warming based on different mechanisms and test accordingly. We know that CO2 is the most likely cause because it has a unique fingerprint of warming the troposphere while cooling the stratosphere. It has several other fingerprints within the instrumental record, but this unique fingerprint is also within the record and even if you reject CO2 as the cause you still need to explain the observations.
@garith21
@garith21 8 жыл бұрын
***** Right....Till you realize there are observations that we have on instrumental record this might seem convincing. We observe more warming at the poles than the equator...probably not the sun doing that. We observe a warming in the troposphere but a cooling in the stratosphere...again probably not the sun. We observe the sun it's self has been dimming over the last few solar cycles to the point that people have been questioning whether or not we'll enter a new maunder minimum. Probably not responsible for most of the warming through those solar cycles. We observe it warming at night at about as much as the day...again probably not the sun. We measure an increase in downwards long wave radiation in the bands that CO2 absorbs....again probably not the sun. There are reasons why the scientists discuss topics like most recent decades with regards to this matter because while solar activity has been dropping, temperatures have continued to rise. Also we're already pretty aware of the brightening of the sun over the last 100-150 years, in fact it explains most of the warming for most of the instrumental record up till a few decades ago which no one disputes. It doesn't however explain the most recent warming because none of the observations that would be expected for that proposed mechanism are visible. Also for your 12 year old article I will post the 12 year old statement from the same institute. www.mpg.de/research/sun-influence-global-climate

Why is there so much more attention paid to climate change instead of the cutting down of almost all tropical forests left, or of all the toxic waste and amounts of trash we put in the environment non stop?..I honestly think those things are more important and urgent than a couple cities losing their beaches. Its not to say global warming isn't a real problem, but by addressing deforestation and toxic waste that produces methane we can help solve global warming. All I'm saying is they should have equal importance, and all be addressed instead of throwing all our attention to one thing and almost forgetting the others. What we do to the environment is connected, we can't expect to fix global warming and not uncontrolled deforestation and expect to have solved our environmental problems. Anyway, just a thing to consider.

I wonder if they know these figures, and it still won't be enough or if they are withholding that info to spur more change. I don't think he answered Chris's question at the end (Is it enough, fast enough), which is really the only question to be addressed. @Creepy-Girl
@Creepy-Girl 8 жыл бұрын
George Cataloni I don't live in the states, I live in sweden. Also, there is a difference between on how much you contribute. There is a difference between willingly contribute and unwillingly contribute. If more people were to be vegan, then the demand for meat and dairy products would be less and therefore that unwillingly contribute that you are talking about will be less too.
@georgecataloni4720
@georgecataloni4720 8 жыл бұрын
SuperPig Sweden is not exempt from agricultural subsidies. I believe it's the EU that pays it, though, which just adds another layer of bureaucracy between your taxes and the subsidies. How much you contribute is not important. If meat and dairy consumption drops, the subsidies will rise to keep them in business. That is why they get so much now: the government is trying to keep them in business. Your willingness or unwillingness to participate does not change how much you participate when subsidies are involved.

This nit picking back in 2000 cost us the presidency. Also the Nader campaign was actively trying to get people in Florida to vote for Nader > Gore, so it's no question that the Nader campaign siphoned off votes from Al Gore. This is good to see the progress. I'd like to know two things; First, with the growth of the renewables sector, how much carbon does it eliminate from our global carbon footprint? And in the context of non-burnable carbon reserves, how much of the burnable reserves will we consume for the fossil fuel systems we still have and, on the reverse, not burn for the replacement of those systems by renewable energy? Second, what is the US generation GWH (Gigawatt-hour) percentage that is renewables and how fast and far are renewables advancing in the US?
