As a teenager myself I have never invisioned myself making it to adulthood, but as it draws closer I feel younger and younger. Your video was really good I like your analysis of fear of growing up and the nostalgic feeling that settles as we grow.

I'm 21 and relate to a lot of what you said. Its difficult navigating adulthood and it can be nice to fall back on interests I had as a teen. Anyway, this video was amazing and your cat is so cute. :)

When I was a teen I was smoking, doing drugs and wearing dark clothes so my peers think I'm cool and mature, but now as a 21 year old I don't need to impress anyone. I know better who my real friends are so I allow myself to be myself and I'm going back to the interests I abandoned because they didnt seem cool enough when I was younger. I feel so much more authentic and if I wasn't so self conscious of everything as a teen I probably would've had a much better time! But really being a teenager is so over glamorised in the media when actually its just an awkward and not very interesting time for the most of us. The pandemic helped me realise that all these people I was trying to impress were completely irrelevant when I wasn't at school and I could just stop caring so much. Being in my twenties has been so freeing but it is a difficult period so its good to find comfort in being yourself.

I dealt with a lot of abuse and parentification in my teens so, I'm spending my early 20s navigating hurdles I should've jumped over when I was 16. I think I deserve to enjoy the peaks and plateaus of teen-hood at the age of 24 years old. 🤷🏾‍♀️💖

I would’ve love it if you had explored the differences / similarities between genders even more. You touched upon it briefly but most of the examples related to girlhood, chick flicks, female fashion etc. Loved the video though!

I think that we try to relive our youth when we had our childhood/teenhood taken from us. It's a trauma response. I'm not saying that this is the case for ALL 20 something year old women who try to relive their teen years, but studies have proven that people who are victims of childhood trauma will try to relive their youth, on their OWN terms and in a safer way, and most people I've met who relate this way almost always seem to have traumatic childhoods childhoods and often had to grow up fast in some ways. Many will glorify adolescence or childhood, even if they themselves didn't enjoy their adolescence or childhood, because nostalgia can change how we see the past, or we have an idea of what adolescence is supposed to look like, and we glorify THAT. It can also be the lack of hope we have for the future and beauty standards, but it's more than that.

I gues most 20 something women have a trauma during the pandemic, for most of us it put a stop on one of the most important periods of our life and skiped it

I’m in my mid thirties watching this and largely relating to it 🤷‍♀️ I think a lot of ‘growing up’ is giving in to the standard patterns of the society we’re in…’playing our part’, and I think our generations have just started doing less of that

The mature aesthetic ideal girls are offered as they transition from girlhood is actually "the mother", and later as that season has passed "the matriarch". Womanhood is intrinsically connected to relationship-building and family. Women's physical beauty is harvested to bear spiritual beauty that lasts beyond her lifetime.

Thanks for another really instructive video on a very interesting, yet seemingly unexplored topic. With all its uncertainties and so many threats and rules (both written and unwritten) I can relate how it can be hard to today's youth to make a leap into "adulthood" in the sense it used to be in the past (when taking Bruce Springsteen's "The River" or Cat Steven's "Father and Son" songs as examples of the 1970's North American lifestyle when young men where expected to move out of the family home at 17-19, find a house, get married, and have kids, etc.). Rather than brushing away today's phenomenon of wanting to prolong teenager years as being silly, could it simply be that: with a significantly more complicated world in which today's youth is sent out to fend for themselves; it should be considered natural that the transitional period be similarly increased? I loved watching and am eagerly waiting for your next topic!

i think its a case of cultural stagnation. like if there was something culturally equivalent to a one direction or urban outfitters for adults people would be more excited to get older lol.

Hello! I just rewatched your video on looks maxing ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4HcmGWtZcuHrM0 ) and would point out a few similarities between the phenomenon you are describing here (mainly when considering young women) and the trend in young males to try and exaggerate body features. Although this is less "age/period of life" related; this also could be interpreted as a form of wanting to look/feel/act younger. I love your essays and am so glad I subscribed to your channel! Please keep posting :)
