Have you heard of the Cat Distribution System? There’s a joke online that sometimes the universe decides when it’s time for you to rescue a cat. Such was the case for me on a recent trip to Birmingham, where a chance encounter with a terrified kitten turned my work trip into a rescue mission!

Yyyyeahhhh... I'm hoping that a more thorough scan happened off camera, but if that was it, it's like they were trying to not find it. They didn't even touch the main implant area, for Pete's sake. That being said, on an intact 6 month old... Kinda seems unlikely that the previous owners would have microchipped him but not neutered him. So, who knows.

Yeah, a lot of people don't even realize they can get a cat chipped or that there are all kinds of online lost pet resources. I hope the shelter has the sense to check the outlying areas too, cats can get pretty far from home, especially if they get curious and climb in the mailman's van.

My cat Max went missing 6 years ago. He was chipped but I had lost the paperwork to know how to find him. I went to the shelters and local vets with no answers. I started getting Facebook messages saying I have your cat. It caught me off guard and being a woman I didn't know how to find out if it was him. Finally I messaged them back and went to see if he was there with my husband. As soon as I walked into this ladies house he heard my voice from outside. He came running into the house, jumped on the back of the chair purring and nuzzleing me. Then he got on my lap and put a paw on each shoulder letting it be known that I was his. I had him for 4 more years before he died from cancer. He was 14 years old. He chose me when he was a 8 week old kitten. i now have 3 calico kittens., all sisters. they just turned 1.

@@MaggieBer I mean, at the same time, wouldn't you be hanging up missing posters and calling or going to every single shelter and animal control place within a 20 mile radius? If my boy got loose (he's an escape artist we do our best but every once in a blue moon he gets an outside day, hence him being spayed, chipped and has collar tags) and didn't come back in a few hours I'd be driving all over and hanging up fliers and visiting anywhere he might be and looking into online resources and just doing literally anything I could think of to find him. I don't think the owners really tried honestly.. barring something like chronic illness that would prevent going around looking for him, they would've had him back if they'd even called shelters in the area and asked about a cat with his description. The same thing happened with my cat. I found him and the first thing we did was check for a chip and then the shelter put out a found cat thing and we wanted him after the hold so we let them know and then we went out and put up found cat posters near every shelter in the area with the info on where he was. No one ever called. It took years for a neighbor to tell us it was common to dump cats I the area and we'd just lucked out and got him before the coyotes could. I'm not saying this cat was dumped but I find it hard to belive that if they wanted to his original owners could've have found him.

@@kitcat-xn1mn Not necessarily. We had a kitten (also a 6 month old male) who ran away, and we did all those things. Missing posters, phones to shelters, knocking on neighbors' doors, etc. and got nowhere. We were sure he was gone forever, but it turned out he managed to somehow get himself to another town (we still don't know how), and thankfully was found by a lovely couple who took him to a vet, and he did have a chip, so we got him back, and he stayed with us until his senior years. It's absolutely important to chip your pets, but not having done that in time doesn't mean they didn't care or look for him.

@badwolf7850There is supposedly some new food types that can help with cat allergies. The science-y explanation, iirc, is that there is an enzyme produced by chickens that, when mixed into cat food, can help reduce the amount of dandruff and stuff they shed by 80ish% There are some cat food formulas now that have it but ymmv as to whether or not it helps you specifically or even works. You're one of the top comments at the moment so I'm going to leave a tip about ID Tags vs Microchips, ID tags are great and Gerald could have been returned to their human immediately if he had one, but you can't lose a microchip like you could lose an ID tag on a collar, if not a collar entirely. Many city clinics will chip for $35 or so, which is about the cost of a collar and tag anyway. Register the microchip and bam! Proof of ownership that cannot fall off the animal

My husband must have been Air Tagged by the Cat Distribution System. He's rescued so many cats over the years, they used to come for us. Wild cat got a kitten with a nasty spider bite swollen paw, take it to those people, bang on the screen door at three am. Crawl into their car engine and yell bloody murder when the sun comes up, jump on them when they're hanging up laundry in the back yard. Just go have kittens in their back yard! We're on our last rescue cat, I swear! 2 weeks old, crawling with fleas, yelled at hubby to pick him up and take him home in the parking lot at work. He's 16 now and rules the house. Kittens need not apply. The last two attempts went to the no kill shelter and were adopted (they send out a congrats note to rescuers!). We broke the system! I think. 😂 Watch one show up tomorrow at 2 am. 😑

My mom is the same. I swear some animals can just detect loving and helpful humans, and especially cats. (Also good luck, but I always find it hard to believe when someone talks about their "last rescue cat". My grandparents, both in their 80s now, told me that they would not have another cat again. twice. now they're feeding the next stray that showed up and starting to coax him inside with food. they named him Peter but already use cutesy nicknames for him. we live 7 hours away and many friends and family are passing at their age so they get lonely and while they said they didn't want new cats, when they do get another one they always talk about them and how they bring joy into the house. there's just no retiring from the cat distribution system if it doesn't want you to 😂) edit: I love that they send a congrats, that's so nice. I'd definitely be following up on all our rescues, but we've managed to adopt all of our found cats and dogs out to loving homes ourselves, no shelters involved, so they are with friends or at least friends of friends and we get updates on everyone directly.

I took him out and the first thing he do was snuggle up to my chin. He didn’t want to play, he wanted human TLC. I socialized him for a week and then he caught the cat shelter virus.he was in sick bay and they were going to euthanize him because there was no room for him to stay in there as he was pretty sick. 😢. I took him right away, and we had him for 15 years. He was so sweet. We lost him in August 2022 and still miss him dearly.

Yes! I believe Jackson!! I lost my beautiful chow chow a few years ago, almost a year after he passed I went to the shelter to donate and while there I looked at the dogs. I physically got sick and said outloud "No , I can't get another dog right now...I'm not ready." Well the universe heard me and a few days later a mama cat had her kittens on my patio. So yesterday we celebrated Gidget and Lulu's 1st birthday. Obtw the shelter provided me with hand warmers, bottle, formula and information how to care for the kittens. I have found these 2 kit/cats have filled the piece of my heart from my chow Sugarfoot. I refer these 2 as Sugars babies.

I had been in a rehab facility for over 3 months after my heart issues. I was so afraid that my cats would forget me. Not even five minutes after I got in my door my cats were in my arms cuddling and kissing my face. They both slept on me and didn’t leave my side. Cats can be the most loving sweethearts on earth. They definitely remembered me. I should add that the wonderful person I had caring for them in my absence admitted that they didn’t see them at all, they always hid. Now I’m home they are out and about in front of anyone who visits. How I missed them, how happy they make me

I was kind of surprised to see them do all the vaccinations right away before the hold was over. If the owner came forward and it turned out he already had all his shots, would it have been OK that he had them twice? I'm glad he has a happy & safe home now. Wonder how he ended up outside where he was, but with a collar.

What a shame the original family did not find him (he had a collar!!). But nice that Gerald found a new loving home. Rescued cats are the best (sure, it can take them a bit of time to get over their trauma, but be patient). It is so rewarding, for them and for you. The rescue centre was concerned about my adoptee (two failed adoptions, and 8 months in the system), but she is now so loving and adorable. It was a slow and gentle road to get to this point, and I think she will blossom even more in time, but she is happy and settled, and loved of course. I let her pick me (oh don't remind me of the subtle rejections I got from other cats in shelter, even though I am a 'cat person' and 99% of cats love me - they know who they should be going home with). Always let the cat pick you! One of my previous rescue cats absolutely demanded that I take her home with me, I had little choice!

Hi Tony. I'm from Melbourne and have 2 rescue Cats. One 2.5 male called Olly. And a 2 year old little girl called Rocket. Olly was found with a badly broken leg, but they were able to save it. We adopted him from the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in December 2022. Poor little Rocket 🚀 wasn't so lucky. She lost her rear right leg. They thought that by the nature of the injury, she may have gotten hung by something. She still chases her brother around the house, and we've trained them to walk on harnesses out in the yard. I have a 15.5 year old miniature Dachshund that I rescued way back in 2013. Everyone gets along well. Just thought I'd say hello to another Aussie. 🇦🇺❤

She's so sweet and loving I named her Precious. Just got her spayed and we're in the process of introducing her to the boys. People around my area frequently dump cats off in the forest. @@t3b557 It doesn't, does it? But unfortunately shelters have so few resources and so many animals coming in that I gather that's all the time they can spare before having to adopt them out. We recently rescued the sweetest male tuxedo tabby from Petsmart. I knew my mother wouldn’t allow us to get another cat until summer so I kept visiting him in the shelter just to keep him company. He was so shy, and small and had been there for weeks. I was so worried no one would adopt him so I just asked my mother just in case. She initially said no but then couldn’t stop thinking about him and changed her mind. Once we adopted him he was also diagnosed with FIV which I know some people immediately put down FIV cats. I just can’t bear to imagine what might have happened if we hadn’t taken him. It took a few weeks for him to come out of his shell but now he is the most loving, cuddly, funny cat. Our family does so much better with him in it. We needed him and he needed us.

Such a pretty kitty. I'm so glad they were rescued. My husband and I have rescued 5 kitties from our backyard, and have taken in 6 found by other people, 4 of them were found by my husband's coworkers at Waste Management on their routes. And, my husband brought one home from one of his routes. The other two were found abandoned under a shed by my SIL's friend's boss. They were bottle babies and 3 of the one's found on a route, were siblings, not even three weeks old, so I bottle fed them too. We take them all to the vets and get them their wellness checks and inoculations. Our vet is awesome and gives us discounts and even freebies, including a free surgery for one of our babies, for her teeth. She seems pretty old, she's a baby rescued from our yard. We also foster for our shelter and work with the animal control to catch them and TNR them. I am a crazy kitty lady. All our babies are either rescued or adopted. Kitties are awesome. 😻

Love the cat in a back pack - There was a time i had a 16-18 lb winter weight (not overweight, just big and strong), tiger stripe indoor-outdoor cat who came to me at about 4 to 5 months after some serious abuse with a serious, snarly personality. To go to the vet, we tried a cage in which he did full feral cat thrashing even though it was on the small side. We tried a box used to hold reams of paper, then we taped it well which he worked free, then i sat on said box which he was able to hook a claw on the edges to rip the box and walk free. This worked that time because he liked my head to sit, slop, slide, and hold on with claws and i was not driving. To get him into the vet's i removed everything from a serious weekender luggage bag, dropped him in, and zipped fast. From then on, if it was a short in-town trip he traveled in that weekender bag.

I got my girl from the shelter… it was an amazing adventure that started before my percipient cat even passed away at 18. I was working with a young girl who’s parents had this beautiful cat with very odd coat patterns that i’d never seen before. Her parents didn’t know what it was so I looked it up. Turns out their cat was a torbie. A tortoiseshell tabby cat. Then at the end of the summer my coworkers were checking out the shelter cats on one of their phones and the cat who had been there the longest had been there since the day before my birthday in 2022. I thought, if my girl goes, as I knew she was getting pretty old and was starting to slow down and stuff, this may be a sign that that cat is supposed to be mine. When my girl went in September, I instantly remembered that cat and called the shelter up. That cat had just been claimed for adoption but they urged me to come and see the cats because some cat there was waiting to come home with me. I looked at the cats that had been there a while and one really caught my eye visually but I was wary of the name because the cat I put down was Lilly and this cat was Lily. In the end I decided that i’d just go and let the cat choose me. We went and all the cats were kind of like warm with us. It was a little bit disappointing to be honest… that is until they brought us into the yard area where the cat’s outdoor enclosure was and one of those little fur babies started meowing and pawing at us. It was Lily. She was so friendly and loved getting pets. She was super sweet. I ended up asking them to keep her on a hold until I could bring my special needs client who came over lots over to make sure she got along with him. When we brought him, she loved him. (He is now her uncle and he spoils her rotten with treats.) We told them we’d take her and went to do the paperwork and then they told us her birthday. She shares my deceased mother’s birthday. I cried a little at that. Her favourite napping spot is the end of my mom’s side of the bed my parents once shared. My cousin is convinced she is my mom’s reincarnation. She loves her grandpa, her mommy and her uncle and we all love her to bits. She’s a spunky little diva and life is never boring with her around. We’re almost positive she’s part Maine Coon. She has all the common personality traits and the big paws with the long braid-able toe hair and the long ear hairs and everything. She’s small but she’s still only 3 years old which is still a kitten in Maine Coon years as they’re fully grown at 5.

I live alone in my 2 story New England house and I have 2 "Strays" living here. The "Mamacita" of the house, Sheena, who basically runs things, and my Feral boy "Damien" that I finally (after 15 months!) got to a point that he likes to be touched and petted. They're both all black. She's a gorgeous long-hair and he's a sleek shorthair parlor panther. I got her from Defenders Of Animals when Covid took her owner and Damien. was at my local shelter. He'd been found by animal rescue trapped in a dumpster while scavenging for food. I got him first, then her to. help him socialise and keep him entertained. They're the best. He LOVES her too. It's funny to watch him swoon over her.. So yes, adopt. You'll likely save a life and make yours so much better.

My husband and I have 2 cats that both used to be strays. I picked up our first cat who was around 3 months old at the time, due to a concerning wound on her inner thigh. My husband picked up our second cat exactly 1 year later, who was around 4 months old at the time, due to the people at the market being concerned that the stray dogs might harm it. They are both permanent parts of our family now. After moving to a new house, a small 5 week old kitten appeared outside the kitchen door. We took it in, and treated it for diarrhea whilst being in contact with our amazing vet (we had moved far away from our vet and had yet to do research on the vets in the area. Here it can be difficult to find a trustworthy vet that gives you fair pricing). After a few days we found a good vet near us and were able to take the kitten there. Thanks to the vets help, we were able to find the kitten a new home, who make sure to take the kitten to the vet regularly so that they stay up-to-date on all vaccines. In this country it is very hard to find people who are interested in non-breed cats, so the shelters that exist here, are overrun with non-breed cats sadly. This is why we decided to not take the kitten to a shelter, and why we were trying to find them a home on our own.
