That was absolutely criminal what you did . You’re not a handyman , you’re a criminal for hiding the roof leak , and the damage that it has caused . Your more concerned with dog hair in the furnace , then fixing the main problem which is the mold , the roof , and the furnace .

As a painting contractor I wouldn't recommend priming using Zinzer 123 for water stains. Its a water based product and doesn't block stains all that well. I like to use Zinzer coverstain or oil based killz. It blocks stains a lot better and if you need to sand it it sands really nice.

We had some walls in our fire station that got damp and grew mold due to some leaks in the exterior block wall. Because fire stations are public buildings and as firefighters we are already exposed to a ton of toxic materials from the nature of our job, a significant amount of research was done on how best to mitigate the problem. One thing that was found out early on was that bleach wasn't good enough because it doesn't penetrate well enough to kill the roots of the mold. They had to use something else to kill it. Then they had to measure how dry things were and then it had to be sealed. Some of the worst spots were removed. If you Google to see if bleach works on sheetrock, several articles explain that it is not, specifically because it doesn't work good on porous surfaces... I appreciate your videos, thanks for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge with us...

I have done the same thing you did and no mold growth has ever come back. Bleach kills surface mold but does not kill the mold spores. As you know, the type of mold you were working on is on the paper only and stops growing once the moister is gone. When the mold is lumpy, furry, and seems to be morphing into an animal, then I remove the drywall, spray everything with Concrobium then rebuild.

I was wondering if you could make a video on how someone would mange there business while still working part time? My situation doesn’t apply to most but I work on a boat as an engineer for 2 weeks at a time. I live on there for those 2 weeks and have the other 2 weeks off. Do you have any advice on how to keep customers with a schedule like that or similar to that until I can make the full time handyman transition?

Will the 1-2-3 really block water staining? It is still a water based primer, I would think you want an oil based primer (strangely, the 1-2-3 in a spray can is oil based, but not the gallons and quarts) to really block any water staining.

Handyman, do you buy a new mud tray and knifes every time you have to do drywall work? Also a good tip is when you need to spray some bleach on mold add some dawn dish soap just enough to give the water a light blue tint. This will hold the bleach on the mold longer and it will completely kill it.

In my brand new house we didn’t use the guest bathtub for the first year. When we did use it we found out the overflow was not connected. So the water just dumped onto the office ceiling. This ended up being a blessing because I got to fix 1 problem I knew about and one I didn’t. The main drain for the tub didn’t have a trap. So that got fixed. The other problem was the bathtub in the other bathroom. So I just cut the repair hole bigger to access that. A jacuzzi tub is shipped on a piece of plywood. That plywood should be screwed to the floor. Ours wasn’t done properly and the plywood was warped and lifted off the floor 1/2 inch in the middle. So when you filled the tub that got pressed down and you ended up with a 1/2 inch gap between the tub and the first row of tile. So I drilled 16 holes in the floor from underneath. Then filled that 1/2 inch gap with spray foam. It actually worked. The tub no longer dropped when filled with water.

Why? Go take a look at real research on 'toxic mold' - there's zero hard, scientific evidence it causes any issue with humans. That's assuming it's even the very rare S. chartarum mold, which most of the time it's just some random, harmless stain. Even if it was harmful, mold is like asbestos; only when it's disturbed and the spores get airborne is there any possibility of issue.

For a gas furnace the basics are improving efficiency and making sure carbon monoxide doesn’t leak out. Efficiency- - Replace your furnace filter and verify that the slot for the filter is not allowing air to get around it. - clean floor vents - look at all circuit boards and look for arcing black marks. If you see any your electricity from your power company has to many high voltage spikes. Contact an hvac contractor if you found any marks. - adjust burner and test efficiency (this should be done by a professional) - look at the tubes the flame goes through and check for carbon buildup. Clean with wire brush and a vacuum. Carbon Monoxide- - verify the flue pipe is drafting correctly. You don’t want any gasses getting out of the flue pipe. A smoke generator can help verify this. - open the area where the burner is. The burner has a heat exchanger right above it. Make sure that is not cracked. If cracked Co can get into the house. - verify any other covers are not cracked. - inspection flue pipe for corrosion and holes.

What the heck? No filter? Filters are usually used for a reason and this is a good example.

You should have seen the old filters that were laying around on the floor.

Oh, Handyman - that clogged furnace fan... 😦? Unbelievable. Was the motor giving off an electrical burn-out smell? It is amazing that a small fire didn't start. Love animals, having a great pet, but after this a "Limited Pets" clause is not an unreasonable request. Either this or a mandatory 6 month property inspection to catch problems before serious damage occurs. This may slow potential renter traffic a little bit but most reasonable renters should understand & appreciate why such clauses exist.

I always love the California references! Too many laws and warning labels on products.

bleach on mold isnt that much better than just wiping it off, all it does it bleach it not kill it. You should spray it with white vinegar, let it sit for a little bit then clean it off. If its outdoors mold go for bleach though much harder to address the cause outside.

bleach on mold works... on hard surfaces. It's just that bleach doesn't penetrate porous surfaces as well. Mold is very delicate and dies easily when the Ph changes... so any basic or acidic compounds will kill it.

The roof was patched 2 years ago. I do need to check it and do a more complete repair. This is the first time I could get in here to do the ceiling repair because it was rented out.
