The BYU hate comes from preseason expectations and conference bias. The story goes that the Big 12 is not very good so all the teams in there can’t be very good. It’s why you get the “VaNdY wOuLd WiN yOuR cOnFeReNcE!!!?!!&!!” malarkey. And since they were expected to be a bad team in a bad conference, every big win is luck and every close win is evidence that they aren’t good. Other teams in other conferences aren’t held to that standard, instead somehow proving their conference is amazing because even the bottom teams can challenge the top. Plus… nobody watches their games. They just look at box scores and highlight packages and let their confirmation bias do the rest.

I’m struggling to understand how the committee has Tulane at #25 and Army only one spot ahead at #24. Tulane has 2 losses and Army has none. They both recently played North Texas. North Texas put up 37 points on Tulane, while Army held them to 3. So, ASU should definitely be ahead of Tulane and Army should be ahead of those 3 loss SEC teams.

Penn State has handled all of their opponents handedly this season outside of Bowling Green. USC was a bad first half but they won on the road, down 20-6 at the half. They just smacked Washington and they beat #19 Illinois at the time. Furthermore, their only loss was by a literal yard to the #2 ranked team in the country. Saying they looked awful against OSU just isn’t true they played them evenly throughout the entire game but fell short. I agree the resume may be weak but there is no doubt that they are a top 12 team this season.

Penn State actually has #30 SOS per fpi, which is pretty decent among the top teams. If people want to complain about Penn State's ranking they should also look at Texas'. Teams aren't just ranked by their record and strength of schedule. How you win games matters too. BYU has multiple close victories against bad teams, while Texas has dominated almost every team they've played. That's why BYU's ranked 27th in FPI while all the other highly ranked teams have an FPI closer to their actual ranking. I'm not saying that Texas is some juggernaut, nor am I a Texas fan, but that's why they deserve to be ranked ahead of BYU. If BYU wants to be respected as a top 3 team, then they need to start showing they are significantly better than the teams they face, not barely squeak out wins against sub-500 teams.

Every team plays a C-minus game. For BYU, it was Okie State. For Texas, it was Vanderbilt. As for BYU against Utah, that was a throw-out-the-records rivalry game against a defense so good it is still top eight despite being put in horrible positions by their offense. Nobody seemed worried last year when Bama needed a 4th and 31 against a bad Auburn team. Why? Rivalry game. They’re just different. If BYU lets Kansas or ASU hang around, it would give me cause to worry. Otherwise, they are looking just as good as any other team from 3 to 10.

Do you know who played a real schedule this year? Mississippi State. Kentucky. The SEC made sure every competitive team got those teams on their schedule so they could have cupcakes from in conference as well. The truth is all four conferences are so bloated that nobody plays a tough schedule anymore. Everybody is limited to only two or three tough games. Georgia is the outlier this year. Just because a team loses to Vanderbilt does not suddenly mean Vanderbilt is good.

@@dilly70533 Exactly. The SEC made sure Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, Tennessee, and Ole Miss all got to pad their records. When you think “SEC schedule,” this is what comes to mind. They just don’t give it to the SEC powerhouses.

The difference back was it didn’t get proved on the field. It was voted on. This year will be different. That BYU team was not even the best team of that era. They were just the one that didn’t get tripped up. The Steve Young team the year before or the Ty Detmer teams afterwards were both better. But I really wish BYU had one last chance that year to prove themselves against the quality team. They invited six different teams to play before Michigan accepted. Washington, Boston College, they all went to bigger bowls for more money rather than challenging the number one team in the country. I wish they could’ve had a better matchup, but it was all about money then, and it is all about money still.

Bros using NFL logic. Being undefeated should mean nothing. BYU would have 4 losses on UGA schedule. Why are we rewarding having a weaker schedule. There’s a reason why high schools use a “weighted GPA” for AP classes. Georgia signed up for 5 APs. BYU signed up for 0

Texas and michigan blew teams out. I dont even think texas belonged in but its clear that BYU is not on that level. Teams should have 2 options: schedule hard or win big

Georgia is the only team you can use that example for. In most other cases, even teams in supposedly stronger conferences are only playing two or three good teams a year. Beat two good teams early in the year and they have one more chance later against Arizona State.but Tennessee only has one good win. Penn State and Texas have none. Why are you trying to penalize BYU for winning against two quality opponents and rewarding other teams that have played zero?
