I have a book from 1967 called _The Making of a Rookie_ that covers the rookie seasons of several greats from that era, one of whom is Paul Warfield. He mentions being taught to stay on his feet to catch passes unless he has no choice but to jump for the ball. If you watch Warfield's highlights you can see that he almost never jumps for catches. Warfield is a hall-of-famer, so there's probably something to that "don't jump" business.

Oh, so it's received wisdom? Just cause people have been doing it for a long time it doesn't mean it's right. If you could make diving catches consistentently you would be very very difficult to defend. Maybe he cares more about developing his skills for a future nfl career than listening to the advice of some dinosaur who is getting paid way more than him and who learned his football in a time when the players were much slower but played way more physically. Back in the day you'd get your head taken off if you were jumping around at every ball you saw, but the game done changed; the rules have been changed to give WRs way more protection so maybe this is a traditional belief that's ready to die
@MitchellPierson4 күн бұрын
L take. Like you got a point, but this ain't the case. If your feet ain't on the ground, you ARE slowing down. Jumping is available great skill for a wr, but you are no longer in control of your body or landing. DBS will move you out of bounds, it's clearly unnecessary in these plays, AND when it is necessary, it's poorly executed. Game time ain't the time for practicing new stuff. Jumping to catch is something to fix in little league and high school. It's a common problem, and yes it is a problem. @@tenaciousdarcy

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but a lot of fans are idiots! Jumping or diving is absolutely faster, but only you can't wind up too much and it only gains speed for a fraction of a second. For those wondering if this is an actual thing, it is in football and I’ve seen it in baseball too. Basically it’s a lack of discipline thing. Also idk if yall have ever played as WR but jumping stabilizes your vision. It makes it easier to see the ball while still having some forwards momentum. Also because you're in the air the momentum of the ball is dampened so it's less likely to bounce off you. There are legit reasons to jump for the ball even while open. That being said: If you arent catching the ball and you're mis timing your jumps all you're doing is presenting a difficult target for your QB because if he expects you to jump he's gonna throw it a little high every time. Especially if you're a deep ball kinda WR they will just pitch that shiii out as long and high as possible so jumping every reception is logical. However it makes you a 1 trick pony and you look stupid dropping the short ball. If you cant make those short receptions 10/10 times you're a scrub. If it's because your technique is messing up the QB targeting, that's 100% on you. How should he know where to throw? If you hit a pass to the chest and they jump it's gonna be low af. If you go head level and they DONT jump it's high but why jump on some short ball? QB clearly knows he jumps so he gives it to him high but he cant make the play. It's extremely poor fundamentals. Source: Elementary school football wideout. This stuff is basic basic. Presenting a good consistent target for the QB is everything.

I was able to go to 49ers training camps in the early 80s (about 20-30 fans hanging out about 20 feet off the practice field, we could see and hear everything) and heard Bill Walsh rant at receivers all the time about "don't jump to catch!". One in particular was him going up to a WR after a rep and asking him how he was supposed to run the route and when he got to where he was supposed to catch the ball Walsh said something like "it's all about quick and fast, it's timing, you make the cut, you catch the ball AS YOU PLANT AND CUT UPFIELD ... How can you plant a foot that is in the air? Don't jump to catch the ball. It makes you slower and it makes you easier to tackle and it makes me mad." Walsh was quick to cut players who couldn't learn.

@Scoots1994Ай бұрын
@MichaelSmith-kr9qw I think it was 3 different locations before I stopped going after Siefert left. 1978 was the first camp I went to. My favorite Rice tidbit was Joe telling him that he would throw to the number on Jerry's chest where there was an opening to turn and run up field. So if Jerry saw an opening over Jerry's left shoulder, Joe would hit the zero on Jerry's chest. If the opening was over Jerry's right shoulder, he would hit the eight. That's how accurate Joe was as a thrower and Jerry was as a router and the level of communication they had.

I don't think it's a jumping issue. More of a timing issue. Plenty of WR jump and make amazing catches. But they do it on time.

2:36 there are 2 passes in a row, thrown right at his helmet, where he jumps to make the catch. Anybody that played receiver at a young age knows this jump, it's the "my arms can't go above my head because my shoulder pads and helmet are in the way" jump to try to get the ball toward the chest to make the catch easier. The best way to fix this jump is tp get a smaller, thinner helmet with less padding and paper thin shoulder pads to give your arms full range of motion. Combine that with the modern allowing the ball to hit you in the chest technique of catching, this jump makes perfect sense. Qb needs to pass to him in the numbers. Qbs fault.

Seems like he'd be jumping less if the ball was more reachable...

Some of these are a bit unfair. You can't compare 3:43 to 2:45, for example. The 3:43 ball is at his stomach w/o him jumping. The 2:45 ball he jumps and still catches the ball above his head. A truly bad jump is when the ball is coming at your face and you jump and catch it at your chest (which you do see receivers do sometimes, even in the NFL).

Nahh bad timing is bad timing lol

@@bigfellamike1913 The one at 2:45 isn't bad timing. It looks like he catches it at near the top of his jump. And, again, if he hadn't jumped ... that pass is incomplete. He's running a stop route-he's not supposed to get horizontal. It's not a speed out. He jumps, and the ball is STILL above his head when he catches it (and his feet are in the air).

Seems like he has a huge depth perception issue he can tell how far the ball is away.

OBSERVATION my DB coach used to tell us, when you think of jumping to block or interrupt or intercept a pass, jump right after you feel like jumping. You will succeed everytime.

Great video. First video that I've seen where someone actually get to the point of why Kelly got mad. He's not looking Kelly in the eye. Look him in the eye and talk to him like a man. I don't think Kelly was in the wrong.
